क से कबूतर, ख से खरगोश, ग से गमला, घ से घड़ी: once your child knows the swar, the vyanjan are the next big step. On this k se kabutar page your child taps all 37 Hindi vyanjan, hears each consonant with its picture word in clear audio, and plays Find it and Memory. Hindi vyanjan for kids are learned slowly, over months, so this page is built for short, repeated visits.
What is a Hindi vyanjan?
A vyanjan (व्यंजन) is a consonant. Unlike a swar, it cannot be said alone: every vyanjan carries a hidden अ. When the audio says क, you hear "ka", which is really "k" + "a". That is why Hindi letters are read as ka, kha, ga, gha and not as k, kh, g, gh. What is Hindi swar and vyanjan, in one line? Swar are the vowels you can say on their own; vyanjan are the consonants that lean on a vowel.
Ka kha ga gha chart: Hindi vyanjan with pictures and words
The Hindi vyanjan mala is arranged in neat rows of five, called varg, by where the sound is made in the mouth. This is the k se kabutar chart with the exact picture words the game uses. The word list above has the same words with 🔊 buttons for pronunciation.
| Row | Letters with picture words | Made with |
|---|---|---|
| क varg | क से कबूतर (pigeon), ख से खरगोश (rabbit), ग से गमला (flower pot), घ से घड़ी (clock), ङ | Back of the throat |
| च varg | च से चम्मच (spoon), छ से छतरी (umbrella), ज से जहाज़ (ship), झ से झंडा (flag), ञ | Tongue on the palate |
| ट varg | ट से टमाटर (tomato), ठ से ठेला (handcart), ड से डमरू (damru drum), ढ से ढोलक (dholak), ण on its own (heard in बाण) | Tongue curled back |
| त varg | त से तरबूज़ (watermelon), थ से थरमस (flask), द से दरवाज़ा (door), ध से धनुष (bow), न से नाव (boat) | Tongue on the teeth |
No common word starts with ङ or ञ, so the game shows those letters on their own. Children say "ka kha ga gha anga" (ङ sounds like "nga") when they chant the row. ङ is heard inside words like अङ्ग, and ञ in पञ्च.
How many Hindi vyanjan are there?
There are 33 main vyanjan, from क to ह. Primers then add the joined letters क्ष त्र ज्ञ, which is why the chant goes "क से कबूतर ज्ञ तक", and most school charts today add श्र too. This page shows 37 cards. Some books also add the dotted letters ड़ ढ़ (as in सड़क, पढ़ना). How many letters are in the k se kabutar word itself? कबूतर has four akshar: क, बू, त, र.
What are क्ष त्र ज्ञ? (sanyukt vyanjan)
These three are joined consonants, each made of two letters:
| Letter | Made of | Said as | Word in the game |
|---|---|---|---|
| क्ष | क् + ष | ksha | क्षितिज |
| त्र | त् + र | tra | त्रिशूल |
| ज्ञ | ज् + ञ | gya (in everyday Hindi) | ज्ञानी |
How to teach sanyukt vyanjan in Hindi? At 3-6, just treat them as three more letters with their own shapes and words. Explaining "half letters" can wait until class 1 or 2.
Tricky sounds for English speakers
Hindi vyanjan in English spelling can confuse, because English has no separate letters for many of them. Two ideas make it easy:
- Breathy pairs: each row has a plain and a breathy letter: क/ख, ग/घ, च/छ, प/फ. Hold a paper strip in front of your mouth: it moves for ख but hardly for क.
- Two kinds of t and d: ट ड are said with the tongue curled back (like English "t" and "d"); त द with the tongue on the teeth. Children in Hindi homes hear this naturally; children abroad need to hear it many times, which is what Listen mode is for.
If your child is also learning English letter sounds, the phonics sounds page is a good partner: स and "s", म and "m" match closely.
How to use this Hindi vyanjan game
- Listen (सुनो): tap any card to hear "क से कबूतर" and "ka, pigeon".
- Find it (ढूँढो): Golu asks "ग कहाँ है?". A wrong tap gets a gentle hint and a glow on the answer, never "wrong".
- Memory (जोड़ी): turn over cards to find matching pairs of letters.
Each finished game drops a marble in the Goli Jar. Use the अ+A button for Hindi only or both languages, and set your child's age in Settings so a 3 year old sees two choices and a 6 year old sees four. These Hindi vyanjan games run in any browser on phone, tablet or PC.
How to teach Hindi vyanjan to kids: an easy way
The easy way to learn Hindi vyanjan is not in क ख ग order. Indian early-years guidance suggests starting with a few common letters that make many simple words:
| Stage | Age | Letters | Words your child can soon read |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3-4 (nursery) | म क ल न ज र | जल, नल |
| 2 | 4-5 (LKG) | घ ब स फ त प ट ग ह च द व | घर, बस, फल, कमल, मटर |
| 3 | 5-6 (UKG) | The rest, with ङ ञ ण ष for recognition only | नमक, कलम, सड़क |
Once your child knows about a dozen vyanjan, the next page is two letter Hindi words, where reading begins.
A Hindi vyanjan activity for each day
- Letter walk: in the park, spot a कबूतर and say "क से कबूतर!".
- Kitchen: hold a चम्मच, a टमाटर, a सेब. Ask "which letter?"
- Festival time: a पतंग at Makar Sankranti, a ढोलक at a wedding, a झंडा on Republic Day: each is a letter lesson.
- Clay letters: roll dough into snakes and shape one letter a day.
- Finish with the game: three rounds of Find it, one marble.
How to write Hindi vyanjan (hindi vyanjan kaise likhe)
Most vyanjan have a standing line on the right and the top line (शिरोरेखा) drawn last. क: a standing line, then two curves on either side. ग: a curve and a standing line. Some letters, like थ ध भ, have a small gap in the top line. Hindi vyanjan formation on paper usually starts at 5-6; before that, tracing with a finger in sand or flour is plenty. This site has no PDF worksheet, but you can print the word list above and make your own k se kabutar worksheet by writing dotted letters beside each picture.
K se kabutar drawing and worksheet ideas
A drawing turns a letter into a memory. For an easy k se kabutar drawing for kids, draw a big oval body, a small circle head, a triangle beak and a fan tail, then write क large beside it. Your child colours the pigeon grey and traces the letter. Do the same for ख से खरगोश (two long ears) and म से मछली (a leaf shape with a triangle tail).
Teachers looking for a Hindi vyanjan worksheet for UKG can build one from the chart above: a row of pictures, a row of dotted letters, and a line to match each picture to its Hindi vyanjan akshar. This gives you a Hindi vyanjan with pictures worksheet without any download. A क से कबूतर वर्कशीट made by hand also lets you choose only the letters your child is learning this week.
K se kabutar in English, and "a for apple"
K se kabutar is the Hindi version of "a for apple": a letter, then a word that starts with it. In English spelling the first row reads "ka for kabutar (pigeon), kha for khargosh (rabbit), ga for gamla (flower pot), gha for ghadi (clock)". Families abroad can use this line to learn ka kha ga gha in English letters first, then match the sounds to the Devanagari shapes in the game. Each Hindi vyanjan varn has one fixed sound, so the English spelling is only a helper, not a rule.
Many children also know a k se kabutar song or rhyme from school, and there are k se kabutar video songs online. This page has no video; instead, the Listen mode says each line of the k se kabutar kha se khargosh chant clearly, and you can sing it together in your own tune.
Be kind and patient
- 37 letters is a lot. Learning five new ones a month is good progress.
- Praise effort: "You remembered the rabbit letter!"
- If your child mixes up ब and व, or ध and घ, that is normal; they look alike.
- For speech delay, let your child point; for autism, keep the same order and turn on calm sound. Talk to your paediatrician if you are worried.
- Sit together, keep sessions to 5-10 minutes, and give under-2s real objects and songs instead of a screen.
Once the vyanjan feel familiar, the Hindi barakhadi shows how each one changes with a matra, and the animals name page gives more words for ख से खरगोश-style practice.
