Games for 2 year olds to play together

Pick a game below and sit with your toddler. Each one uses big pictures, clear audio in Hindi and English, and only two or three choices at a time.

For grown-ups बड़ों के लिए

These games for 2 year olds are small, slow and friendly. A two-year-old learns best from your voice, your lap and real things to touch, so every game on this page is built to be played together: you point, your child taps, and you both say the word out loud. The cards above lead to eight gentle learning games for toddlers, and the sections below explain why each one suits this age and what to do away from the screen.

Why these games suit a 2 year old

Between the second and third birthday most children go from about 50 words to a few hundred, start joining two or three words ("doggie run", "more roti"), and love to name things in picture books. They can follow a two-step instruction, sort by one colour or size, and remember where a toy was hidden. Their attention lasts a few minutes, not twenty. So good toddler games have big pictures, very few choices, lots of repetition and a reward that feels calm, not flashy.

That is the rule behind every game we picked. With the age set to 2-3 in Settings, the site shows two or three pictures at a time, never says "wrong", and ends each round with a marble in Golu's Goli Jar. Tap the jar and count the marbles together: "one, two, three!"

What each game teaches

GameWhy it suits age 2What to say while you play
Animal soundsToddlers copy sounds before they copy words. "Moo" and "baa" are easy first words."The cow says moo. Can you say moo?"
Animals nameFamiliar animals (cow, dog, cat) match the first-words list."Where is the dog? Yes, there!"
Fruits nameFruits are in your kitchen, so the word turns real at snack time."Kela, banana. Shall we eat one?"
Colours nameMost children know at least one colour by about two and a half."Red, like your ball."
Baby keyboardEvery tap makes a sound, which teaches cause and effect with no wrong answers."You pressed it! What came out?"
Body partsPointing to nose, eyes and tummy is a classic milestone at this age."Where is your nose? Where is Golu's nose?"
Vehicles nameBuses, trains and auto-rickshaws pass your window every day."Chhuk-chhuk, here comes the train."
Memory gameThree pairs is just right for a young memory. Start with two."Where did the mango hide?"

How to play with your toddler on a phone, tablet or computer

There is nothing to download. The games run in any browser, so you can use them as games for 2 year olds on phone, on an iPad or as learning games for toddlers on computer. Once a page has opened it keeps working on a weak connection. It is free, with no sign-up and no ads.

  • Set the age first. Open Settings (there is a short grown-up check) and pick 2-3. You can also switch on calm motion, calm sound and fewer choices.
  • Choose your language order. The +A button in the header plays Hindi then English, English then Hindi, or only one language. In a Hindi-speaking home, start with Hindi first.
  • Keep it short. Play one game for five to ten minutes, then stop while your child is still smiling.
  • Talk more than the screen does. Repeat each word, add an action ("the elephant goes stomp, stomp") and wait for your child to try.

Screen time at this age: Indian (IAP) and WHO guidance allow no more than one hour a day in total for two-year-olds, and less is better. Play together, keep each session short, and avoid screens at meals and in the hour before sleep. For children under 2, a grown-up with real toys and picture books is better than any screen; see learning for 1 year old babies instead.

Activities for 2 year olds at home, without a screen

Most of your child's day should be real play. The best activities for 2 year olds at home use things you already have. Each idea below takes five minutes and links back to a game above, so the screen word becomes a real one.

Easy activities in the house

  • Sound hunt. Listen for the pressure-cooker whistle, a doorbell, a crow outside. Ask "What made that sound?" This is the real version of the animal sounds game.
  • Colour basket. Put three red things and three yellow things in a pile. Sort them into two steel bowls together.
  • Fruit bag. Hide a banana, an apple and an orange in a cloth bag. Your child reaches in, feels one and you name it.
  • "Touch your…" song. Sing "head, shoulders, knees and toes" slowly, then in Hindi: सिर, कंधे, घुटने, पैर.
  • Stacking and pouring. Katoris, cups and dry rice build hand control. These are simple fine motor activities for 2 year olds.

Quiet activities and travel ideas

For quiet activities for 2 year olds before a nap, try a picture book where your child points and you name. On a plane or train, bring stickers, a small notebook and chunky crayons; a sticker on each finger is a whole game. Save the screen for a short, shared moment, not the whole journey.

Outdoor and movement play

Two-year-olds need about three hours of moving play spread through the day. Walk to the park and name every animal and vehicle you see. Play "be a train" in a line, jump with both feet over a chalk line, kick a big ball, or dance to a rhyme. In the monsoon, splash in a puddle and name "rain, बारिश".

DIY idea: tape a big sheet of paper to the floor and let your child scribble with a fat crayon while you name the colour. It is a free, printable-free art activity and the start of pre-writing.

Toddler games for nursery, daycare and play school

Teachers can use these as activities for 2 year olds in nursery, at daycare or in a play school circle. Put the game on a tablet or a laptop connected to a big screen and let children take turns tapping. The Find it game ("Where is the mango?") works well as a group call-and-response. Keep circle time to ten minutes and follow it with a real-object basket. Parents who follow EYFS or Montessori ideas can pair the games with trays of real objects: a fruit tray, a colour-sorting tray, a vehicle tray.

Montessori activities for 2 year olds, such as pouring, spooning and matching real objects, sit well beside these games. EYFS activities for 2 year olds focus on talk, movement and feelings, which is exactly what the games prompt. Worksheets are not needed for 2 year olds; a worksheet asks for pencil control that most toddlers do not have yet.

Teaching activities for 2 year olds work best when they are easy and quick: one word, one picture, one action. On a rainy day indoors, a quick game of Find it followed by a real hunt around the room keeps 2 year olds busy and moving. Preschool activities for 2 year olds, whether at home or in a play group, should always leave time for free play.

For a birthday party, the calmest games for 2 year olds are musical statues, "pass the parcel" with a sticker in every layer, and a bubble chase. Nobody loses, and every child gets a turn.

What should a 2 year old know?

Parents often ask what should a 2 year old know academically. The honest answer: very little that looks like school. By about two and a half, many children say around 50 words (count both languages together), name things in a book, use "I" and "me", point to body parts, know at least one colour and play pretend. Counting "one, two" and knowing big versus small is plenty. Letters and writing come later. Our guide to what a 3 year old should know covers the next year in detail.

Every child is different. If your two-year-old does not yet join two words of their own, does not point to show you things, or has lost words or skills they once had, talk to your paediatrician. Early help is simple and very effective.

Adapting games for speech delay, autism and bilingual homes

For a child with speech delay, use the Listen mode and say one word at a time, slowly, then pause. Accept any attempt: a sound, a sign, a point. For activities for 2 year olds with autism, switch on calm sound and fewer choices, keep the same game each day for a routine, and give a warning before you stop ("two more, then bath"). In a bilingual home, mixing Hindi and English in one sentence is normal. Speak the language you are most comfortable in; the site gives your child the other one.

If your child gets frustrated, stop. Put the phone away, give a hug, and go back to blocks. A toddler learns more from a happy five minutes than a tearful fifteen.

How to make learning fun for toddlers

  1. Follow their lead. If your child loves trucks, start with vehicles.
  2. Repeat, repeat. Toddlers like the same game ten times. That is how words stick.
  3. Praise the effort. "You found it! You looked so carefully."
  4. Make it silly. Say "the cow says quack!" and let your child correct you.
  5. Take it outside. Every word on the screen should also be seen, touched or tasted in real life.

When your child turns three, move on to games for 3 year olds, which add letters, counting and shapes. For all our games in one place, see learning games for kids.

Games for 2 Year Olds: questions parents ask

What games are good for toddlers?
Good toddler games are short, have big pictures and only two or three choices, and let you play together. Animal sounds, naming fruits and animals, colours, body parts and a simple memory game are ideal. Real play such as stacking cups, sorting colours and ball games matters even more.
Are these games for 2 year olds free?
Yes. Every game is free, with no sign-up, no ads and nothing to download. They work in the browser on a phone, iPad, tablet or computer.
How long should a 2 year old play games on a phone?
Keep each session to 5-10 minutes and the whole day under one hour, as Indian (IAP) and WHO guidance advise. Play together and avoid screens at meals and before sleep.
What activities can you do with 2 year olds at home?
Sort things by colour, hunt for sounds, name fruit from a bag, sing body-part songs, pour rice between cups, scribble with fat crayons, and play chase or "be a train". Each idea takes about five minutes.
What should a 2 year old know academically?
Not much that looks like school. By about two and a half, many children use around 50 words, name pictures, point to body parts, know a colour and play pretend. Letters and writing come later. If you are worried, talk to your paediatrician.
Can my toddler learn English with these games?
Yes, gently. Every word is spoken in Hindi and English with clear audio, and the अ+A button changes the order. Keep your home language strong too; children learn a second language best when the first is secure.
Are there printable activities for 2 year olds?
There is no PDF file, but you can print the page from your browser; the word list for grown-ups prints cleanly. At this age real objects work better than worksheets.
What are good games for a 2 year old birthday party?
Musical statues, bubble chasing, pass the parcel with a sticker in every layer, and a simple dance. Choose games where no one is "out".
