Ordinal numbers for kids: first, second, third

Watch the animals race to the chequered flag, then tap the one that came first, second or third. Golu says the place in Hindi and English.

Ordinal numbers for kids answer the question "which place?" rather than "how many?". First, second, third, fourth and fifth are the words children use in races, queues and games, often before they know what to call them. This page turns them into an animal race. A rabbit, a turtle, a dog, a horse, an elephant, a lion or a monkey run along lanes to a chequered finish line with a flag. Then Golu asks "Who came second?" and your child taps the animal. Place badges 1, 2 and 3 pop up, and the voice says "The rabbit came second" and खरगोश दूसरे नंबर पर आया. It is free and works in any browser.

What are ordinal numbers? (cardinal vs ordinal)

A cardinal number tells how many: three animals. An ordinal number tells the position in an order: the third animal. The difference between cardinal and ordinal numbers is easy for adults but new for children, who have just learned that "three" means a group of three things. Now "third" means one thing in a particular place.

CardinalOrdinalShort formHindi

Notice that first, second and third do not sound like one, two and three, in English or in Hindi (पहला, दूसरा, तीसरा). From fourth onwards the pattern becomes regular: four becomes fourth, and चार becomes चौथा, then पाँचवाँ, छठा, सातवाँ. That is why children learn the first three as separate words, and why the game starts with just three racers.

When do children learn ordinal numbers?

India's NCF for the Foundational Stage lists "ordinal position" in the 5-6 year column, next to counting to 20. The US Head Start framework expects children to use ordinals "first to tenth" by about age 5, and UK Reception and US kindergarten introduce them in the same year. In practice:

  • At 3-4, "first" and "last" come naturally from turn-taking: "You go first."
  • At 4-5 (LKG), children learn first, second and third. The game shows three racers, or four at the 4-5 setting.
  • At 5-6 (UKG and Class 1), children use first to fifth and start reading 1st, 2nd, 3rd. The game shows five racers. First to tenth usually comes in Class 1.

How to play the animal race game

Each round starts with the animals lined up in their lanes. They run to the chequered finish line, each at its own speed, and stop in order. Then the question comes: "Who came first?", "Who came second?" or "Who came third?" Your child taps an animal. After the answer, badges 1, 2 and 3 appear next to the winners, and the voice says the full sentence, such as "The turtle came first" (yes, sometimes the turtle wins).

A wrong tap is never called wrong. First your child hears which place that animal came, then the right animal glows, then Golu points to it. After four to eight rounds, depending on the age in Settings, a marble rolls into the Goli Jar and a small mission appears for real life. Press 🔊 to hear the question again. The +A button in the header lets you hear Hindi first, English first, or only one language.

Say "Let's look at the flag" before your child answers. Finding the finish line first is the real skill: first means closest to the flag, not the biggest animal or the one on top.

How to teach ordinal numbers at home

Five to ten minutes a day is enough. Use the game to introduce the words, then use real life, where ordinal numbers are everywhere.

  • Toy race. Line up three toy cars or soft toys and "race" them across the floor. Ask "Who came first? Who came third?" Then let your child be the race announcer.
  • Queue talk. In a queue at the ration shop, temple or school gate, say "We are third in the line."
  • Getting dressed. "First socks, second shoes." Sequencing daily tasks builds the idea of order.
  • Stairs and floors. In a building, count floors: "We live on the second floor." In lifts, show the 1, 2, 3 buttons.
  • Train of fruits. Put a banana, an apple and a mango in a row. "Which fruit is second?" Then swap them.
  • Sports day. School races and cricket matches give first, second and third places. Talk about medals and positions.

One common muddle: children count "one, two, three" when asked "which is third?" and point at all three. Gently say "Third is just one animal. Show me the third one." Using a finger to walk from the flag also helps.

Ordinal numbers 1 to 10: the full list

For older children and Class 1 worksheets, here are the ordinal numbers 1 to 10 with short forms: first (1st), second (2nd), third (3rd), fourth (4th), fifth (5th), sixth (6th), seventh (7th), eighth (8th), ninth (9th) and tenth (10th). The last two letters of the short form come from the word: first, second, third, fourth. In Hindi they go पहला, दूसरा, तीसरा, चौथा, पाँचवाँ, छठा, सातवाँ, आठवाँ, नौवाँ, दसवाँ. Watch the spelling of eighth, ninth and fifth, which older children often get wrong.

There is no ordinal numbers PDF, but you can print this page from your browser; the table and list above work as an ordinal numbers chart. For a quick worksheet, draw five balloons in a row with a child at one end and ask your child to colour the third balloon red and the fifth one blue.

Gentle help for every child

Praise careful looking ("you checked the flag first"), not speed. If your child is frustrated, turn the number of racers down with the age setting, or play only "Who came first?" for a day. Children with autism often like the predictable race and repeated sentence; you can pause and name each animal before the race starts. For speech delay, let your child tap and hold up fingers first; the words come later. In bilingual homes, both दूसरा and "second" are right. If you are worried about your child's development, talk to your paediatrician. For children under two, real toys and your voice are much better than a screen.

Next, try before and after numbers, which also builds number order, and counting 1 to 10 or Hindi ginti. The animals name page teaches the racers' names, and greater than and less than is a good next step in comparing numbers.

How to use this page at home

Say it, then find it

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: ordinal numbers for kids on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.

Ten minutes is enough

Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.

Use both languages

Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.

Ordinal Numbers for Kids: questions parents ask
