Big and small for kids is one of the very first maths ideas, and this page turns it into a two-picture game. Golu shows the same apple, elephant or bus twice, one big and one small, and asks "Which one is big?" or "Which one is small?". Your child taps, and hears the answer in Hindi and English: big is बड़ा (bada) and small is छोटा (chhota). What is big and small for kids?
The concept of big and small for kids is simple to say and harder to grasp than it looks. "Big" is not a thing; it is a comparison. A cat is big next to a mouse and small next to an elephant. Young children first learn big and small with two very different sizes side by side, which is exactly what this game shows: the small picture is half the size of the big one. Later they learn that the same thing can be both, depending on what you compare it with.
A good big and small definition for kids: big takes up more space, small takes up less. In Hindi, बड़ा and छोटा are used for size and also for age (बड़ा भाई, elder brother), which is worth pointing out to a 5 year old.
What your child learns, age by age
India's NCF for the Foundational Stage expects children to order objects by size at 2-3 levels by age 3-4 ("big, small, smaller"), and to arrange up to 5 objects by size or length around age 5-6. Size comparison for toddlers starts much earlier, though, with "big ball, small ball" at bath time.

How to use this big and small game
Each question shows two pictures of the same thing, one big and one small, and Golu asks for one of them out loud. There are always two choices, which keeps it calm for 2 and 3 year olds. The number of questions in a round depends on the age you choose in Settings (behind a grown-up check): 4 for age 2-3, up to 8 for age 5-6.
The game never says "wrong". If your child taps the other picture, it names what they tapped and invites another try. A second miss makes the right answer glow, and a third brings Golu to point at it. At the end of each round a marble drops into the Goli Jar. Tap the jar to count your child's marbles together.
Use the अ+A button to choose Hindi then English, English then Hindi, Hindi only or English only. Hearing बड़ा and "big" together helps children in Hindi-speaking homes pick up the English size words for school.
Settings also offer calm motion, calm sound, captions and high contrast, which help children who are sensitive to busy screens.
How to teach big and small for kids at home
How to explain big and small? Show it with your hands and your voice. Say "BIG" in a deep, wide voice with arms stretched out, and "small" in a tiny squeak with two fingers pinched. Children remember the feeling long before the word. Then try these big and small activities, 5-10 minutes a day.
- Kitchen pairs. A big bowl and a small katori, a big spoon and a small spoon, a big onion and a small one. Ask "Give me the small one."
- Shoe line-up. Put Papa's shoe next to your child's. Whose is big? Then add a baby sock for "smallest".
- Market sort. At the vegetable stall, compare a big pumpkin (कद्दू) with a small lemon. Let your child hold both.
- Park size walk. Big tree, small plant; big dog, small puppy; big stone, small pebble.
- Nesting cups or steel dabbas. Stacking a set of tiffin boxes from biggest to smallest is a perfect big and small activity for nursery kids.
How to teach toddlers big and small
For a 2 year old, use only two things with a huge difference, like a football and a marble. Use one word per session: this week "big", next week "small". Toddlers usually learn "big" first because it is more exciting. Size comparison games work best when your child can touch the objects, so keep the screen game as a short extra after real play.
How to teach big and small to preschoolers
Preschoolers are ready for three sizes. Make a "Papa bear, Mummy bear, Baby bear" line with bowls or pillows, and let your child tell the story. Add bigger and smaller for kids: "Is this one bigger or smaller than that one?" Then move to tall and short (two water bottles) and long and short (two ropes). Notice that Hindi uses लंबा for both tall and long. Many children from Hindi-speaking homes say "long" for a tall person. Gently model "tall" when talking about people and trees.
Big and small animals and fun size facts
Animal size comparison for kids is always a hit. The blue whale is the biggest animal ever known, bigger than any dinosaur, and a whale size comparison with a school bus (a blue whale is about as long as three buses) makes eyes go wide. Among land animals, the elephant is the biggest; India's Asian elephants live in Kerala, Karnataka, Assam and more. Some of the smallest are ants, hummingbirds and the bumblebee bat. There is no PDF on this site, but you can make your own big and small worksheet for kids in two minutes. Draw two circles, one big and one small, and ask your child to colour the big one red. For big and small drawing for kids, ask them to draw a big sun and a small sun, or a big fish and a small fish. The drawing does not need to be neat; what matters is that one is clearly bigger. Gentle tips for every child
- Praise the thinking: "You looked at both and chose. Well done."
- If your child always taps the big one, that is common. Play a "small week" at home: small spoon, small car, small shoe.
- If your child gets frustrated, put the phone away and play with real bowls. The game will still be here tomorrow.
- Speech delay: big and small can be shown with gestures. Accept a gesture as an answer and say the word for your child.
- Autism and sensory needs: turn on calm sound and calm motion, and keep sessions short and predictable.
On screen time: children under 2 learn size far better by handling real cups and balls with you. For 2 to 5 year olds, WHO and the Indian Academy of Paediatrics suggest up to an hour of screen time a day, with a grown-up alongside.
