What your child learns about colours, by age

Colours feel easy to grown-ups, but they are surprisingly hard for toddlers. A colour is not a thing you can hold; it is a property of many things. That is why a child may call every colour "blue" for months and then, suddenly, get them all. India's NCF for the Foundational Stage expects children aged 3-4 to name the primary colours (red, blue, yellow) and common colours like black, white and brown, and older children to predict mixed colours.

How to use this colours game

Listen

Every colour tile speaks its name. Let a toddler tap around freely; there is nothing to get right or wrong.

Find it

Golu, our glass marble friend, asks "Where is green?" and shows big colour choices. If your child taps another colour, the game never says "wrong". It names the colour they chose, then the right answer glows, and on a third try Golu points to it. Each finished game drops a marble into the Goli Jar. Tap the jar and count the marbles together.

Memory

Colour cards turn face down and your child looks for pairs. Two year olds get 3 pairs; 5-6 year olds get 8.

The अ+A button changes the language order: Hindi then English, English then Hindi, Hindi only or English only. Settings (behind a grown-up check) let you set your child's age and turn on calm motion, calm sound, captions, fewer choices or high contrast.

Colours name kaise likhate hain? In English, write the word under a coloured dot: red, blue, green. In Hindi, रंगों के नाम हिंदी में are written the same way: लाल, नीला, हरा. If your child is learning रंगों के नाम इंग्लिश में, say the Hindi word first and then the English one, which is exactly what the Hindi-then-English setting does.

How to teach colours name to kids in 5-10 minutes a day

How to introduce colors to toddlers? Pick one colour for a whole week and live in it. Red week means red socks, red tomatoes, red car, red bindi, and saying "red, लाल" each time. Then add a second colour and play "which one is red?" with two objects. That is also how you introduce colours to preschoolers: few at a time, with real things.

  1. Kitchen sort. Put out green peas, yellow dal and red rajma in small bowls. Your child sorts a mixed spoonful into the right bowls.
  2. Colour of the day. At breakfast, choose a colour. Everyone points to that colour whenever they see it, all day.
  3. Market game. At the fruit stall, ask "Can you find something purple?" Brinjal, grapes and jamun are all fair answers.
  4. Park walk. Collect one green leaf, one brown stick, one yellow flower. Lay them on a white paper at home and name them.
  5. Clothes line. When folding laundry, your child makes a pile of every blue thing.

For how to teach colors to kids in English when you speak Hindi at home, keep the Hindi word and add the English one after it. Children in bilingual homes learn both, and nobody gets confused. Pair colours with shapes too ("a red circle, a yellow star") on our shapes name for kids page, since shapes and colors together are the classic first maths pair.

Rainbow colours and colour mixing for kids

How to learn rainbow colours for kids? The rainbow has seven: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. In Hindi, many children learn it as बैं नी आ ह पी ना ला (बैंगनी, नीला, आसमानी, हरा, पीला, नारंगी, लाल), read from violet to red. For a young child, just point at a real rainbow after rain, or at the colours a glass of water throws on the wall in the sun.

A 5 year old is ready for this simple colour mixing for kids chart. Try it with poster paint or with food colour in water.

There is no PDF download on this site. For a colors for kids worksheet, print this page from your browser: the word list prints as a clean colours chart with pictures and Hindi and English names. Colours in Indian festivals and around the world

India is a wonderful place to learn colours. Holi is the obvious one: before you play, name each gulal colour together, and choose skin-safe colours for kids. Diwali brings yellow diyas and colourful rangoli, Pongal and Onam bring flower carpets, and the national flag teaches saffron, white and green with a navy blue wheel. Our flowers name in Hindi and fruits name in Hindi and English pages are full of colour too. Around the world, children learn the same basic colours first; only the spelling changes, "colours" in India and the UK and "colors" in the US.

Gentle tips for every child

  • Praise the looking. "You found the green one by looking carefully" builds patience.
  • If your child keeps mixing up blue and green, that is normal until about 4. Put the two side by side often and name them.
  • If your child gets frustrated, switch to Listen, or stop and sort real toys by colour instead.
  • Speech delay: accept pointing and let your child hand you "the red one". Say the word for them. Talk to your paediatrician if you are worried.
  • Autism: many autistic children enjoy sorting by colour. Use calm sound, fewer choices and the same short routine each day.
  • Colour vision: if your child reliably confuses red and green after age 5, mention it at the next eye check. It is common in boys and easy to work around.

About screens: children under 2 learn colours far better from a grown-up and real objects than from any screen. For ages 2 to 5, WHO and the Indian Academy of Paediatrics suggest up to an hour a day, with you playing alongside. A 5-10 minute round here, then a colour hunt in the room, is plenty.
