Getting dressed happens every single day, which makes clothes one of the easiest word groups to practise. This page teaches 20 clothes name in English and Hindi with pictures: everyday wear like कमीज़ (kameez, shirt), फ्रॉक (frock) and निक्कर (nikkar, shorts), Indian clothes like साड़ी (saree), कुर्ता (kurta) and धोती (dhoti), and things for rain and cold like बरसाती (barsaati, raincoat) and दस्ताने (dastaane, gloves). Every picture speaks both names in clear audio.

What is "clothes name" (clothes name kya hota hai)?

When a teacher asks for clothes names, she means the words for the things we wear: कपड़े (kapde) in Hindi. For young children the topic usually includes shoes, socks, caps and bags too, because they are all part of getting ready. This page's set has 20 items, which covers the 5, 10, 15 or 20 clothes most nursery, UKG and class 1 lists ask for.

What your child learns, age by age

AgeWhat is realisticStart with
2-3Names 5 things they wear; helps pull off socks and slippersShirt, shorts, socks, shoes, cap
3-4 (nursery)About 10 names; chooses between two outfitsAdd frock, pants, slippers, sweater, umbrella
4-5 (LKG)Names 15; matches clothes to the weatherAdd raincoat, scarf, gloves, kurta, school bag
5-6 (UKG, class 1)All 20 in both languages; dresses mostly alone; reads simple wordsAdd saree, dhoti, salwar kameez, boots, spectacles

How to play the clothes name game

  • Listen (सुनो): tap any item to hear its name and a short line like "A sweater keeps us warm."
  • Find it (ढूँढो): Golu asks for one item from 2-4 big pictures. Nothing is ever called wrong: your child hears the name of what they tapped, the right picture glows, then Golu points.
  • Memory (जोड़ी): turn cards to find pairs, a good clothes game for kids of 4-6.

Use the अ+A button for Hindi then English, English then Hindi, or one language only. Every finished round drops a marble into the Goli Jar, and you can tap the jar to count them together. Settings, behind a grown-up check, let you set your child's age and turn on calm motion, calm sound, captions, fewer choices or high contrast.

Clothes name according to season

Sorting clothes by weather is a favourite school activity, and India's seasons make it easy to explain. This chart uses the items in the game.

Every dayShirt / कमीज़, shoes / जूते, school bag / बस्ता, spectacles / चश्मा if you need them

Ask your child each morning, "Is it hot, rainy or cold today? What should we wear?" It links to seasons for kids and builds real thinking, not just naming.

Clothes for boys and girls, and Indian clothes

School lists often split clothes names for boys (shirt, shorts, kurta, dhoti) and for girls (frock, saree, salwar kameez). It is fine to teach both lists to every child; many kids wear kurtas, and every child sees Mummy's saree and Papa's pants. Talk about who in the family wears what: "Nani wears a saree. Dada wears a dhoti on puja days." Festivals are a lovely time for this: new clothes at Diwali, Eid and Christmas, a kurta for a wedding, and a lehenga or salwar kameez at a family function. Families abroad can add jeans, a jacket and a hoodie to the same conversation.

How to teach clothes names at home in 5-10 minutes

  1. Dressing commentary. Name each item as your child puts it on: "First the कमीज़, the shirt. Now the socks." Repetition every morning does the work.
  2. Laundry sort. Let your child sort clean clothes into piles: all socks, all shirts. Pair socks together; it is a real matching game.
  3. Dress the teddy. Use a doll or teddy and old baby clothes. "Teddy is cold. What does he need?"
  4. Packing game. Before a trip to Nani's house, let your child name and pack five clothes.
  5. Silly dressing. Put socks on your hands and ask, "Is this right?" Children laugh and correct you with the right word.

Self-dressing is a real skill for 3-5 year olds. Choose easy clothes (elastic waists, slip-on chappals) so your child can say the word and put it on without help. Pair this page with body parts name: we wear socks on our feet, gloves on our hands and a cap on our head.

What do toddlers wear?

For a 2-3 year old, simple and comfortable is best: cotton shirts or frocks, shorts or soft pants, socks, and shoes or chappals that are easy to put on. Fewer fastenings mean more chances for your toddler to try dressing alone, and more chances to say the words.

There is no separate PDF. The word list above is a clothes name chart in Hindi and English with a picture, spelling and pronunciation for each item, and it prints from your browser (Print, then paper or "Save as PDF"). For a worksheet, fold the printout to hide the words and ask your child to name each picture. A 5-6 year old can write and learn five clothes names, starting with easy ones like "cap" or टोपी, or draw their favourite outfit and label it.

Keeping it gentle

Praise effort ("You found the raincoat so fast!"), not correctness. If Find it gets frustrating, go back to Listen or turn on fewer choices. Children with speech delay can answer by pointing or holding up the real sock or cap. Some autistic children and children with sensory sensitivities find certain fabrics, tags or shoes uncomfortable; respect that, and let them choose what feels good. In bilingual homes, use your strongest language while dressing and let the game add the other. Keep screen time to about 5-10 minutes with you beside them. For under-2s, naming clothes while you dress them teaches far more than any screen.

Next, explore household items name or colours in Hindi and English ("Which colour shirt today?").

How to use this page at home

Say it, then find it

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: clothes name on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.

Ten minutes is enough

Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.

Use both languages

Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
