What should a 3 year old know? A calm guide

Below you will find what most children can do at 2, 3 and just before 4, in language, numbers, feelings and movement, with simple ways to help at home.

What should a 3 year old know? Less than the internet suggests, and much more than a worksheet can show. A three-year-old is learning to talk in sentences, ask "why?", play with other children, run, climb and pretend. This guide sets out what most children can do around their third birthday and in the year after, using the CDC's 2022 milestones, India's NCF for the Foundational Stage (NCF-FS) and Aadharshila curriculum, and what Nursery classes in India typically cover. It also covers what a 2 year old should know, because many parents read this page in the months before the third birthday.

Every child is different. Children reach milestones across a wide range of ages, and bilingual children count words in both languages together. This page is a guide, not a test, and it cannot diagnose anything. If you are worried about your child's development, talk to your paediatrician. You know your child best.

What should a 2 year old know? (the year before 3)

Between two and three, children go from single words to short sentences. The CDC milestones at 2 years include pointing to things in a book when you ask, saying at least two words together ("more milk"), pointing to at least two body parts, kicking a ball and running. By 30 months (two and a half), most children say about 50 words, use "I", "me" or "we", name things in a picture book, play pretend (feeding a doll), follow two-step instructions ("pick up the ball and give it to me"), know at least one colour, jump with both feet and twist lids off jars.

So what should a 2 year old know academically? Almost nothing that looks like school. The "academics" of age two are talking, listening, sorting things by colour or size, saying "one, two" and knowing big from small. A 2 year old should be learning through play with you, not practising letters. Our games for 2 year olds keep it that simple.

What should a 2 year old learn, then? Words for everyday things, how to take a turn, how to ask for help. The best activities for 2 year olds at home are stacking cups, sorting socks, sand play and picture books, and the best games for 2 year olds at home are peekaboo, "Where is your nose?" and chasing bubbles.

What should a 3 year old know? Milestones by domain

These tables bring together the CDC 3-year milestones (what most children, 75% or more, can do by age 3), the NCF-FS learning goals for ages 3-4 (Balvatika 1) and what many Nursery classes cover. The last column shows how you can help at home.

What should a 3 year old know for preschool?

Parents often ask what a 3 year old should know before preschool, as if there were an entrance exam. For Nursery or play school, most teachers simply hope your child can:

  • say their name and tell you what they need ("water", "toilet"), in any language;
  • follow a simple instruction like "put your bag here";
  • eat a snack alone and try to wash their hands;
  • manage a short goodbye (tears at first are normal);
  • sit for a short story and play near other children.

Those are the real things a 3 year old should know going into preschool. Reading, writing and knowing all of ABCD are not expected. NEP 2020 and NCF-FS say learning from 3 to 6 should be play-based, in the home language where possible.

What do 3 year olds learn in preschool? (Nursery syllabus in India)

So what should a 3 year old learn in preschool? Mostly how to talk, play and belong in a group; the topics below are the vehicle for that.

Nursery syllabi differ between schools and boards, and NCF-FS does not set a fixed syllabus. Still, most Nursery or Balvatika 1 classes cover the same broad themes. Aadharshila, the national curriculum for Anganwadis, plans about 36 weeks of play-based learning with a weekly calendar and regular recap weeks.

AreaWhat a typical Nursery class covers
EnglishRhymes and stories; talking about pictures; letter sounds and shapes, often A-Z by sight over the year; pre-writing strokes (standing line, sleeping line, curve, circle)
HindiRhymes; स्वर spoken with pictures (अ से अनार); listening to stories
MathsCounting 1-10 (some schools 1-20); matching number to quantity up to 5; big/small; shapes; colours; simple patterns
Environment (EVS themes)Myself, my family, my body, fruits, vegetables, animals, birds, vehicles, seasons, festivals
Habits and feelingsHandwashing, please/thank you, sharing, tidying up, naming feelings
Movement and artOutdoor play, dance, colouring, clay, tearing and pasting paper

Most of these themes have a matching free game on this site: a se anar for Hindi vowels, counting 1 to 10, shapes name and colours name.

How to help your 3 year old learn at home

The best activities for 3 year olds at home are ordinary moments with you. Five to ten minutes of focused play a few times a day beats an hour at a table.

  • Talk all day. Describe what you are doing: "I am cutting the green bhindi into small pieces."
  • Read every day. Let your child turn pages and "read" the pictures back to you.
  • Count real things. Steps, spoons, bangles, chapatis.
  • Play pretend. A toy kitchen, a doctor set, a sabziwala shop. Pretend play builds language and thinking together.
  • Montessori-style trays. Pouring water, spooning beans, matching socks: simple Montessori activities for 3 year olds build hand control and focus.
  • Move a lot. Children aged 2-5 need about three hours of active play a day and 10-14 hours of sleep.

Short, shared screen games can add to this. Our games for 3 year olds are free educational games for 3 year olds at home, spoken in Hindi and English, and the IAP guidance of at most one hour a day in total (less is better) still applies.

Quick answers to common parent questions

What should a 2 year old know how to do?

Day to day, a two-year-old usually walks and runs, climbs onto furniture, eats with a spoon, drinks from an open cup with help, points to show you things and copies what you do. That is what a 2 year old should be doing: exploring, copying and helping.

What should a 2 year old be talking like?

At two, many children say single words and some two-word phrases; by two and a half, about 50 words. The average 2 year old knows many more words than they say, so watch what they understand too.

What do 2 year olds learn in preschool or play school?

Play school activities for 2 year olds are songs, stories, sand and water play, painting, and learning to sit in a circle for a few minutes. A 2 year old in preschool mostly learns to be with other children and a new grown-up.

What should an almost 3 year old know?

An almost-three-year-old often speaks in short sentences, knows their first name, sorts toys by colour, and enjoys pretend play and rhymes. Some can count two or three objects.

What should a 3 year old know how to do on their own?

By three, many children put on some clothes, use a fork, wash hands with help, and tidy toys when asked. A 3 year old should be allowed to try these things, even when it is slower.

What learning skills should a 3 year old know educationally?

Educationally, the learning skills that matter at three are listening, asking questions, paying attention for a few minutes and trying again after a mistake. These habits count for more than any fact.

What should a 3 1/2 year old know academically?

At three and a half, a child often counts out loud to ten, counts about three to five objects, names several colours, recognises a circle and a square, and may know the first letter of their name.

What should a 3 year old know before turning 4?

Before turning four, most children talk in sentences of four or more words, retell part of a story, play with other children and catch a big ball. These are the things the average 3 year old should know by the end of the year.

Are ABC games for 3 year olds a good idea?

Short ABC games for 3 year olds are fine if they are playful and shared. Start with the letters in your child's name, and choose free learning games for 3 year olds that speak each letter clearly, like our ABCD game.

When to talk to your paediatrician

The CDC advises acting early if a child is not meeting one or more milestones, has lost skills they once had, or if you have any other concern. Talk to your paediatrician if, by around three, your child:

  • has far fewer than 50 words across all their languages, or does not join words;
  • is not understood by familiar people most of the time;
  • does not play pretend or show interest in other children;
  • loses words, eye contact or skills they used to have (always a reason to check soon).

In India you can also ask your local government health centre or Anganwadi worker about developmental screening under RBSK. Early support is simple and helps a great deal. Going to the doctor is not a sign that something is wrong; it is a way to get answers.

What Should a 3 Year Old Know: questions parents ask

What should a 3 year old know academically?
Very little that looks like school. Most three-year-olds talk in short sentences, name some colours, count out loud a little, join in rhymes and sort things by colour or size. Letters and writing develop during the Nursery year. Every child is different.
What should a 2 year old know before turning 3?
By around two and a half, many children say about 50 words (in all languages combined), use "I" or "me", name pictures, play pretend, follow two-step instructions, know one colour and jump with both feet.
Should my 3 year old know the alphabet?
No. Knowing ABCD is not expected at three. The CDC lists naming some letters as a milestone at five. Sharing books, rhymes and the first letter of their own name is plenty now.
What should a 3 year old know before preschool?
Their name, how to ask for water or the toilet, how to follow a simple instruction, eat a snack alone and cope with a short goodbye. Tears at the start are normal.
How many words should a 2 year old say?
Around age two, many children use two-word phrases, and by 30 months about 50 words. Count words in every language your child speaks. If your two-year-old does not join two words of their own, talk to your paediatrician.
Is there a printable checklist?
There is no PDF, but you can print this page from your browser and use the tables as a simple checklist. It is a guide, not a test or a diagnosis.
My 3 year old mixes Hindi and English. Is that a problem?
No. Mixing languages is normal in bilingual children, who reach milestones at the same ages as other children. Keep speaking the language you are most comfortable in.
What should I do if I am worried about my child's development?
Talk to your paediatrician and ask about developmental screening. In India you can also ask your government health centre or Anganwadi worker. Acting early helps, and asking is always okay.
