Coding for kids at 4, 5 and 6 is not about typing code. It is about giving clear instructions, one step at a time, and fixing them when they do not work. That is exactly what a programmer does. On this page your child helps Golu, our friendly glass marble, roll across a small grass grid to a mango. Your child taps arrow buttons to build a plan, presses Go, and watches Golu follow it step by step. If the plan is not quite right, Golu rolls back to the start and says "Let us try again". Every instruction is spoken in Hindi and English, so no reading is needed.
What is coding for kids?
A computer does exactly what it is told, in the exact order, and nothing else. Coding is writing those steps down. For a young child, the big ideas are simple and very real:
- Sequence: steps happen in order. First socks, then shoes.
- Directions: forward, back, left, right, up and down.
- Debugging: when something goes wrong, find the step that is wrong and change it. No shame, just fix it.
- Loops: when a step repeats, say "do it 3 times" instead of saying it three times.
These ideas are called computational thinking. They sit alongside early maths, story sequencing and following instructions, and they are part of many new school curricula, including the coding and computational thinking strand introduced for Indian schools from the early classes.
How to play the arrow coding game
Golu sits on a 4 by 4 grass grid. A mango waits in another square, and sometimes rocks block the way.
Arrows mode (ages 4-6)
- Tap the arrow buttons: → right, ← left, ↑ up, ↓ down. Each tap adds an arrow block to the program row, so your child can see the whole plan.
- Made a mistake? Tap ⌫ to remove the last arrow.
- Press Go. Golu moves one square for each arrow, in order, and each step is spoken.
- If Golu reaches the mango, the program worked. If he stops short, or his next step would bump a rock or the edge of the grid, he gently rolls back to the start: "Let us try again."
Help comes in small steps, never as a "wrong". After 2 tries, the game clears the program and makes the next correct arrow button glow. After 3 tries, Golu's finger points to it. Younger age settings start with easy grids where the mango is only a few squares away in a straight line.
Repeat mode (ages 5-6)
This mode adds a 🔁3 button. Tap it before an arrow and that arrow repeats 3 times. So "→ → → ↓ ↓ ↓" becomes just "🔁3 → , 🔁3 ↓". That is a loop, the same idea that powers every real program, and your child discovers that it makes a plan shorter and easier to check.
Every game ends with a marble in the Goli Jar; tap it and count the marbles together. The अ+A button sets Hindi first, English first, or one language only. Grown-up settings let you set your child's age and turn on calm motion, calm sound, captions and high contrast.

Left and right are genuinely hard for young children, and many are not sure of them until 6 or 7. On this grid, arrows point the way on the screen, so your child can follow the picture of the arrow instead of the word "left".
Unplugged coding activities: coding without a computer
At 4 to 6, most real coding learning happens away from the screen, with bodies, floors and paper. Use the game to show the idea, then play these at home:
The robot grown-up game
You are the robot; your child is the programmer. You can only move when given a step: "one step forward", "turn", "one step forward". Follow the steps exactly, even if they walk you into the sofa (gently and with a big funny "beep!"). Children love finding the bug in your path. This is the mission on the end card: give a grown-up arrow steps to walk to the kitchen. Then swap: your child is the robot.
A floor grid with tape
Use masking tape or chalk to make a 4 by 4 grid on the floor, with squares big enough to stand in. Put a toy mango (or a real fruit) in one square and a cushion as a rock. Your child walks the path, or pushes a toy car along it, while you read out the arrows. Floor tiles in many Indian homes already make a perfect grid.
Arrow cards
Draw 10 to 15 arrows on small cards (→ ← ↑ ↓) and add a few "×3" cards. Your child lays out the cards in a row to plan a path across the floor grid, then checks it by walking. When it goes wrong, they swap one card. That is debugging with paper.
Everyday sequences
Any routine is a program: brushing teeth, making lemonade, getting ready for school. Ask "What comes first? What comes next?" and try doing a routine in the wrong order for a laugh (shoes before socks!). The story sequencing for kids page practises the same first, next, last thinking with pictures.
How to explain coding to a child in 5 minutes a day
- Say it simply: "Coding means telling a robot exactly what to do, one step at a time."
- Count the squares first: before tapping, count together how many squares Golu must move. Counting practice from before and after numbers helps here.
- Touch the path: let your child trace the path on the screen with a finger, then tap the arrows.
- Celebrate bugs: when Golu goes back, say "We found a bug! Which step should we change?" Treat mistakes as clues.
- Stop while it is fun: two or three grids a day is plenty.

Keep it calm: tips for every child
Praise the thinking: "You counted the squares before you pressed Go!" Coding naturally involves getting things wrong, so model a relaxed "Oops, let us fix it" yourself. If your child gets upset, switch to the robot game, where mistakes are funny instead of frustrating. For children with autism, the clear rules, predictable moves and visible program row often feel satisfying; calm motion slows things down. For children with speech delay, pointing at arrows works just as well as saying them. For children with attention differences, keep to one grid at a time and move their body between rounds. In bilingual homes, directions in both languages (ऊपर, नीचे, दाएँ, बाएँ) help children link home talk with school talk.
Keep screen sessions short (5 to 10 minutes) and play together. Children under 2 do not need coding games at all; talk, songs and real objects are what they need. Even at 4 to 6, spend more time on unplugged play than on screen play.
