These games for 3 year olds are built for the age of endless questions. Three-year-olds want to know what things are called, how many there are and why the sky is blue. Why these games suit a 3 year old
Between three and four, most children start speaking in sentences of four or more words, retell bits of a story, count out loud to ten and reliably count about five real objects. They can name a few colours, match shapes, clap the beats in a word (ट-मा-टर) and spot a rhyme. They play with other children, take turns with help, and name simple feelings like happy, sad and scared. In India this is the Nursery year (Balvatika 1 in the Aadharshila curriculum); in the UK it is Nursery and in the US it is Pre-K 3.
So the best learning games for 3 year olds are short (10-15 minutes), offer three or four choices, speak every word clearly, and give a gentle hint instead of a buzzer. That is how every game here works: a wrong tap gets a hint, never "wrong", and each round ends with a marble in the Goli Jar.

How to play on a phone, tablet or iPad
You can use these as games for 3 year olds on phone, as educational games for 3 year olds on tablet or iPad, or on a computer. Everything runs in the browser: free, no app to install, no sign-up. Once a page has loaded it keeps working when the network is weak.
- Set the age to 3-4 in Settings (behind a short grown-up check). The games then show three or four choices and a few more questions per round.
- Pick the language order with the अ+A button: Hindi first, English first, or one language only. For games for 3 year olds learning English, try English first with Hindi as the helper.
- Turn on calm motion or calm sound if your child gets over-excited, and captions if you want to read along.
- Play together. Sit side by side, say each word aloud, and ask a question the screen does not ask: "Where have we seen a peacock?"
Screen time: for ages 2-5, Indian (IAP) and WHO guidance say no more than one hour a day in total, in sessions of 20-30 minutes at most, with a grown-up. Keep our games to 10-15 minutes, avoid screens at meals and in the hour before bed, and follow every game with real play.
Activities for 3 year olds at home
Three-year-olds need about three hours of active play a day. Screen games are a small part; real play is the main event. These easy activities for 3 year olds take 5-10 minutes and each one matches a game above.
Kitchen and home activities
- Count the laddoos. Put four laddoos or biscuits on a plate. Count them by touching each one, then ask "How many?" The last number you say is the answer; that idea is the heart of early maths.
- Shape hunt. Find a circle (plate, roti, clock), a square (tile, window) and a triangle (samosa, a folded chapati).
- Vegetable sort. Sort the sabzi bag into red, green and other colours, or into big and small.
- Syllable claps. Clap names: "A-ni-ka" is three claps, "Raj" is one.
- Name letters. Write your child's name in big letters on a card. Stick it on their door.
Outdoor and sports activities
At the park, count steps up the slide, name every bird you hear, and play "follow the leader" with animal walks: hop like a frog, stomp like an elephant. Catching a large ball, pedalling a tricycle and climbing are the right sports activities for 3 year olds; formal coaching can wait.
Quiet games and travel
For quiet games for 3 year olds, try "What's missing?": put four toys on a tray, cover them, take one away, and ask which one went. On a plane or long train ride, bring a sticker book, a small puzzle and a bag of pipe cleaners. A few minutes of a counting game is fine; a whole journey of screens is not.
Simple board games for 3 year olds, such as picture lotto, snakes and ladders with a big dice, or a memory game with three or four pairs, teach turn-taking and counting better than any toy that "thinks" for the child. Good educational toys for 3 year olds for brain development are open-ended: blocks, playdough, a doctor set, a toy kitchen.
Preschool games for 3 year olds in the classroom
Teachers can use these as preschool games for 3 year olds in the classroom, in play school, or as activities for 3 year olds at daycare and childcare. Connect a tablet or laptop to a big screen for circle time and let children take turns. The Find it mode ("Where is the triangle?") works as a group game where everyone points. Follow each ten-minute game with a hands-on table: a shape-sorting tray, a counting basket or a feelings mirror. For a birthday party, the easiest games for 3 year olds are musical chairs with enough chairs for everyone, a treasure hunt for coloured balls, "Simon says" and a balloon keep-up. Keep the rules simple and give every child a prize.
What should a 3 year old know for preschool?
You do not need to teach reading before preschool. Most schools hope a 3 year old can say their name, talk in short sentences, follow a two-step instruction, use the toilet with help, eat on their own and play near other children. Every child grows at their own pace. If your three-year-old is hard for family members to understand, does not play pretend, or has lost skills they used to have, talk to your paediatrician.
Adapting games for every child
If your child finds a game hard, switch on "fewer choices" and play Listen mode first, where tapping only names the picture. For a child with speech delay, pause after each word and accept any attempt. For an autistic child, keep a steady routine (same game, same time), use calm sound, and show a timer before stopping. In bilingual homes, mixing Hindi and English is normal and never wrong. Praise effort ("you kept trying!") more than results, and stop at the first sign of tears.
