A pictograph for kids is simply a graph made of pictures. Instead of bars or numbers, each fruit, toy or animal is drawn once, lined up in rows, so a child can see at a glance which row is longest. This page lets your child build one. A basket holds a mix of fruits; your child taps each fruit and it jumps into its own row on the picture graph while the game counts aloud. Then Golu asks "Which fruit has the most?" It is early data handling for children aged 4 to 6, spoken in Hindi and English, and it is free.

What is a pictograph? (and why it matters)

A pictograph, also called a picture graph, shows information using pictures. In Hindi schools it is sometimes called चित्रालेख. Every picture stands for one thing, and pictures of the same kind sit in one row. The row with the most pictures is the biggest group.

Making a pictograph brings together skills your child already has:

  • Sorting: putting apples with apples and bananas with bananas.
  • Counting: how many are in each row.
  • Comparing: which row has the most, which has the fewest (सबसे ज़्यादा, सबसे कम).

This is the heart of data handling, and it is taught in India in class 1 and class 2, in UK Year 1 and 2, and in US kindergarten and grade 1. The Indian foundational stage also lists picture graphs for 5 to 6 year olds. Children in UKG are ready for a simple version like this one, where each picture stands for one fruit and there is no key to read.

How to play the fruit pictograph game

Fill the picture graph

A basket appears with a mix of three kinds of fruit (four kinds at ages 4 to 6). The fruits come from apple, banana, mango, strawberry, orange, pear and grapes, with between one and five of each. Golu says "Tap each fruit to put it on the picture graph." Each tap sends the fruit to its row and the voice counts: "one, two, three". Your child does not have to sort in order; the graph does the sorting, so they can watch the rows grow.

Answer the question

When the basket is empty, Golu asks "Which fruit has the most?" Your child taps the longest row. At ages 4 to 6 there is also a second question, "Which fruit has the fewest?" The answer is said in a full sentence, for example "We have the most bananas." Hearing the sentence helps children learn to talk about data, not just point at it.

Three graphs, then a marble

Each game has three graphs with new fruits. There is never a "wrong": a tap on another row gets a gentle hint, then the right row glows, then Golu points. The 🔊 button replays the question. After the third graph a marble rolls into the Goli Jar and the end card suggests a real-world mission. The +A button switches between Hindi and English order.

Five to ten minutes on the screen is plenty. The real learning happens when your child builds a graph with real objects afterwards. Sit together and talk; for under-twos, sorting real things with you is far better than a screen.

How to make a pictograph at home

Here is a simple way to make a pictograph with a five-year-old in ten minutes:

  1. Ask a question. "Which fruit do we have most of in the kitchen?" or "What colour are our shoes?"
  2. Collect the things. Bring the fruit or the shoes to the floor.
  3. Sort them into lines. One line for each kind, starting from the same edge, like the rows in the game. Starting from the same edge matters, or a long line of small grapes can look bigger than it is.
  4. Count each line and say the numbers aloud.
  5. Talk about it. Which has the most? The fewest? Are any the same?
  6. Draw it. Older children can draw one small circle for each fruit on squared paper and write a title.

Pictograph ideas for kids in India and around the world

  • Fruit basket after the market. Mango season makes a very long mango row.
  • Festival sweets. Count laddoos, barfis and jalebis at Diwali, or the sweets at Eid or Christmas.
  • Weather week. Draw a sun, cloud or rain drop each day for a week, then see which weather came most.
  • Vehicles from the balcony. Count cars, scooters and autos that pass in five minutes.
  • Class survey. Teachers can ask each child to stick a picture of their favourite fruit on a chart. This is a classic class 1 pictograph activity.

How to read a pictograph: questions to ask

Asking good questions turns a pretty picture into maths. Start with "Which has the most?" and "Which has the fewest?" Then try "How many apples are there?" (counting), "Are there more mangoes or more pears?" (comparing, as in greater than and less than), and for older children "How many fruits are there altogether?" or "How many more bananas than apples?" Later, in class 2 and 3, children meet a key, where one picture might stand for 2 or 5 things. Leave that for later; at this age, one picture should always mean one thing.

Pictograph, tally marks and bar graphs

A pictograph is the friendliest graph because children can see and count every object. Tally marks (lines grouped in fives) and bar graphs come later, often in class 2 and 3. A bar graph is really a pictograph where the pictures have been joined into one bar. If you show your child both, point out that the longest row and the tallest bar tell the same story.

Tips for every child

Some children love sorting and find this game calming; others want to rush. Let your child tap at their own pace, and praise what they did ("you put every fruit in its row"). For children with autism, sorting is often a strength, so this can be a confident activity. For children with speech delay, tapping the row is the answer; you can say the sentence for them.
