The Hindi varnamala (हिंदी वर्णमाला) is the alphabet your child will use to read and write Hindi for life. On this page your child taps each of the 50 Hindi letters for kids shown in the play zone, hears it in clear audio and sees a picture word, the way Indian primers teach: अ से अनार, क से कबूतर. There is nothing to install and no sign-up, so Hindi learning for kids can start in a spare five minutes on any phone.

What is swar and vyanjan? The two parts of the Hindi alphabet

Every Hindi letter is either a swar (स्वर, vowel) or a vyanjan (व्यंजन, consonant). A swar can be spoken on its own, with the breath flowing freely: अ, आ, इ. A vyanjan needs a vowel to be spoken. When you say you are really saying "k" plus the hidden sound, which is why it sounds like "ka". Explaining swar vyanjan in English this way helps parents who grew up with the English ABC.

The game uses the same order as school books. The swar come first, then the vyanjan in their family rows, then the four joined letters क्ष त्र ज्ञ श्र at the end.

How many swar and vyanjan are there? (swar vyanjan kitne hote hain)

This is the question parents ask most: स्वर और व्यंजन कितने होते हैं? Books count them slightly differently, so here is the count this page uses and why.

GroupLettersHow many
Swar (vowels)अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ऋ ए ऐ ओ औ11
Ayogvah (nasal and breath signs, taught with swar)अं अः2
Main vyanjan (consonants) to 33
Joined letters (sanyukt vyanjan)क्ष त्र ज्ञ श्र4
Total on this page50

Many school charts say "13 swar and 33 vyanjan" (counting अं अः as swar) and add क्ष त्र ज्ञ श्र, and some add ड़ ढ़. Grammar books say 11 swar, because अं and अः are strictly ayogvah. Both are right. For the Hindi alphabet count, just stay consistent with your child's school book.

Hindi alphabet chart with pictures and words

The word list above works as a Hindi alphabet chart with pictures: every letter, its picture word in Hindi and English, the pronunciation and a 🔊 button. It is a Hindi alphabet chart in English and Hindi at once, so a grandparent who reads Devanagari and a parent who reads only English can both use it. Want a printable chart for the fridge? Print this page from your browser. There is no separate PDF file; the word list prints cleanly on A4.

The vyanjan are grouped by where the sound is made in the mouth. This is what makes a Hindi consonants chart for kids so neat, and it helps older children remember the order:

Row (varg)LettersWhere the sound is madeExample word
क vargक ख ग घ ङBack of the throatकबूतर (pigeon)
च vargच छ ज झ ञMiddle of the tongue on the palateचम्मच (spoon)
ट vargट ठ ड ढ णTongue curled backटमाटर (tomato)
त vargत थ द ध नTongue touching the teethतरबूज़ (watermelon)
प vargप फ ब भ मLipsपतंग (kite)
Antahsthaय र ल वBetween vowel and consonantरेल (train)
Ushmश ष स हHissing or breathyशेर (lion)

Three letters, , and , have no common word that starts with them, so, as on school charts, the game shows the letter alone and says its sound. They appear inside words such as रङ्ग, पञ्जा and बाण.

How to use this Hindi alphabet game

  • Listen (सुनो): tap a letter card. Your child hears "अ से अनार" and "a, pomegranate". This is the calm, free exploring mode.
  • Find it (ढूँढो): Golu asks "क कहाँ है?" and shows two to four letters. A wrong tap never hears "wrong"; it gets a gentle hint, then a glow on the answer.
  • The अ+A button in the header sets the order: Hindi then English, English then Hindi, or one language only. For a Hindi-only home, choose Hindi only.
  • The Goli Jar: each finished game drops a marble into the jar. Tap the jar and count the marbles together, in Hindi if you like.
  • Settings (behind a grown-up check) set your child's age, which changes how many choices appear, and turn on calm motion, calm sound, captions or high contrast.

It is a learn Hindi alphabet game that works in any browser on a phone, tablet or PC, and once opened it keeps working on a weak connection. That makes it easy to learn Hindi alphabet online at home, in the car or at a grandparent's house.

How to learn the Hindi alphabet easily, stage by stage

Children do not need all 50 letters at once. Indian curricula (NCF for the Foundational Stage and NIPUN Bharat) follow a clear path: speak and sing first, then recognise letters, then read words without matras, then learn matras. Here is how to teach Hindi to toddlers, preschoolers and 5 year olds without pressure:

AgeWhat is usualWhat to do here
2-3 yearsListens and repeats sounds, enjoys songsSing अ से अनार, आ से आम aloud. Tap a few swar in Listen mode together. No reading yet.
3-4 years (nursery)Recognises the first letter of own name and 6-8 lettersStart with म क ल न ज र. Play Find it with only two choices.
4-5 years (LKG)Recognises most vyanjan, reads words like जल, घरUse the full varnamala, then move to two letter Hindi words.
5-6 years (UKG)Learns matras, reads 2-3 letter wordsGo on to the Hindi barakhadi and matra chart.

If you only want the vowels, open अ से अनार, the Hindi swar page. For consonants only, try क से कबूतर, the Hindi vyanjan page. Smaller sets suit younger children.

Five to ten minutes a day at home

  1. Day 1-3: five minutes of Listen mode on your lap. Say each picture word with the audio.
  2. Kitchen hunt: say "आ से आम, what else starts with आ?" and let your child find आलू or आटा.
  3. Letter of the day: write one letter large on paper. Your child decorates it with rice grains, rajma or crayons. This is the first step in Hindi writing for kids, long before neat handwriting.
  4. Market walk: point at shop boards and packets. Hindi letters are everywhere in India, and each one your child spots is real reading practice.
  5. Finish with Find it: two or three rounds, one marble, done.

Learning Hindi alphabets with pictures works because the picture carries the memory. Ask "What was the pigeon letter?" rather than "What is this letter?".

Is Hindi an easy language to learn?

For a young child, yes. Devanagari is phonetic: each letter almost always makes the same sound, so once your child knows the letters, reading is mostly a matter of joining them. English has "cat" and "city" with the same c; Hindi does not play such tricks. The harder parts are the many letters (50 against 26), sound pairs such as त/ट and द/ड that English speakers mix up, and matras. Take them slowly and the Hindi alphabet becomes easy for kids.

If your family speaks Tamil, Bengali, Malayalam or another Indian language, your child may know some letter names already. Most Indian scripts share the same varg order, so a child who knows क ख ग in one script finds the pattern familiar in the next.

For families abroad and bilingual homes

If you live outside India, this page lets you learn Hindi alphabets through English: every letter shows its sound in Roman letters (a, aa, ka, kha) and its picture word in English. Grown-ups who are learning Hindi letters for beginners can play alongside the child. Mixing Hindi and English in one sentence is normal in bilingual children; never mark Hinglish as a mistake.

No pressure: keep it happy

  • Praise effort: "You listened so carefully!" matters more than a correct answer.
  • If your child gets frustrated, go back to Listen mode, or stop and sing. Letters will still be there tomorrow.
  • For a child with speech delay, let them point instead of say; hearing the letter again and again still builds sounds. Talk to your paediatrician if you are worried about speech.
  • For autistic children, keep the same routine each day, turn on calm sound and fewer choices, and let them repeat a favourite letter as often as they want.
  • Screen time: sit with your child, keep sessions short (5-10 minutes), and for under-2s, singing letters with a grown-up and real objects is better than a screen.

When the varnamala feels easy, try Hindi ginti 1 to 100 for numbers, or the English ABCD with pictures page to compare the two alphabets.

Hindi Varnamala: questions parents ask

How many letters are in the Hindi varnamala?
This page shows 50: 11 swar, the 2 signs अं and अः, 33 main vyanjan and the 4 joined letters क्ष त्र ज्ञ श्र. Some school books show 52 because they also add ड़ and ढ़. Follow the count in your child's school book.
What is swar and vyanjan in English?
Swar are vowels, sounds you can say on their own (अ, आ, इ). Vyanjan are consonants, which need a vowel sound to be spoken (क is really k + अ).
How to teach Hindi to preschoolers?
Start with sound and song: sing अ से अनार, tap letters in Listen mode, and point at letters on packets and signs. Recognising letters comes at 3-4, reading words without matras at 4-5, and matras at 5-6.
How long does it take to learn the Hindi alphabet?
Most children learn to recognise the swar in a few weeks of short daily play, and the vyanjan over several months. There is no rush: five calm minutes a day works better than one long session.
Is there a Hindi alphabet chart PDF?
There is no separate PDF. The word list on this page is the chart, with pictures, Hindi, English and pronunciation, and it prints cleanly. Use your browser's Print button.
Can I learn the Hindi alphabet online for free here?
Yes. Everything is free, with no sign-up and no ads, and it works on phones, tablets and computers.
How to learn the Hindi alphabet in English?
Each letter here shows its sound in Roman letters (ka, kha, ga) and its picture word in English, and the audio can play in English first. Use the अ+A button to choose the order.
Should my child write the letters now?
At 3-5 years, drawing and tracing big shapes is enough. Real Hindi writing for kids starts with their own name at about 5-6; recognising letters comes before writing them.
