Food words are some of the first words a child says, because they get used three times a day. This page teaches 25 food items name in Hindi and English with pictures, the dishes and drinks an Indian child actually sees: रोटी (roti), दाल (dal), चावल (chawal, rice), दही (dahi, curd), इडली (idli), पोहा (poha) and more. Each picture speaks both names in clear audio, so the word your child hears at school and the word they hear at the dining table become one.
What your child learns, and at what age
The list mixes everyday healthy food, drinks and a few treats. The food items for kids here are mostly vegetarian; egg is included because many families eat it, and you can simply skip it if yours does not.
| Age | What to aim for | Words to start with |
|---|---|---|
| 2-3 | Names the foods they eat daily; asks for them by name | Roti, rice, dal, milk, water |
| 3-4 | About 10 food names; says "I want…" in either language | Add curd, bread, idli, dosa, paratha, laddoo |
| 4-5 | Sorts healthy food from treats; names breakfast and dinner foods | Add khichdi, paneer, poha, upma, salad, honey |
| 5-6 (UKG, class 1) | All 25 in both languages; knows where foods come from (curd from milk, roti from wheat) | The full list, plus reading short words like दाल |
For a food items name for class 1 or UKG class project, 10 or 20 foods from this list are usually what the teacher asks for.
How to use this page
- Listen (सुनो): tap any food to hear its name and a short fact, like "Khichdi is rice and dal cooked together."
- Find it (ढूँढो): Golu asks for a food from 2-4 big pictures. A wrong tap is never called wrong: your child hears what they tapped, the right answer glows, then Golu points.
- Memory (जोड़ी): turn cards to find pairs.
Use the अ+A button to choose Hindi then English, English then Hindi, or one language only. Each finished round puts a marble in the Goli Jar; tap the jar to count them together. Settings, behind a grown-up check, let you set your child's age and turn on calm motion, calm sound, captions, fewer choices or high contrast.
How to teach food names at home in 5-10 minutes
- Name the plate. At every meal, name one or two foods in both languages. "This is दही, curd."
- Kitchen helper. This is how to have a toddler help in the kitchen safely: a 2-3 year old can wash rice in a bowl, a 4 year old can knead a small ball of atta, a 5 year old can spread butter on bread with a blunt knife. Keep them away from the stove and sharp knives.
- Pretend restaurant. Your child is the waiter and takes your order: "One idli and one glass of milk, please." Great for 4-6 year olds.
- Where does it come from? Curd and paneer come from milk, roti from wheat, poha from rice, honey from bees. Link each food to its source.
- Kitchen items too. Name the spoon, plate and katori while you serve. The kitchen items name page teaches these utensils.
Healthy food for kids: everyday food and treats
What is healthy food for kids? A simple definition for kids is: food that helps your body grow, gives energy for play and keeps you well. For young children, the idea "everyday food" and "sometimes food" works better than "good" and "bad", which can make children anxious about eating. This healthy food for kids chart uses the foods in the game.
| Everyday food (grow and play) | Sometimes food (treats) | Drinks |
|---|---|---|
| Roti, rice, dal, khichdi, curd, paneer, idli, dosa, poha, upma, paratha, salad, egg (if your family eats it) | Laddoo, ice cream, cake, biscuit, samosa, popcorn | Water and milk every day; tea is for grown-ups |
The good-or-not cards on good habits for kids practise the same idea through play.
Healthy food for kids tiffin and lunch box ideas (vegetarian)
Healthy food for kids for school works best when it is familiar, easy to eat with fingers, and still tastes good after a few hours. Some Indian vegetarian tiffin ideas:
- Mini idlis with a little chutney, or a rolled dosa cut into pieces
- Vegetable poha or upma with peas and carrots
- Paneer or aloo paratha cut into triangles, with curd in a small box
- Roti roll with dal-paneer filling
- Healthy snacks: a cut fruit, roasted chana, a small handful of plain popcorn
What food can I give to my toddler?
For a 2-3 year old, healthy food for kids 3 years old looks much like the family's food, made softer and less spicy: dal-rice, khichdi, curd, soft roti, mashed vegetables, idli and fruit. Cut food small, and supervise closely with round, hard foods like whole nuts or popcorn, which can cause choking in young children. If your child is not gaining weight, or you want healthy food for kids for weight gain, talk to your paediatrician rather than adding sugar or fried snacks.
How to teach kids healthy eating habits
How to feed your child healthy food without a battle is really about routine, not rules:
- Eat together. Children copy what the family eats and how they talk about it.
- You decide what, they decide how much. Serve the meal; let your child choose the amount. Forcing a clean plate makes meals tense.
- New food, next to old food. Put a spoon of something new beside a favourite. It can take 10-15 tries.
- No screen at meals. Play this game before or after, never while eating, so your child notices hunger and fullness.
- Treats without drama. A laddoo on Diwali or cake on a birthday is part of life. Keep treats small and occasional, and never use them as a reward for eating vegetables.

Food items names in India, and around the world
India's food changes every few hundred kilometres. Idli and dosa come from the south, poha is a Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh breakfast, paratha is loved in Punjab, and khichdi is cooked everywhere when someone is unwell. Ask your child, "What do we eat for breakfast? For dinner?" and name the dishes. Dinner foods at home, such as dal, rice, roti and sabzi, make a short list your child can say in both languages. Families living abroad can add local foods too: bread and pasta sit happily next to roti and rice in a bilingual child's vocabulary.

There is no separate PDF. The word list above is a food items name list with pictures, Hindi, English and pronunciation, and it prints from your browser (Print, then paper or "Save as PDF"). For a quick healthy food for kids worksheet, print it, and ask your child to circle everyday foods in green and treats in red. Older children can draw their favourite healthy meal and label it.
Keeping it kind
Praise effort: "You remembered paratha!" If your child gets frustrated in Find it, go back to Listen or turn on fewer choices. Children with speech delay can answer by pointing; say the word for them. Autistic children and children with sensory sensitivities may be very selective eaters; learning food names without any pressure to eat is a gentle first step, and your paediatrician or a feeding therapist can help if you are worried. In bilingual homes, use the language you cook in. Keep screen time short, about 5-10 minutes with you beside them, and remember that under-2s learn food words best from you at the table, not from a screen.
