Measuring for kids starts long before rulers and centimetres. The first step is simple: line up small things of the same size along an object and count them. "The pencil is five blocks long." This is called non-standard measurement, and it teaches the ideas that make a ruler make sense later: start at the very end, leave no gaps, do not overlap, and use units that are all the same size. In the game above, an object such as a pencil, crayon, spoon, toothbrush or umbrella lies above an empty track. Your child taps to add blocks (or paper clips) one by one from the start line, hears each one counted, and then says how many long it is. Golu finishes the sentence in Hindi and English, for example "The umbrella is seven blocks long" and छाता सात ब्लॉक लंबा है।
What is non-standard measurement?
Standard units are the ones on a ruler: centimetres, metres, inches. Non-standard units are anything else you can repeat: blocks, paper clips, hand spans, footsteps, spoons. Children use them first because they can hold and count them. Curricula in India, China, Korea, Finland, the US and Mexico all begin measurement this way in the kindergarten years. In Hindi, length is लंबाई (lambai).
How to use this page
- Choose Blocks or Paper clips. Both use units of the same size, so your child can focus on counting the units carefully.
- Tap the dashed track to place the next unit. The track starts at the thick black line, which is also where the object starts.
- When the units reach the end of the object, Golu asks "How many blocks long is it?" Pick a number.
- Wrong answers get a gentle hint, never a buzzer. After a few objects a marble drops into the Goli Jar.

Measurement by age
Age 3-4: comparing directly: which is longer, which is shorter, big and small (try big and small). Age 4-5 (LKG): ordering three things by length, and measuring with a few blocks with help. Age 5-6 (UKG / kindergarten): measuring with equal units and saying "five blocks long", and noticing that bigger units give a smaller number. Class 1: moving towards a ruler and centimetres.
Measuring activities at home
Hand spans and footsteps
How many of your child's hand spans is the dining table? How many of yours? The numbers are different because hands are different sizes. This is the big discovery that explains why the world agreed on standard units.
Measure with food
How many peanuts long is a banana? How many biscuits long is a rolling pin? Line them up on the kitchen counter, then eat the units.
Paper clip chains
Make a chain of ten paper clips and measure books, shoes and toys. Write the results together: "My shoe is 6 clips."
Growing chart
Measure your child against a door frame with sheets of paper or hand spans every month. Children love seeing themselves grow.
Ask "Do you think the spoon is longer or shorter than the pencil?" before measuring. Estimating first and then checking is a real maths habit.
Common mistakes
- Starting in the middle of the object. Draw a start line, as the game does.
- Leaving gaps between units. Let your child push them together until they touch.
- Counting the gaps instead of the blocks. Touch each block while counting.
Words to use
Use rich comparison words in both languages: long / लंबा, short / छोटा, longer than / से लंबा, the same length / बराबर लंबा. The opposite words page practises many of these pairs.
For every child
All instructions are spoken and one tap places a unit, so children who do not read and children with fine-motor difficulties can play. With real objects, larger blocks such as duplo are easier to line up than small clips. For bilingual homes, pick the language order with अ+A. Keep screen sessions short and shared, then measure something real together. After measuring, try sorting games to order objects from shortest to longest, or count units with counting 1 to 10.
Questions to ask while you play
Before tapping, ask "How many blocks do you think it will be?" Write down the guess and compare it with the answer. After two objects, ask "Which was longer, the pencil or the crayon? By how many blocks?" That simple question mixes measuring with subtraction. Try asking "If we used bigger blocks, would we need more or fewer?" and test the idea with real blocks at home. When your child answers, ask them to say the whole sentence: "The pen is six blocks long." Saying full sentences builds maths language, which teachers value as much as the right number.
