Family members name in English and Hindi can be a puzzle even for grown-ups, because Hindi has a separate word for almost every relative while English uses "uncle" and "aunt" for nearly all of them. A few more words your child will hear: ताऊ (Tau) and ताई (Tai) are Papa's elder brother and his wife; फूफा (Phupha) is Bua's husband; मौसा (Mausa) is Mausi's husband. Families from different regions use their own words too, such as Ajja and Ajji in Kannada, Thatha and Paati in Tamil, or Aaji and Ajoba in Marathi. Whatever your family says at home is the right word for your child.
Why does Hindi have so many family words?
In English, "grandmother" can be either Dadi or Nani, and "uncle" can mean Chacha, Mama, Tau, Phupha or Mausa. Hindi and most Indian languages name the exact relation: whose side (father's or mother's), older or younger, and by birth or by marriage. That is why a family members name list in Hindi is longer than the English one. Teach your child the English word too, for school and friends abroad, but use the Hindi word for the real person: "This is Nani, your grandmother, Maa's mother."
How to use the family game
- Listen: tap a picture and hear, for example, "Grandmother, Nani, नानी" with a short line: "Nani is your maa's mother."
- Find it: Golu asks "Where is Bua?" and your child taps from 2 to 4 pictures. The game never says "wrong". A mistaken tap hears the name of the person tapped, then the right picture glows, then Golu points.
- Memory: turn cards to find matching pairs, good for 4- to 6-year-olds.
Each game ends with a marble in the Goli Jar; tap it to count your marbles together. The अ+A button switches between Hindi first, English first, or one language only. Settings, behind a grown-up check, let you set your child's age and turn on fewer choices, calm sound, calm motion and captions. The pictures show people with different skin tones and hair, because families look different.

How to teach family members name to kids at home
- Photo album: sit with old photos and ask "Who is this?" Add one fact: "Mama lives in Pune. He loves cricket."
- Video calls: before a call, say "We are calling Mausi, Maa's sister." After it, ask your child to tell Papa who called.
- Festivals: Raksha Bandhan (Bua ties a rakhi on Papa's wrist), Bhai Dooj and weddings are full of relatives. Name each one as you greet them.
- Finger family: give each finger a name: thumb is Dada, index finger is Dadi, and so on. Sing it in Hindi and English.
- Pretend play: use dolls or spoons as the family and act out a dinner. "Nani is serving dal. Chacha is laughing."
Make a simple family tree: draw your child in the middle, parents above, then Dada and Dadi on one side and Nana and Nani on the other. Add real photos if you have them. It is the easiest way to show "whose side" a relative is on, and it makes a lovely family tree project for class 1 or UKG.
Types of family: every family is a real family
How many types of family are there? For young children, name them simply and without ranking them:
- Joint family: grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts and cousins in one home, common in India.
- Nuclear family: parents and children living together.
- Single-parent family: a child lives with one parent.
- Grandparent-led family: a child is raised by Dada-Dadi or Nana-Nani.
- Adoptive, foster and blended families: children who joined by adoption, or step-parents and step-siblings.
Can a family be a family without a child, or with just two people? Yes. A family is the people who love and care for each other. If your child has a relation that is missing on this page, or a picture that does not match your home, say so openly: "Our family has two grandmothers and no chacha, and that is fine." Children notice when their family is left out, so include step-parents, a parent who lives far away, or a family member who has died, in your own words.
Writing family members name (kaise likhe)
Many Hindi family words repeat a sound, which makes them easy early writing words: मामा, नाना, दादा, चाचा, दीदी. They also teach matras: नाना and नानी show the difference between aa and ee. In English, start with Mother, Father, Brother, Sister. What does "family members name" mean? (family members name ka matlab kya hota hai)
When a school asks for family members name, it means the words we use for each relative: mother, father, grandmother and so on, in English and in Hindi. In Hindi you would say परिवार के सदस्यों के नाम. It does not mean the personal names of your relatives, although a child can add those too ("My Nani's name is Kamla").
Family members name for class 1 and UKG
For UKG, the usual homework is five family members name with pictures: mother, father, brother, sister and grandmother.
For class 1, children often learn about 10 family members name in English and Hindi, with spelling. The word list on this page covers all of these, and it doubles as a chart when you print it.
- Family members for toddlers: keep to the people your toddler sees every day, and show a photo each time you say the word.
- Photo board activity: stick family photos on a family members name board by the door and label each one in both languages.
- Question game: ask one family members name question at dinner, such as "Who is Mama's sister to you?" (Mausi!).
- Spelling practice: older children can learn family members name spelling for Mother, Father, Sister, Brother, Grandmother and Grandfather, which share easy endings.
- Other languages: if your family speaks Kannada and English, or Bengali, Odia or Tamil at home, write those family words next to the Hindi ones. A children's family names list in three languages is something to be proud of.
The best way to learn family members name is still the real thing: every time a relative visits, your child greets them by their relationship name, and the word sticks.
Calm, inclusive learning
Praise effort: "You remembered that Bua is Papa's sister!" If your child gets confused, which is normal with so many relatives, go back to the five people they see most. For a child with speech delay, pointing to the right photo is success. Autistic children often enjoy the order of a family tree and may like a printed chart with photos. In bilingual or mixed-language homes, use the words each side of the family uses, and the अ+A button to hear one language at a time. Keep screen play short and shared; for children under 2, real photos and real voices on a call are better than a screen game. If you are worried about your child's language, talk to your paediatrician.
