Subitizing (also spelled subitising) is the ability to see how many things there are without counting them. When you glance at a dice and just know it shows five, you are subitizing. Young children can learn to do this for small numbers, and it is one of the strongest early signs of healthy number sense. The subitizing games above flash a pattern for two seconds: a dice face, a ten-frame or a scatter of dots. Then a cloud covers it and Golu asks, "How many dots?" Your child picks a number. If they need another look, the Peek button shows the pattern for two more seconds.
What is subitizing?
The word comes from the Latin for "sudden". Researchers describe two kinds:
- Perceptual subitizing: instantly seeing 1, 2 or 3 (and later 4 or 5) without any counting. Even babies show a rough sense of this.
- Conceptual subitizing: seeing a bigger number as parts you know. Eight on a ten-frame is "a full row of five and three more". This is where subitizing meets addition and number bonds.
In Hindi you could call it बिना गिने पहचानना (recognising without counting).
Why it matters
Children who subitize well stop counting everything from one. They can count on from a group they already see ("five… six, seven"), they compare quantities quickly, and they find adding small numbers easier. Researchers in the UK, US and Australia now include subitizing in early years maths for exactly this reason. It is also a calm, quick game that fits into a spare minute.
How to use this page
- Dice: the familiar dice faces. Age 2-3 sees 1 to 3, age 3-4 sees 1 to 5, and older children see 1 to 6.
- Ten-frame: red counters in two rows of five, up to 10 (up to 5 for age 2-3). This builds conceptual subitizing.
- Dots: loosely scattered dots, 1 to 5 (1 to 3 for age 2-3). Random arrangements are harder than dice.
- The pattern shows for two seconds, then hides. Tap 👀 Peek to see it again for two seconds. There is no time limit to answer.
- Wrong answers get the usual gentle hint: Golu names the number, then the right card glows, then a 👆 appears. The pattern comes back after the right answer so your child can check.

Dice and dominoes
Ludo and snakes and ladders are subitizing practice in disguise. Encourage your child to say the number before touching the dots. A dice game every evening does more than any subitizing worksheet.
Flash cards from paper plates
Stick bindis or draw dots on paper plates in different patterns. Flash a plate, hide it behind your back, and ask how many. Then swap and let your child flash for you.
Fingers
Show fingers quickly and hide your hand. Fingers teach five as a unit, since one full hand is always five.
Quick look in daily life
"How many birds on the wire?" "How many rotis left?" Ask for a quick guess, then count to check. Guessing and checking is good maths.
After each answer, ask "How did you see it?" A child who says "three and three" or "a full row and two" is doing conceptual subitizing. Celebrate the explanation, not just the answer.
When it feels hard
If your child counts every dot, that is fine; they are still learning what the numbers look like. Use Peek as often as they like, and stay with small numbers. Children who wear glasses should have them on. If a child becomes frustrated, switch to Dice, which has the most familiar patterns. Praise effort: "You looked carefully!" For children with attention difficulties the two-second flash can be very motivating because it is short and clear. Keep sessions to a few minutes, play together, and follow up with a real dice game. Under-2s are better off with a grown-up counting toys out loud than with a screen.

Questions to ask while you play
After each round, ask your child to describe what they saw: "Was it like a dice? Was there a full row?" For the ten-frame, ask "How many empty boxes were there?" which links to making ten. With scattered dots, ask whether they saw a group of two and a group of three. You can also turn the game around: let your child flash a pattern with real buttons for you to name, then check your answer by counting together. Children love catching a grown-up in a mistake, so make a silly one sometimes. Finally, ask which mode felt easiest and why. Dice patterns are usually easiest because they never change, while scattered dots take more careful looking.
