Learn Indonesian for kids with short games that speak every word aloud. Bahasa Indonesia is one of the friendliest languages a young child can meet: it uses the same 26 Latin letters as English, words are read exactly as they are written, and there are no tones, no verb endings and no masculine or feminine nouns. Below you will find the alphabet, numbers 1 to 100, and picture words for animals, fruits, vegetables, colours and body parts, each with clear audio in Indonesian and English.
What your child learns in these Indonesian games
- Indonesian alphabet: huruf A to Z with a word for each, from A apel and B bola to Z zebra.
- Numbers in Indonesian: satu, dua, tiga up to seratus (100), with a "Count with me" button.
- Animal names in Indonesian: 60 animals, from kucing and sapi to orang utan.
- Fruits and vegetables: 30 of each, such as mangga, pisang, wortel and jagung.
- Colours and body parts: 12 colours (merah, kuning, biru) and 30 body words (kepala, mata, tangan).
Each game has three modes. Listen lets your child tap and hear. Find it has Golu ask for a picture in Indonesian. Memory is a pairs game. A wrong tap never says "wrong": the child hears what they tapped, then the right card glows. Every finished game drops a marble into the Goli Jar.
How young children learn to read in Indonesia
Most Indonesian children start in PAUD (Pendidikan Anak Usia Dini), first in a playgroup (KB, around ages 2-4) and then in TK A and TK B (kindergarten, ages 4-6). The national Kurikulum Merdeka calls its method bermain bermakna, meaningful play. Children sing, build with blocks in sentra (learning corners), and learn letters through games rather than drills. The government also stopped reading and counting tests (calistung) for primary school entry, so there is no rush.
When reading does begin, it follows the suku kata (syllable) method. Children learn the vowels a, i, u, e, o, then chant syllable rows: ba-bi-bu-be-bo, ca-ci-cu-ce-co, ma-mi-mu-me-mo. Two syllables make a word: bo + la = bola (ball), bu + ku = buku (book). This works so well because almost every Indonesian word is built from open syllables and every letter keeps its sound.
Learning Indonesian by age: a simple plan
| Age | Focus | Try this |
|---|---|---|
| 2-3 | Listening, 10-20 everyday words | Animals and colours in Listen mode; name family: Ayah, Ibu, Kakak, Adik |
| 3-4 | Counting 1-5, fruits, body parts | Count satu to lima on fingers; sing "Kepala, pundak, lutut, kaki" |
| 4-5 | Vowels A I U E O, counting 1-10 | Alphabet Find it; spot letters on food packets |
| 5-6 | Syllables, counting to 20 | Read ba-bi-bu rows, then bola, buku, sapi |
Teaching Indonesian at home in ten minutes a day
- Pick one routine. Bath time for anggota tubuh (body parts), snack time for buah (fruit).
- Use the market. Name pisang, jeruk and cabai at the shop, then find them in the game.
- Sing. Children's songs (lagu anak-anak) like "Balonku Ada Lima" teach colours and counting together.
- Play five minutes, then stop. End while your child still wants more.
- Link to English. Our animals name page and colours for kids help when English is still new.
Keep screens small and shared. Sit with your child, repeat the words out loud and point to real things. Under-2s learn best from a grown-up and real objects, so use the game as a short extra.
Tips for Indonesian families abroad
If you live in Australia, the Netherlands, the US, Singapore or the Middle East, your child may hear English all day at school. Choose one daily "Indonesian moment", such as breakfast or the drive home, and use only Indonesian then. Video calls with Nenek and Kakek give a real reason to speak. Festivals help too: Lebaran (Idul Fitri) with ketupat and "mohon maaf lahir dan batin", and 17 Agustus with lomba makan kerupuk games you can play in any garden.
Indonesian and Malay share many words, so children from mixed families can also try Malay for kids. You will spot small differences, such as apel and epal for apple.
Belajar bahasa Indonesia untuk anak
Halaman ini membantu Ayah dan Ibu mengenalkan bahasa Indonesia kepada anak dengan cara bermain. Anak bisa menyentuh gambar dan langsung mendengar kata dalam bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris: huruf abjad, angka 1 sampai 100, nama hewan, buah, sayur, warna, dan anggota tubuh.
Cukup bermain lima sampai sepuluh menit setiap hari.
How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: indonesian words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
