What is the solar system? A kid-friendly definition
The solar system is the Sun and everything that travels around it: eight planets, their moons, and smaller things like comets. For a preschooler, one sentence is enough: "The Sun is in the middle, and the planets go round and round it." Our Earth (पृथ्वी) is one of those planets, and it is our home. The Sun is a star, and it looks bigger than the night-time stars only because it is much closer to us.

Planets name big to small
By size, from biggest to smallest: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Earth, Venus, Mars, Mercury. Children aged 5-6 enjoy comparing: "Jupiter is so big that more than a thousand Earths could fit inside it."
How to learn planets name in order easily (a trick)
The most popular trick to learn the planets name in order in English is a silly sentence where each word starts with the first letter of a planet:

For a Hindi trick (planet name yaad karne ki trick), many families use the weekday link: बुध is in बुधवार (Wednesday), मंगल in मंगलवार, शुक्र in शुक्रवार, शनि in शनिवार, and बृहस्पति is गुरु, as in गुरुवार. See our days of the week page. Other easy ways to learn planets name:
- Line up and count: give eight toys the planet names and line them up from a lamp (the Sun). Count 1 to 8 together, which is also good counting 1 to 10 practice.
- Clap the names: Mer-cu-ry (3 claps), Earth (1 clap). Rhythm helps memory.
- A planet song: sing the eight names to a tune your child knows, like "Twinkle, twinkle".
How to use the games
- Listen: tap any picture to hear the name in Hindi and English with a fun fact.
- Find it: Golu asks "Where is the Moon?" and your child chooses from two to four pictures, depending on the age set in Settings.
- Memory: find pairs of space cards.

What to teach at each age
- How to teach the solar system to toddlers (2-3): Sun in the day, Moon and stars at night. Nothing more. Point to the real sky.

Solar system for kids project and easy drawing
A school project does not need to cost much. Try one of these:
- Easy drawing: draw a big yellow Sun on the left edge of the paper, then eight circles in a row of different sizes. Colour Mars red, Earth blue and green, and add rings to Saturn. Label each one with its name. Our colours in Hindi and English and shapes name pages fit right in.
- Clay model: roll eight clay balls, big and small, and stick them on a cardboard sheet with the Sun.
- Newspaper planets: crumple paper into balls, cover with paint and hang them on a thread.
- Night sky chart: for a week, draw the Moon's shape each night. Children are amazed to see it change.
Solar system fun facts and Indian context
- India has sent missions to the Moon (Chandrayaan) and to Mars (Mangalyaan), built by ISRO. Chandrayaan-3 landed near the Moon's south pole in 2023.
- Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian to travel to space, in 1984.
- Many Indian festivals follow the Moon: Karva Chauth, Eid and Diwali (on a new-moon night) are a few examples.
- The Moon has no light of its own; it shines with the Sun's light.
- The Earth takes one year to go round the Sun. That journey, and the tilt of the Earth, gives us the seasons.

Gentle tips for every child
Space can feel huge and a little scary to some children, especially "the dark". Keep it cosy: look at the Moon from a lap or a balcony. Praise curiosity: "What a great question!" is worth more than a right answer. If your child mixes up the order, laugh with them and sing the trick again. For children with speech delay, point-and-name games work well, and short names like Sun, Moon and Mars are good first words. Autistic children who love facts may enjoy learning all eight in order quickly; follow their lead. If you are worried about development, talk to your paediatrician.
Screen time: short, shared sessions of about 10 minutes are best. For children under two, the real Moon in the real sky, with you beside them, is the best lesson.
