Many sea animals are not fish at all. A whale, a dolphin and a seal breathe air and feed their babies milk, just like a cow. An octopus has no bones. A starfish is not a fish. Children aged 5-6 love these surprises.

Water animals for toddlers (2-3 years)

How to learn about sea animals when you live far from the coast? Use water play. These ideas take 5-10 minutes:

1. Bath-time ocean: float a toy fish and a toy boat, and name each animal as it "swims".
2. Bucket sort: put pictures of sea animals in a blue bucket and land animals in a brown box.
3. Fish market walk: in many Indian cities you can see fish, prawns and crabs at the market. Name them together, calmly and kindly.
4. Pond visit: in the monsoon, listen for frogs croaking near puddles and ponds.
5. Move like them: wiggle like a jellyfish, walk sideways like a crab, and flap your arms like a seal's flippers.

Bilingual homes can use both languages freely. If you are worried about your child's speech, talk to your paediatrician.

Play together and keep it short. For children under 2, bath toys, picture books and a grown-up's voice are better than a screen.
