Every day your child meets people who make life work: the doctor, the teacher, the milkman, the guard at the gate, the lady who sweeps the street. Learning about community helpers for kids is really learning about kindness and about how a neighbourhood fits together. This page shows 18 helpers with a picture, their name in Hindi and English and one simple line about what they do.

What are community helpers? (community helpers kya hota hai)

Community helpers are people whose work helps everyone around us. You can tell a three-year-old: "Helpers are people who do a job to help us. The doctor helps us get well. The farmer grows our food." A profession or occupation name is simply the word for someone's job. For class 1 and class 2, you can add that people learn special skills and use special tools for their work.

The 18 cards are: doctor (डॉक्टर), nurse (नर्स), dentist (दाँतों के डॉक्टर), teacher (शिक्षक), farmer (किसान), police officer (पुलिस), firefighter (दमकलकर्मी), postal worker (डाकिया), cobbler (मोची), tailor (दर्ज़ी), cook (रसोइया), driver, pilot, carpenter (बढ़ई), barber (नाई), electrician (बिजली मिस्त्री), sanitation worker (सफ़ाई कर्मचारी) and potter (कुम्हार). The word list above has all of them with pronunciation and 🔊 buttons, so it doubles as a community helpers chart you can print from your browser.

The pictures show men and women of different skin tones, because any person can do any job. Say this out loud when you play: "A pilot can be a woman. A nurse can be a man."

How to use the games

  • Listen: tap a helper to hear the name in both languages and a short fact, such as "A cobbler mends shoes."
  • Find it: Golu asks "Where is the farmer?" and your child picks from two to four pictures, based on the age set in Settings.
  • Memory: find matching pairs of helpers.

No game ever says "wrong". A mistaken tap first hears the name of the helper tapped, then sees the right card glow, then Golu points. Each game ends with a marble dropping into the Goli Jar, and tapping the jar counts the marbles aloud. The अ+A button picks the language order, and Settings has calm motion, calm sound, captions and fewer choices.

Community helpers and their tools

Linking each helper to a tool and a place is the classic next step for LKG, UKG and class 1. Use this table as a talking game: "Who uses scissors and a measuring tape?"

HelperToolsWhere they workHow they help
DoctorStethoscopeClinic, hospitalHelps us get well
DentistSmall mirror, chairDental clinicKeeps teeth healthy
FarmerPlough, tractor, seedsFieldGrows our food
FirefighterHose, helmet, fire engineFire stationPuts out fires

TailorNeedle, thread, scissors, tapeShopStitches clothes
CarpenterHammer, sawWorkshopMakes tables and doors
PotterWheel, clayPottery shedMakes pots and diyas
Sanitation workerBroom, bin, garbage vanStreetsKeeps the area clean

The uniform is another clue. Police officers, nurses, pilots and firefighters wear special clothes so we can recognise them quickly, which is useful for safety. Our page on safety rules for kids explains who to ask for help if your child is lost.

What to teach at each age

  • Community helpers for toddlers (2-3): just a few people your child already knows: doctor, teacher, driver, cook. Say "doctor" when you visit the clinic.
  • Nursery (3-4): 10 helpers, and one thing each one does. Pretend play works best at this age.
  • LKG (4-5): about 15 helpers, their tools and their places. Play "Who am I?" riddles.
  • UKG and class 1 (5-6): all 18 names, duties and responsibilities in simple words, and a short talk such as "community helpers for kids 5 lines".

How to teach community helpers to preschoolers in 5-10 minutes

  1. Neighbourhood walk: spot the sweeper, the guard, the vegetable seller and the auto driver. Wave and say thank you together.
  2. Pretend clinic or shop: a spoon becomes a stethoscope, a dupatta becomes a tailor's cloth. Use real household items as props.
  3. Who am I?: "I grow rice and wheat. Who am I?" (farmer). Your child then makes up a riddle for you.
  4. Vehicle link: match helpers to their vehicles, such as the firefighter and the fire engine. Our vehicles name page has the ambulance, police car and tractor.
  5. Drawing: draw one helper with one tool, like a doctor with a stethoscope. That is a complete community helpers drawing for kids.

Fancy dress: for a school fancy dress day, simple costumes work well. A white shirt and toy stethoscope makes a doctor; a towel turban and a small basket of vegetables makes a farmer. Help your child practise one line, like "I am a farmer. I grow our food."

Professions name in Hindi and English for students

Older children and school students often need a list of professions names in English with the Hindi word beside it. The word list above gives 18 professions name with pictures, which is a good first set of 10 to 20 jobs for nursery to class 2. Some Hindi words are the same as English (doctor, nurse, driver, pilot), and some are very different (बढ़ई for carpenter, दर्ज़ी for tailor). Point this out: it helps bilingual children see that some words are borrowed and some are our own.

Many family names come from professions too. In English, Smith, Baker and Taylor are names that are professions, and in India some surnames grew from old jobs in the same way. Older children find this a fun fact to share.

Community helpers project and activity ideas for school

  • Community helpers chart ideas: make a big chart with a house in the middle and helpers around it. Stick on drawings or cut-out images with names in both languages.
  • Easy drawing: a community helpers drawing easy enough for a four-year-old is a circle face, a stick body and one clear tool, like a broom or a hammer.
  • Fancy dress competition: for community helpers fancy dress for kids, girls and boys can choose any helper. A girl pilot or firefighter is a lovely choice.
  • Songs and rhymes: sing "Who are the people in your neighbourhood?" or make a simple rhyme: "Doctor, doctor, make me well; teacher, teacher, help me spell."
  • Games for preschool and kindergarten: the Find it game here is a quick community helpers activity for kids in school, played on the class screen with children taking turns.
  • Worksheet for UKG: print the word list and ask children to draw a line from each helper to a tool you draw beside it.

Helpers in an Indian neighbourhood

Indian children meet helpers that many picture books leave out: the मोची (cobbler) at the corner, the कुम्हार (potter) who makes diyas before Diwali, the डाकिया (postman) on his cycle, and the नाई (barber). These are real professions name list in India, and children feel proud to see them. Around the world, the doctor, teacher, firefighter and police officer appear everywhere, so these words travel well for families abroad.

Kindness, respect and every child

The biggest lesson here is respect. Teach your child to greet helpers, say please and thank you and never call any job "small". Our good manners for kids page builds this further. Some children fear doctors or loud fire engines; playing with the cards before a clinic visit can calm those nerves. For a child with speech delay, pointing to a picture is real communication, so say the word back warmly. Autistic children often enjoy the predictable Listen mode and the calm sound setting. In a bilingual home, set the अ+A button to your home language first. If you have any worries about development, talk to your paediatrician.

Screen time: play together for about 10 minutes, then go and meet a real helper. For children under two, real people and real conversation are far better than a screen.

Next, meet the people at home on our family members name page.

How to use this page at home

Say it, then find it

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: community helpers on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.

Ten minutes is enough

Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.

Use both languages

Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
