Long and short for kids is one of the first maths ideas a child meets, long before numbers. "My pencil is longer than yours!" "Papa is taller than me." "This bag is too heavy." Children compare all day. This page turns those comparisons into four short games: two pencils side by side, two giraffes or trees on one ground line, a seesaw with an elephant and a mouse, and two water jugs. Your child taps the one that is longer, taller, heavier or holds more, and hears the answer in Hindi and English, such as यह पेंसिल लंबी है. It is free, needs no sign-up and works in any browser.
What your child learns: long, tall, heavy and holds more
Teachers call this "measurement" or "comparison", and it is part of every early-years curriculum. India's NIPUN Bharat goals for Balvatika (age 5-6) ask children to use comparison words such as longer, taller, shorter, heavier than and lighter than. The UK Reception year, US kindergarten and Singapore's kindergarten guide say much the same. The four ideas on this page are:
- Length: long and short. Which pencil is longer? In Hindi, लंबा (lamba) and छोटा (chhota).
- Height: tall and short. Which giraffe, tree, house or plant is taller? In Hindi, ऊँचा (ooncha) for tall things like trees and buildings.
- Weight: heavy and light. Which side of the seesaw goes down? In Hindi, भारी (bhaari) and हल्का (halka).
- Capacity: holds more and holds less. Which jug holds more water? In Hindi, ज़्यादा (zyaada) and कम (kam).
Notice that "short" does two jobs in English: a short pencil and a short person. Hindi uses छोटा for both too, so bilingual children usually find this easy. The trickier word is "tall", because children often say "big" for everything. Hearing "taller" again and again in the game helps them pick the exact word.
How to play the long and short game
Choose a tab at the top of the game. Each round asks one question, and your child answers by tapping a picture.
Long: "Which pencil is longer?"
Two pencils start from the same line, one above the other. Starting from one line matters: it is the fair way to compare length, and children learn it by seeing it. At ages 4-6 the game sometimes asks "Which pencil is shorter?" instead, so your child has to listen, not just tap the bigger one.
Tall: "Which one is taller?"
Two giraffes, trees, houses or plants stand on one ground line at different heights. Your child taps the taller one, or the shorter one when asked.
Heavy: "Look at the seesaw. Which one is heavier?"
An elephant and a mouse, a rock and a feather, a watermelon and a strawberry, a bear and an ant, or a horse and a rabbit sit on a seesaw. The heavy side goes down. Your child looks at the tilt and taps the heavier one (or the lighter one for older children). This is a lovely first lesson in using evidence: "How do you know? Because that side went down!"
Holds more: "Which jug holds more water?"
Two water jugs of different sizes appear. Your child taps the one that holds more, or less, water. This is the first step towards "capacity", which Class 1 books cover with cups and spoons.
Wrong taps are never called wrong. First your child hears the name of what they tapped, then the right picture glows, then Golu points to it. After four to eight rounds, depending on the age set in Settings, a marble rolls into the Goli Jar and a small real-world mission appears. The अ+A button in the header switches between Hindi first, English first, or one language only, and the 🔊 button replays the question.
Teaching long and short by age: a simple plan

Five to ten minutes a day is plenty. Play one tab, then go and compare real things. Sit with your child and talk about each answer. For children under two, real objects and your voice are much better than any screen.
Long and short activities at home, in the kitchen and at the park
The game shows the idea; real objects make it stick. Here are easy long and short activities for kids that need nothing special:
- Kitchen line-up. Put a big spoon and a small spoon on the table with their ends touching one edge. "Which spoon is longer?" Then try a rolling pin (बेलन) and a spoon.
- Heavy and light objects. Let your child hold a potato in one hand and a leaf in the other. "Which one is heavy?" Then try a water bottle and a pillow. Children are often surprised that big is not always heavy: a big pillow is light, and a small stone can be heavy.
- Tall and short family. Stand in a line, from tallest to shortest. Stick a paper strip on the wall at your child's height every few months.
- Water play. At bath time, fill a mug and pour it into a bucket. "Which one holds more water?" Try a glass and a लोटा.
- Park seesaw. Sit on a real seesaw with your child. Ask why your side goes down. This is the Heavy tab in real life.
- Hand span measurement. For 5-6 year olds: "How many hand spans long is your bed?" This non-standard measurement is exactly what Class 1 begins with.
Long and short in Hindi: the words to use

For a tall person, Hindi speakers usually say लंबा, and for a tall building or tree ऊँचा. Both are fine; use what you say at home.

For a quick tall and short worksheet, draw two trees of different heights on paper and ask your child to colour the taller one green. For heavy and light, draw a seesaw and let your child draw an elephant on the side that is down.
When comparing feels hard: gentle tips
Some children answer "big" to every question. That is normal. Praise the looking ("you checked both pencils"), not being fast. If your child is frustrated, switch to the Heavy tab, where the seesaw gives a clear clue, or turn on fewer choices in Settings. Children with autism often enjoy the steady layout and the same voice each time; start with one tab and one word. For speech delay, let your child point first and say the word later, and model the word yourself: "Yes, longer!" In bilingual homes, use the अ+A button so the question comes in the language your child hears most. If you are worried about your child's development, talk to your paediatrician.
When your child is ready, the big and small game is a gentle warm-up, and opposite words for kids adds more pairs like hot and cold. For numbers, try greater than and less than, ordinal numbers (first, second, third) and counting 1 to 10.
