अ से अनार, आ से आम: for most Indian children, this little chant is the very first Hindi they learn to read. The swar are the easiest door into Hindi, because every one of them can be said on its own, with no help from another letter.

What is a Hindi swar?

A swar (स्वर) is a vowel: a sound made with the breath flowing freely, like "a", "ee" or "oo". In Hindi, swar can stand alone as letters, and they can also sit on a consonant as a small sign called a matra. The consonants are called vyanjan (व्यंजन) and need a vowel sound to be spoken. Together, Hindi swar and vyanjan make the Hindi varnamala.

How many Hindi swar are there?

This page follows the usual school primer and shows 13 cards: 11 swar plus अं and अः. Strictly, grammar books call अं (anusvar) and अः (visarg) ayogvah, not swar, which is why some books say 11 and others say 13. If your child's school book says 13, it is counting these two. Both answers are correct; just use the same number as the class book.

A se anar chart: all 13 Hindi swar with words and matras

This chart shows each swar with the exact picture word the game uses, how it is said in English, and the matra it becomes on a consonant (shown on क). The word list above has the same words with 🔊 buttons; this table adds the matra column.

No common Hindi word starts with अः; the sound is heard at the end of words, so the game uses छः (six). Some charts use एड़ी for ए or ओस for ओ; any real word that starts with the letter is fine.

How to play: Listen, Find it and Memory

• Listen (सुनो): tap any card. Your child hears "अ से अनार" and then "a, pomegranate" in English.
• Find it (ढूँढो): Golu asks "इ कहाँ है?" and shows a few swar. A wrong tap hears the name of what was tapped, then the right card glows. Nobody ever hears "wrong".
• Memory (जोड़ी): turn cards over two at a time to find matching swar pairs.

How to teach Hindi swar to kids at home

Start with the ear, not the pencil. Hindi swar for nursery children (age 3-4) are about hearing and saying; recognising the letter shapes grows out of that. Here is a gentle plan:

Teach the short and long pairs together

Six of the swar come in short and long pairs: अ/आ, इ/ई, उ/ऊ. Say the short one quickly and stretch the long one, clapping once for short and holding your hands wide for long. Children love the "stretchy" sound, and this is exactly the idea they will need later for ि/ी and ु/ू matras.

Kitchen and market ideas

• A pomegranate is perfect for अ से अनार: count the red seeds together (which also practises Hindi ginti).
• In mango season, every आम is an आ lesson. Say "आ से आम" before each bite.
• Show Grandma's ऐनक (spectacles) and let your child try them on for ऐ.
• At the market, find इमली or sugarcane (ईख) and let your child hold them.

How to write Hindi swar (a se anar kaise likha jata hai)

Parents often ask how the a se anar letter is written. Most Hindi letters are drawn in two parts: the letter shape, then the top line called the shirorekha (शिरोरेखा). For अ, draw a small "3"-like curve, a standing line to its right, a short line joining them, and then the top line. आ is अ with one more standing line. इ and ई share a shape, and so do उ and ऊ; the long form adds a small hook or tail.

Hindi swar formation on paper can wait until 5 or 6. Before that, let your child trace big letters in sand, on a steamy mirror or with a wet finger on the floor. If you want a tracing worksheet, draw large dotted letters on paper yourself; this site has no PDF worksheets, but the word list above prints cleanly for practice at the table.

The a se anar rhyme and songs

The familiar a se anar song is simply the chart sung aloud: "अ से अनार, आ से आम, इ से इमली, ई से ईख..." Many families have their own tune. Singing is the best way to learn Hindi swar before reading, because rhythm helps memory. Sing it in the car, while cooking, or clapping hands. There is no video here, but the Listen mode says every line clearly, so your child can "sing along" with the cards. A home a se anar hindi rhyme sung by you is worth more than any video song, because your child hears your voice and watches your mouth.

For grown-ups who read English only, the a se anar chart in English is simple: a for anar (pomegranate), aa for aam (mango), i for imli (tamarind), ee for eekh (sugarcane), u for ullu (owl), oo for oon (wool).

From अ से अनार to ज्ञ से ज्ञानी

Many families say the whole alphabet as one long chant, "a se anar gyani tak": it begins with the swar and ends with the last joined letter, ज्ञ से ज्ञानी (wise person). Hindi swar worksheet ideas for nursery class and class 1

Teachers often want a worksheet for the Hindi swar for nursery class, LKG or class 1. You can make one in two minutes from the chart on this page:

• Match it: draw five swar on the left and five pictures on the right (mango, owl, grapes). Your child draws a line from आ to the mango.
• Colour it: write one big swar in outline and let your child colour it in. Hindi swar for colouring is a calm way to meet the letter shape.
• Trace it: write dotted swar in a row for a Hindi swar tracing worksheet. Start with अ आ only.
• Find it on paper: write ten mixed letters and ask your child to circle every उ.

Hindi swar and English vowels

English has five vowel letters but many vowel sounds. Hindi gives each vowel sound its own letter, so what you see is what you say. If your child is also learning English, compare the two on the vowels for kids page: आ is like the "a" in "car", ई like the "ee" in "tree", ऊ like the "oo" in "zoo".

Keep it gentle

• Praise the trying: "You found the owl letter!" is enough.
• If your child gets upset in Find it, switch back to Listen mode or stop for the day.
• For children with speech delay, pointing counts as an answer. Talk to your paediatrician if you are worried.
• Autistic children often enjoy the predictable order of the cards; turn on calm sound and fewer choices in Settings.
• In bilingual homes, both languages help each other. Hinglish is normal.
• Keep screen time short and shared. Under-2s learn more from a grown-up singing and real objects than from a screen.
