Odd one out for kids is a thinking game with pictures: three things belong together and one does not. On this page Golu shows a set of pictures, for example a mango, a banana, an apple and a bus, and asks your child to find the one that is different. When your child taps it, they hear its name in Hindi and English. The pictures come from seven groups: fruits, vegetables, animals, vehicles, birds, clothes and musical instruments.
What is odd one out?
Odd one out means "the one that does not belong". In a group of cow, dog, cat and car, the car is the odd one because the others are animals. Teachers sometimes call it "odd man out" or "spot the difference in a group". In Hindi you can say जो अलग है, वो कौन सा है?
What is odd one out for kids really teaching? Three big skills at once: classification (putting things into groups), attention (looking at every picture before choosing) and vocabulary (knowing the word "fruit" or "vehicle"). India's NCF for the Foundational Stage lists "odd one out" as a suggested activity for sharpening observation, and sorting by a property is a core early maths goal worldwide.
How to play odd one out on this page
Each question shows a set of big pictures. All of them come from one group except one, which comes from a different group. Golu asks out loud, and your child taps the picture that does not belong.
- Ages 2-5 see 3 pictures: two that match and one odd one out.
- Ages 5-6 see 4 pictures: three that match and one odd one out.
- A round has 4 questions for age 2-3, 5 for 3-4, 6 for 4-5 and 8 for 5-6. Set the age in Settings, behind a grown-up check.
The game never says "wrong". If your child taps a picture that belongs, the game says its name and invites another look. A second miss makes the answer glow, and a third brings Golu to point at it. Every finished round adds a marble to the Goli Jar; tap the jar to count them together.
The अ+A button sets the language order: Hindi then English, English then Hindi, Hindi only or English only. The "fewer choices" setting keeps it to 3 pictures for any age, which helps if your child feels overwhelmed.
Ask "why?" after every answer
The real learning happens after the tap. Ask "Why is the bus the odd one out?" and help your child say "Because the others are fruits." Even a 3 year old can say "no eat!", which is a perfectly good reason.

The hardest questions in this game are the close ones, like birds versus animals, or fruits versus vegetables. A tomato or cucumber can start a lovely debate with an older child.

How to teach odd one out for kindergarten and preschool
Start with real objects before the screen. Sorting with hands comes before sorting with eyes.
- Kitchen tray. Put three spoons and one bangle on a tray. Ask "Which one is not a spoon?" Then swap roles: your child makes a tray for you.
- Laundry basket. Three socks and one cap. Which one goes on the head?
- Vegetable basket. Potatoes, onions and one orange. This one is great at the sabzi mandi.
- Toy line-up. Three cars and one teddy. Then make it harder: three red cars and one blue car.
- Park game. Collect three leaves and one stone, then hide them for a sibling to sort.

Odd one out for toddlers
For a 2 year old, keep it physical: three teddies and a cup on the bed. Point and say "Look, teddy, teddy, teddy... and cup!" Your toddler does not need to answer yet. Hearing you find the different one is the first step.
Odd one out activities for preschoolers
Preschoolers enjoy a "silly basket": you fill a basket with four things and ask them to spot the odd one out before they can have a snack. Change the rule each day: colour on Monday, shape on Tuesday, "things that fly" on Wednesday.
Odd one out concept for kindergarten
At kindergarten level, the concept moves from "looks different" to "belongs to a different group". Play a quick quiz in the car: you say four words and your child has ten seconds to pick. Odd one out in India and around the world
This game is a favourite of Indian school exams from LKG to class 5, and it appears in many aptitude tests for older students. Children around the world play the same idea in English, Hindi, Tamil or Arabic, because sorting is a universal thinking skill. You can use festival themes too: diya, rangoli, sweets and an umbrella (Diwali versus monsoon), or rakhi, kite, pichkari and school bag.
Gentle tips for every child
- Praise the reason, not the speed: "You told me why. That's great thinking."
- Accept creative answers. If your child says "the banana is odd because it is long", that is real reasoning. Say "Yes, and there's another reason too."
- If your child gets frustrated, switch on fewer choices, or go back to a real tray of objects.
- Speech delay: pointing is a full answer. You can say the reason for your child.
- Autism: many autistic children are excellent at sorting. Keep sessions predictable, use calm sound and calm motion, and let your child explain in their own way.
About screens: under-2s are better off sorting real objects with a grown-up than looking at any screen.
