Addition for kids with pictures

Two groups of pictures sit side by side. Listen to "three and two, how many altogether?", count them all and tap the answer.

How many altogether?कुल कितने हुए?

For grown-ups बड़ों के लिए

Addition for kids starts with something every child already does: putting things together. On this page your child sees two small groups of the same picture, for example three mangoes and two mangoes, hears "three and two, how many altogether?", counts them all and taps the total. Nothing more is needed: no symbols to memorise, no timer, and no red crosses.

When should children start addition?

Addition comes after counting. A child is ready when they can count objects to 10 reliably and tell you "how many" at the end. For most children that is around age 5, so this page is aimed at ages 5 to 6, with an easier version for 4-year-olds.

AgeWhat fitsIn the game
2-3 yearsNot yet. Count 1, 2, 3 things togetherTry the counting game instead
3-4 years"One more" in play: "You have 2 grapes, here's one more"Small groups, with a grown-up counting along
4-5 yearsJoining two groups up to about 6 by counting allEach group has 1 to 3 pictures
5-6 yearsAddition within 10; number bonds to 5 with objectsEach group has 1 to 5 pictures, totals up to 10

The UK Reception year expects number bonds to 5 (like 2 + 3 and 4 + 1), and India's NIPUN Balvatika goals for 5-6 year olds focus on counting, comparing and ordering to 10. Written sums with + and = signs are usually taught in class 1. So for a 5 year old, addition with pictures is exactly right.

What is addition? A simple way to explain it

How do you explain addition to a child? Say: "Adding means putting things together and finding out how many there are altogether." Then show it. Put 2 cars in one hand and 1 car in the other, bring your hands together and count: "1, 2, 3. Two and one make three."

Some examples to act out:

  • 2 ladoos and 2 ladoos make 4 ladoos.
  • 3 birds on a wire and 1 more bird lands: now there are 4 birds.
  • 5 fingers and 5 fingers make 10 fingers.

In Hindi, adding is जोड़ (jod) and "how many altogether?" is कुल कितने हुए?, which is what the game asks when Hindi is on.

How to play the addition game

  1. Two groups of pictures appear with a + sign and a question mark. The pictures are fruits, animals, birds or vehicles.
  2. The question is spoken: "four and three, how many altogether?" Press 🔊 to hear it again.
  3. Your child counts all the pictures, pointing if they like, and taps a number card. Each card shows the numeral, dots and the number word.
  4. The right card fills in the answer and is said in English and Hindi. A different number is simply named, with a gentle "count again". The game never says "wrong".
  5. After a few sums a marble goes into the Goli Jar. Tap the jar and count the marbles together, then ask "If you win one more, how many will you have?"

Set the age in Settings (behind the grown-up check). At 5-6 the groups are bigger; at younger ages the sums stay small. The अ+A button switches between Hindi and English.

How to teach addition at home in 5 minutes a day

Parents often ask how to teach basic math to a child without worksheets and tears. Real objects do most of the work:

  • Snack sums. "You have 3 grapes. I'll give you 2 more. How many now?" Eat them afterwards.
  • Finger adding. Show 3 fingers on one hand and 2 on the other, then count them all.
  • Two-bowl game. Drop buttons into two bowls, then tip them into one and count.
  • Market maths. "We need 2 onions and 3 tomatoes. How many vegetables is that?"
  • Dice sums. Roll two dice and count all the dots. Board games like ludo and snakes and ladders build this naturally.
  • Counting on. Once counting all is easy, show a shortcut: start at the bigger number and count on. "Five… six, seven." This usually comes at 5-6.

The three stages of early addition

Children move through these at their own pace: first count all (count every object from 1), then count on (start from one group's number), and finally just know small facts like 2 + 2 = 4. Do not rush to the last stage. A child who counts every mango is doing real maths.

What about subtraction?

This game practises addition only. Subtraction for kids is the same idea in reverse, "taking away", and it is easiest to teach with real objects and pictures first. Try these simple subtraction activities:

  • Five little monkeys. Sing it with five fingers and fold one down each verse.
  • Eat and count. "You had 5 peanuts. You ate 2. How many are left?"
  • Bowling. Set up 6 bottles, knock some down and count the ones standing.

How to teach subtraction for UKG kids? Keep it within 5 and always with objects. Written subtraction with a minus sign is usually a class 1 topic.

Worksheets and printable ideas

There is no PDF here, but a single-digit addition worksheet is easy to make. Draw two groups of dots or stars with a box for the answer, and keep totals within 10. For class 1 and grade 1, add written sums like 4 + 3 = __ under the pictures. A simple addition chart on the fridge (1 + 1 up to 5 + 5) helps too. Children who are ready for bigger numbers, such as addition up to 20, can use the 1 to 100 number chart to count on.

Maths for kids, age by age

  • Maths for kids age 4: counting to 10, "one more", comparing big and small, and simple patterns. Addition for kids age 4 is mostly spoken and played, never written.
  • Maths for kids age 5: joining groups within 10, number bonds to 5, and before and after numbers. This game fits here best.
  • Maths for kids age 6: addition and subtraction for UKG kids and class 1, first with pictures, then written sums within 10 and 20.
  • Maths for kids class 1: addition for kids in class 1 and 1st grade moves to sums up to 20 and simple subtraction questions with answers you can check by counting.
  • Maths for kids age 7 and 8: two-digit sums, subtraction with borrowing and early times tables. That is beyond this site, which is for ages 2 to 6.

What is addition and subtraction for kids at this stage? Two sides of one idea: putting together and taking away. Learn addition and subtraction for kids with objects first, then pictures, and only then numbers on paper. A simple addition and subtraction chart for kids, with dots next to each sum, helps bridge the gap.

Many families look for free addition games for kids online, or an addition song or video. Songs are fine for the words, but an addition subtraction activity with real objects, or a short game where your child answers, teaches more. Easy subtraction for kids works the same way: first with fingers, then with pictures in a subtraction for kindergarten worksheet.

Printable maths for kids worksheets can come from your own hand: fold a paper into four, draw a sum with pictures in each box, and your addition for kids worksheets are ready for the week.

Keep it calm and kind

Maths anxiety can start early, often from pressure. Keep sessions short, stop while your child is still smiling, and praise the method: "You counted every one carefully!" If a sum is too hard, make it smaller or use real objects.

For a child with a speech delay, pointing to the answer card is enough. Autistic children may prefer calm sound and fewer choices, both in Settings. In bilingual homes, maths words in the home language are a strong start. If you are worried about your child's development, talk to your paediatrician.

Screen time: sit together, play a few sums, then do some with real objects. Under-2s are better off with a grown-up and real toys than a screen.

More maths for kids on this site: before and after numbers ("one more" is the number after), patterns, and tables 2 to 10 as a stretch. For more home ideas, see the Parent Corner.

Addition for Kids: questions parents ask

What is addition for kids, with examples?
Addition means putting groups together and finding how many altogether. For example, 2 apples and 3 apples make 5 apples, and 4 + 1 = 5.
At what age should a child learn addition?
Most children are ready for simple addition with objects at about 5, once they can count to 10 confidently. Written sums with + and = usually come in class 1.
How can I teach my child math at home?
Use everyday moments: count rotis, share snacks, play dice and board games, and ask "how many altogether?" Five minutes of play a day works better than long worksheets.
How do I teach addition to a beginner?
Start with real objects and "count all": put two groups together and count every one. Then show "counting on" from the bigger number. Keep totals within 5, then within 10.
Does this page teach subtraction for kids too?
The game practises addition only. For subtraction, use real objects and "take away" games like eating snacks or knocking down bottles, as described above.
Are the sums hard?
No. For ages 4-5 each group has 1 to 3 pictures, and for ages 5-6 each group has 1 to 5, so answers stay within 10. Set the age in Settings.
Is this addition game free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, no ads and no app download, and it works in any browser. Progress (marbles) is saved on your device.
