Animals name in Indonesian is one of the first topics children meet in PAUD, where Binatang (animals) is an official learning theme. This page has 60 animals with pictures and clear audio: farm animals like sapi (cow) and kambing (goat), pets like kucing (cat) and kelinci (rabbit), wild animals such as gajah (elephant) and harimau (tiger), and sea animals from ikan (fish) to kuda laut (seahorse). Tap a picture to hear it in Indonesian and English.

Farm animals and pets in Indonesian

Start with animals your child can see in a village, a farm visit or a picture book: sapi (cow), kerbau (water buffalo), kambing (goat), domba (sheep), kuda (horse) and keledai (donkey). Pets (hewan peliharaan) come next: kucing, kelinci, hamster and ikan mas koki (goldfish). The list also includes the pig (babi) and the dog (anjing); many Muslim families prefer to focus on other animals first, and you can simply skip any card you like.

Wild animals, including Indonesia's own

Indonesia is home to some of the world's most famous animals, and children love hearing that. Orang utan literally means "person of the forest" (orang = person, hutan = forest), and English borrowed the word. The Sumatran tiger is a harimau, and the badak (rhino) lives in Java and Sumatra. Other wild animals here include singa (lion), beruang (bear), monyet (monkey), rusa (deer), jerapah (giraffe) and kelelawar (bat). The Komodo dragon is not in the game, but it makes a great talking point: it lives only on a few Indonesian islands.

Animal names that are fun to take apart

Many Indonesian animal names are made from two simple words, which helps children remember them:

IndonesianLiterallyEnglish
kuda nilNile horsehippo
kuda lautsea horseseahorse
bintang lautsea starstarfish
anjing lautsea dogseal
beruang kutubpole bearpolar bear
babi hutanforest pigwild boar

Notice that doubling a word is normal in Indonesian: lumba-lumba (dolphin), cumi-cumi (squid), ubur-ubur (jellyfish), berang-berang (otter). Toddlers enjoy saying them.

Animal sounds in Indonesian

Animals "speak" a little differently in Indonesian. A rooster says kukuruyuk, a cat meong, a dog guk guk, a cow mooo, a goat embek and a duck kwek kwek. Make the sound, let your child guess the animal, then find it in the game. For English sounds, try our animal sounds game.

How to teach animal names in Indonesian

  1. Five a day. Choose five animals in Listen mode and say each one together.
  2. Find it. When they feel familiar, let Golu ask "Mana kucing?"-style questions. A wrong tap gets a hint, never a "wrong".
  3. Toy sort. Sort toy animals into hewan darat (land) and hewan laut (sea).
  4. Zoo or farm trip. At Ragunan, Taman Safari or any local zoo, name every animal you see.
  5. Letter link. Many animals appear on the Indonesian alphabet: G gajah, K kucing, U ular.

At 2-3, aim for 5-10 animals and lots of sounds. At 3-4, 15-20 animals and sorting. At 4-6, short sentences such as "Gajah itu besar" (the elephant is big). Praise every try.

For the same animals in English and Hindi, see animals name for kids. Malay-speaking relatives can compare the animals in Malay page, where the cow is lembu instead of sapi.

Animal words for families abroad

Animals are a perfect topic for keeping Indonesian alive outside Indonesia, because children are curious about them in any country. Name the ducks in the park, the dogs on your street and the animals in your child's English picture books in Indonesian. Tell stories about Indonesia's special animals, the orang utan of Borneo and Sumatra, the komodo and the cicak (little house gecko) that chirps on the walls at Nenek's house. Folk tales such as Si Kancil, the clever mouse deer, bring animal words into bedtime too.

How to use this page at home

Say it, then find it

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: indonesian words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.

Ten minutes is enough

Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.

Use both languages

Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.

Animals in Indonesian: questions parents ask

How many animals are on this page?
There are 60 animals: farm animals, pets, wild animals and sea animals. The full list with pictures and audio is in the word list above.
What are the first Indonesian animal names to teach?
Start with kucing (cat), ikan (fish), sapi (cow), kuda (horse), gajah (elephant) and monyet (monkey). Short words for animals your child already knows stick fastest.
What does orang utan mean?
Orang means person and hutan means forest, so orang utan is "person of the forest". English took the word from Malay and Indonesian.

Is there an Indonesian animals worksheet?
There is no PDF, but you can print this page from your browser. The word list prints cleanly for matching and colouring.
