These games for 5 year olds and 6 year olds are for children on the edge of school. A five-year-old can now sit with a puzzle for ten minutes, sound out a short word, add two small numbers and explain the rule behind a game. The cards above lead to ten educational games for 5 year olds that match the UKG year in India (Balvatika 3), Reception in the UK and Kindergarten in the US. Below: why each game fits, how to use it well, and plenty of indoor and outdoor games for 6 year olds and 5 year olds that need no screen.
Why these games suit 5 and 6 year olds
At five and six, children start to read and write in earnest. India's NIPUN Bharat targets for Balvatika (age 5-6) say a child should recognise letters and their sounds, read simple words of two or three letters, write their own first name, count objects and match them to numerals up to 10, and compare two groups using more than, less than and equal to. The NCF-FS adds counting out loud to 20, simple patterns, sorting by a rule and naming feelings with their causes ("I am angry because he broke my tower"). Five-year-olds also follow game rules, take turns, and pay attention for 5-10 minutes.
So good learning games for 5 year olds ask for real thinking, a little reading, and some stretch. With the age set to 5-6, our games show more choices and harder questions, but they still never say "wrong". A wrong tap brings a hint, and every round ends with a marble.
What each game teaches at 5-6
| Game | Skill for a 5 or 6 year old | Try this at home |
|---|---|---|
| Hindi barakhadi | Consonants with matras (क का कि की), the key to reading Hindi | Read का, मा, ना on shop signs and packets |
| Three letter words | Blending sounds to read CVC words: c-a-t, cat | "Robot talk": say p-i-g slowly and let your child blend it |
| Rhyming words | Hearing and making rhymes, a strong predictor of reading | Make silly rhymes at dinner: "dal, pal, Hal" |
| Addition for kids | Putting two groups together, within 10 | "3 spoons and 2 spoons: how many?" |
| Hindi ginti | Counting in Hindi and recognising Devanagari digits | Count chapatis in Hindi at dinner |
| Tables for kids | Hearing the rhythm of the 2 and 5 times tables (a stretch at this age) | Count shoes in twos, fingers in fives |
| Months of the year | Time and sequence; birthdays and festivals | Mark family birthdays on a calendar |
| Solar system for kids | Wonder, big words and categories | Look at the moon every night for a week |
| Safety rules | Road safety, hot and sharp things, telling a trusted grown-up | Practise stop, look, listen at a real crossing |
| Do akshar wale shabd | Reading two-letter Hindi words without matras (जल, घर) | Write घर on a card and stick it on the door |
How to play online, free and without downloading
These are free educational games for 5 year olds online, with no downloading. They open in any browser, so they work as educational tablet games for 5 year olds, on an iPad, on an Android phone or on a computer. There is no sign-up, there are no ads, and no personal data is collected. Once opened, a page keeps working on a weak connection.
- Set the age to 5-6 in Settings (behind a short grown-up check) for more choices and questions.
- Use the अ+A button to hear Hindi first, English first, or one language only. For school English, try English first; for Hindi reading, Hindi only.
- Let your child lead. Five-year-olds can choose their own game from the cards. Ask them to explain each answer.
- Count the marbles in the Goli Jar at the end, and try adding today's and yesterday's.
Screen time: IAP guidance for India says at most one hour a day until the fifth birthday, and under two hours a day for ages 5-10, including educational use. Keep our games to 15-20 minutes, play together when you can, and keep screens away from meals and the hour before bed.
Games for 5 year olds at home, indoor and outdoor
Five- and six-year-olds need at least an hour of huff-and-puff play every day. These games for 6 year olds at home and outdoors turn the skills above into real play.
Indoor games for 5 year olds
- Word treasure hunt. Hide picture cards around the room with a three-letter word on each. Your child reads the word, then finds the thing.
- Shop game. Price toys at ₹1-₹10 and pay with real coins. Five-year-olds can recognise Indian coins, and six-year-olds can start with notes.
- Rhyme ping-pong. You say "cat", they say "hat", you say "mat"… whoever cannot think of one starts a new word.
- Name games for 5 year olds. Write each family name; count the letters; find the name with the most.
- Board games. Ludo, snakes and ladders and simple card games teach counting on, turn-taking and losing gracefully. Good board games for 6 year olds add strategy, like a simple memory game with 10 pairs.
Outdoor games for 5 and 6 year olds
Hopscotch with numbers 1-10, पिट्ठू (seven stones), खो-खो in a small group, catch with a tennis ball, skipping and cycling are all excellent. On a walk, read number plates ("find a 7!") and shop signs. Counting games for 5 year olds work well outdoors: count cars, trees or birds on a branch.
Best educational toys for 5 year olds: a set of blocks or construction pieces, a magnifying glass, a simple balance, a set of number cards, a globe, crayons and scissors, and lots of picture books. None of them needs a battery.
Birthday party games for 5 and 6 year olds
At a 5 year old birthday party, keep the rules short: musical chairs, treasure hunt with picture-and-word clues, lemon-and-spoon race, statues, and "pass the parcel" with a riddle in each layer. At a 6 year old birthday party, children enjoy team games like tug of war, relay races and a simple quiz ("Which planet is closest to the sun?"). Give every child a small prize.
What should a 5 year old know before school?
A child starting Class 1 at six (as NEP 2020 recommends) or Kindergarten at five does not need to read fluently. Most schools hope your child can talk in full sentences, listen to a story and answer questions, recognise letters and many of their sounds, write their first name, count objects to 10, dress and use the toilet alone, and join in group play. Our guide to what a 5 year old should know lists the UKG syllabus, NIPUN targets and CDC milestones side by side.
Every child is different, and many perfectly healthy children read later than others. If your five-year-old cannot tell a simple story, does not take turns in games, cannot hop on one foot, or has lost skills they once had, talk to your paediatrician.
Adapting games for every child
If reading games frustrate your child, go back to rhyming and listening games for a few weeks; hearing sounds comes before reading them. Switch on "fewer choices" or set the age to 4-5 for a while. For a child with speech or language delay, keep turns short and celebrate every attempt. For an autistic child, use calm sound, high contrast and the same routine each day. In bilingual homes, reading in two scripts takes a little longer at first, and that is normal. Praise effort: "You sounded out every letter!"
