What your child learns here, age by age
Shapes are one of the first maths ideas a child meets. India's NCF for the Foundational Stage lists shapes and colours among the earliest learning goals, and most preschool programmes around the world agree on four basic shapes: circle, square, triangle and rectangle. Everything else is a bonus.

So what are the basic shapes for preschool? Circle, square, triangle and rectangle first. Star, heart and oval come easily because children love them. Pentagon, hexagon and crescent belong to the UKG and class 1 stage, when children begin to count sides.
How to use this page
Listen
Every tile speaks. Tap the triangle and your child hears its name in Hindi and English. Let a toddler tap freely for a minute. There is no score in this mode.
Find it
Golu, our friendly glass marble, asks "Where is the square?" and shows big picture choices. If your child taps another shape, the game never says "wrong". It says the name of the shape they tapped, then makes the right answer glow, and on a third try Golu points at it. Each round ends with a marble in the Goli Jar. Tap the jar and count the marbles together.
Memory
Cards turn face down and your child finds matching pairs. A 2-3 year old gets 3 pairs; a 5-6 year old gets 8. It is a quiet way to practise the shapes name game without any speaking pressure.
The अ+A button at the top changes the order of languages: Hindi then English, English then Hindi, Hindi only or English only. If your child speaks Hindi at home, start with Hindi only, then add English after a week.
In Settings (behind a quick grown-up check) you can set your child's age, which changes the number of choices. You can also switch on calm motion, calm sound, captions, fewer choices and high contrast.

A star has five points, and a heart has curves and one point at the bottom, like a पान leaf. Neither is a "maths shape" in textbooks, but both are good for building confidence in 2 and 3 year olds.
How to teach shapes for kids at home in 5-10 minutes a day
You do not need flashcards. How to learn shapes for kids is mostly about touching, finding and talking. Try one of these each day, then play one round on this page.
- Kitchen hunt. While you cook, hold up a roti ("circle"), a paratha cut into four ("triangles") and a biscuit ("square"). Ask your child to find one more circle.
- Feel bag. Put a bangle, a dice and a small box in a cloth bag. Your child feels one without looking and guesses the shape.
- Body shapes. Make a circle with your arms, a triangle with two hands, a long rectangle by lying on the floor. Four year olds love this.
- Market walk. At the sabzi mandi, point out round tomatoes, oval eggs and square crates. Say the name in both languages.
- Chalk on the floor. Draw a big circle, square and triangle in the park or on the balcony. Call out a shape and your child jumps into it.

How to introduce shapes for kids under 3
Start with only one shape for a whole week. A circle is best, because it is everywhere: plates, wheels, the sun, a bindi. Say "round, circle, गोला" each time. Then add a square, then a triangle. Two year olds learn by matching before naming, so a shape sorter toy or the Memory game here is perfect.
Shapes for kids drawing, tracing and colouring
Drawing a circle is a normal skill at about 3 years when a grown-up shows how. Copying a square usually comes around 4, and a triangle closer to 5. Do not push tracing too early. For a 3 year old, a finger drawing in sand, rangoli powder or flour on a tray is better than a pencil. Shapes name kaise likhe? In English, write the name in small letters under the picture: circle, square, triangle. In Hindi, write गोला, वर्ग, त्रिभुज. For class 1 and class 2, add the number of sides next to the name.
What are 3D shape names?
Flat shapes like a square are 2D; solid things you can hold are 3D. The main 3D shapes names for kids are cube (a dice), sphere (a ball), cylinder (a glass or a pipe), cone (an ice cream cone) and cuboid (a brick or a book). This page includes the cube so children meet the idea. At age 5-6, pick up a dice and count its six square faces together. The rest can wait for school.
Shapes around India and the world
India is full of shapes. Rangoli and kolam patterns use circles, triangles and diamonds. Diwali diyas are small ovals, kites during Makar Sankranti are diamonds, and the moon's crescent marks Eid. Honeybees build hexagons because they fit together with no gaps. In the UK and Australia children say "shapes and colours"; in the US it is "shapes and colors". The shapes are the same everywhere, which makes them a friendly first topic for bilingual and new-to-English children.
Gentle tips for every child
- Praise effort, not speed. "You looked at every corner" means more than "clever".
- If your child gets frustrated, stop and switch to Listen mode, or put the phone down and play with real blocks. Come back tomorrow.
- Speech delay: pointing counts as an answer. Say the name for your child, and celebrate any sound they make.
- Autistic children often enjoy shapes because they are predictable. Use calm sound and fewer choices in Settings, and keep the same routine each day.
- Bilingual homes: use the language you speak most first. Children do not get confused by two names; they get a richer map of words.
A word on screens: children under 2 are better off with a grown-up and real objects than any screen. For 2 to 5 year olds, WHO and the Indian Academy of Paediatrics suggest no more than an hour a day, with you sitting alongside. Short sessions of 5-10 minutes, played together, work best.
