What is weather, and what is a season?

What is weather for kids? Weather is what the sky and air are like today: hot or cold, sunny or rainy, windy or still. It can change in a single afternoon. What is seasons for kids? A season is a long stretch of the year with the same kind of weather, lasting a few months, like the hot summer or the rainy monsoon. A simple way to say it to a four-year-old: "Weather is today. A season is many weeks."

Weather words and seasons on this page

How many seasons? India's six ritu with months

Many English books teach four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. The traditional Indian calendar has six seasons, each about two months long, and that is what this page teaches. The Hindi months come from the Hindu calendar, so the English months are approximate.

For everyday talk, most Indian families use three big seasons: summer (गर्मी), rainy season (बरसात) and winter (सर्दी). It is fine to start there with a toddler and add the six ritu at age 5-6. Weather also differs by place: Chennai hardly gets cold, while Shimla may get snow.

Families abroad can link the same idea to their own four seasons for kids: spring, summer, autumn (fall) and winter. In Australia the seasons are the other way round, so Christmas comes in summer. Our months of the year page helps connect seasons to the calendar.

Season questions children ask

• What is summer season for kids? The hottest time of year, when we drink more water, wear cotton clothes and enjoy mangoes.
• What is monsoon season for kids? The rainy season, when big clouds bring lots of rain. What is rainy season for kids in one line? "The time when it rains almost every day."
• What is winter season for kids? The coldest time, when we wear sweaters and the mornings can be foggy.
• What is spring season for kids? The time of new leaves and flowers, when it is neither too hot nor too cold.
• What is autumn season for kids? The time after the rain, when the sky is clear and, in cold countries, leaves turn orange and fall.

How to use the games

• Listen: tap any picture to hear the word in Hindi and English, plus its fact.
• Find it: Golu asks "Where is the rainbow?" and your child taps it from two to four choices, set by the age in Settings.
• Memory: match pairs of weather cards.

The games never say "wrong". After a mistaken tap your child hears what they tapped, then the right card glows, then Golu points. The अ+A button chooses Hindi first, English first, Hindi only or English only. If thunder sounds or motion bother your child, switch on calm sound or calm motion in Settings.

How to teach seasons to preschoolers in 5-10 minutes a day

1. Morning weather check: open the window and ask "What is the weather for kids today, sunny or cloudy?" Keep a simple weather chart for kids on the fridge: draw a sun, a cloud or rain drops each day for a week, then count them.
2. Dress for the weather: "It's cold, what should we wear?" Link to clothes names in Hindi and English: sweater, raincoat, cap.
3. Seasonal fruit: mangoes in summer, oranges and guavas in winter. Our fruits name page has them.
4. Rain play: float paper boats in a puddle during the monsoon. Talk about where the rain comes from, and follow it on the water cycle for kids page.
5. Drawing: fold a paper into four or six boxes and draw one season in each. That is a lovely seasons for kids project for LKG or UKG.

Make a weather song: "Sun, sun, come and play; rain, rain, come another day." Change the words for wind and fog. Seasons rhymes for kids help children who remember tunes better than lists.

Weather and seasons worksheets, charts and activities

Teachers and parents often look for a weather worksheet or a seasons chart in Hindi. Here is what works with this site, without any download.

• Weather chart worksheet: print the word list, cut out the weather pictures and let your child glue one each day on a calendar. This weather chart activity builds counting as well as vocabulary.
• Seasons chart drawing: draw a big circle, split it into six slices and draw one picture for each ritu, with the Hindi name in each slice. For four seasons drawing, split it into four.
• Seasons pictures with names: the cards in the game are ready-made images; point and ask your child to say the name before you tap it.
• Weather vocabulary game: call out a word and your child acts it: shiver for snow, blow for wind, hide for thunder. It is a fun way to learn vocabulary in English and Hindi together.
• Seasons games for kindergarten: play Find it on the class screen, with children taking turns and the rest calling the Hindi name.
• Seasons topic in English for class 1: five simple lines, such as "There are six seasons in India. Summer is hot. In the monsoon it rains. Winter is cold. I like spring."

These weather activities online and offline help children understand types of seasons through play, not memorising. A weather learning routine of two minutes a day beats one long lesson a month.

What to learn at each age

• Age 2-3: hot and cold, sun and rain. Feel real things: warm sunlight, a cold glass, rain on the hand.
• Age 3-4 (nursery): the ten weather words and three everyday seasons. Play Find it.
• Age 4-5 (LKG): match clothes and food to seasons; keep a weekly weather chart.
• Age 5-6 (UKG, class 1): the six ritu with their order, and simple ideas like "clouds are made of tiny water drops".

Weather safety and big feelings

Many young children fear thunder. Name the feeling ("That was loud! You felt scared") and explain simply: "Lightning flashes first, then thunder booms. We are safe inside." In a storm, stay indoors. In summer, wear a cap and drink water; in fog, hold hands near the road. Praise your child for noticing the weather, not just for knowing the word. For a child with speech delay, gestures like shivering for cold or wiping the brow for hot count as communication. If you are worried, talk to your paediatrician.

Screen time: play together for about 10 minutes and then look at the real sky. For under-twos, going outside with a grown-up teaches weather far better than any screen.
