These Hindi rhymes for kids are the बाल कविता and लोक गीत that Indian families have sung to children for generations: मछली जल की रानी है, चंदा मामा दूर के, आलू-कचालू बेटा कहाँ गए थे, अक्कड़-बक्कड़ बम्बे बो and अटकन-बटकन दही चटाकन. Why only traditional folk rhymes?
Many songs that feel like old बाल गीत are in fact film songs with a known writer, and they are still under copyright. लकड़ी की काठी was written by Gulzar for the film Masoom (1983), नानी तेरी मोरनी को मोर ले गए comes from the 1960 film Masoom, and तितली उड़ी is from the film Suraj (1966). We do not use them. Every rhyme here is a folk rhyme with no known author, passed from parent to child. For चंदा मामा दूर के we use only the old lullaby couplet, not the verses of the later film song. Folk rhymes change from village to village, so your family may sing a slightly different line, and that is fine. Sing it your way.
How to use the Hindi sing-along
- संगीत के साथ (With music): the voice sings each line while the tune plays underneath.
- धीरे, मेरे बाद गाओ (Slow, sing after me): after each line the voice says "अब तुम गाओ!" and the tune plays again so your child can sing it alone.
- बिना संगीत (No music): just the voice and the action pictures, for quiet times.

A Hindi poem for kids for nursery should be short, have a strong beat and give the child something to do with the hands. For children under 2, the best way is a grown-up singing in their lap; use this page to remember the words, then put the phone down.
How to teach Hindi to preschoolers with rhymes
Rhymes are one of the easiest answers to how to teach Hindi to preschoolers, especially in English-speaking or bilingual homes. The tune carries the sounds, so children say Hindi words they would never try in a sentence. Five to ten minutes a day is enough:
- One rhyme a week. Sing it at the same time each day, for example चंदा मामा at bedtime.
- Stop before the last word. "मछली जल की रानी ..." and wait for "है!"
- Use real things. Show a real आलू and बैंगन in the kitchen while singing आलू-कचालू. Our vegetables name game has both.
- Count with the rhyme. अक्कड़-बक्कड़ brings अस्सी, नब्बे, सौ; अटकन-बटकन brings सात कटोरी. Follow up with Hindi ginti.
- Link to letters. Point out that मछली starts with म and चंदा with च, then find them in the Hindi varnamala.
Ask grandparents which version they sang. Children love hearing that Nani sang आलू-कचालू too, and the rhyme becomes a family story.
Hindi poem for kids with moral
Parents often look for a Hindi kavita for kids with moral. Folk rhymes are playful rather than preachy, but each one opens a small talk:
- मछली जल की रानी है: animals need their home. We look at fish and do not take them out of the water.
- आलू-कचालू: when we are hurt, a hug from Mummy helps. It is fine to cry and then laugh again.
- चंदा मामा दूर के: sharing food, the moon gives the little one a cup of his पुए.
- अटकन-बटकन: things sometimes break, and people get upset, and then we make up.
Hindi poem for kids for competition and recitation
For a school Hindi poem for kids recitation or competition in LKG, UKG or class 1, choose a rhyme your child already enjoys. Practise in the "Slow, sing after me" mode, then say it without the tune. Teachers look for clear Hindi sounds, a steady voice, eye contact and actions. Simple props work well as a Hindi poem for kids with props: a paper fish, a round yellow moon or a real potato. Gentle tips
- Some children only listen for the first few days. That is normal.
- For children with speech delay, start with the actions and the fun sounds ("छप छप!"). Praise the try, not the result.
- In bilingual homes, read the English meaning once, then sing in Hindi. Children do not get confused by two languages.
- Keep it short and do it together. Co-singing with a grown-up is worth much more than watching alone.

Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: hindi rhymes on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
