Fruit names in Kannada are sweet words to learn, and your child probably eats several of these fruits every week. On this page there are 30 fruits with a picture each. Tap a fruit to hear its Kannada name and then the English, such as ಬಾಳೆಹಣ್ಣು (baalehannu, banana) or ದ್ರಾಕ್ಷಿ (draakshi, grapes). Then play Find it, where Golu asks for a fruit in Kannada, or Memory to match the pairs.
The magic word
In Kannada, ಹಣ್ಣು (hannu) means fruit, and ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳು (hannugalu) means fruits. Many fruit names end with it: ಮಾವಿನಹಣ್ಣು is "mango fruit", ಬಾಳೆಹಣ್ಣು is "banana fruit" and ಹಲಸಿನಹಣ್ಣು is "jackfruit fruit". Point this out to your child, and soon they will spot ಹಣ್ಣು inside new words on their own.
There is another little word worth knowing: ಕಾಯಿ (kaayi) means an unripe or hard fruit. That is why coconut is ತೆಂಗಿನಕಾಯಿ and amla is ನೆಲ್ಲಿಕಾಯಿ. A raw mango is ಮಾವಿನಕಾಯಿ, and a ripe one becomes ಮಾವಿನಹಣ್ಣು. Children love this ripe-or-raw game.
Fruits by colour
Sorting fruits by colour teaches two sets of Kannada words at once. Try this with the pictures in the game or with a real fruit basket:
| Colour | Fruits from the game |
|---|---|
A fun fact: ಕಿತ್ತಳೆ is both the fruit and part of the colour name, just like "orange" in English. And jamun, ನೇರಳೆಹಣ್ಣು, shares its root with ನೇರಳೆ, the word for purple.
Fruits of Karnataka through the year
Karnataka grows some of India's most loved fruits, which makes the market a great classroom:
- Summer (April to June): mango season. Look for mangoes from Kolar, Ramanagara and Dharwad, and jackfruit (ಹಲಸಿನಹಣ್ಣು) from the Malnad and coastal regions. Jackfruit melas are held in many towns. Summer also brings ಕಲ್ಲಂಗಡಿ (watermelon) and ಕರಬೂಜ (muskmelon).
- Monsoon: ನೇರಳೆಹಣ್ಣು (jamun) stains little fingers purple.
- Autumn and winter: ಸೀತಾಫಲ (custard apple), ಸೀಬೆಹಣ್ಣು (guava), ಕಿತ್ತಳೆ (orange) from Kodagu, and ನೆಲ್ಲಿಕಾಯಿ (amla).
- All year: ಬಾಳೆಹಣ್ಣು (banana), ತೆಂಗಿನಕಾಯಿ (coconut) and ಪರಂಗಿ (papaya).
Bananas and coconuts are part of almost every festival and puja in Karnataka, from Ugadi to Ganesha Chaturthi, so children see them offered and shared often.
Teaching fruit names in five minutes a day
- Breakfast naming. Name one fruit at breakfast in Kannada and English, then tap it in the game later.
- Feely bag. Hide a real fruit in a cloth bag. Your child feels it and guesses: is it ಬಾಳೆಹಣ್ಣು or ಸೇಬು?
- Market helper. At the fruit stall, let your child ask for "ಎರಡು ಸೇಬು" (two apples). Counting and naming in one go.
- Taste test. Sweet, sour or both? ನೆಲ್ಲಿಕಾಯಿ is sour, ಸಪೋಟ is very sweet.
- Find it race. Play one round of Find it, then find the same fruit in the kitchen.
Toddlers (2-3) do best with five or six everyday fruits. By 5-6, children can learn all 30 and start sorting them by colour, taste or season.
How to use the fruit game
Start in Listen mode and let your child tap freely. Each tap plays the Kannada word first and then the English, so your child hears ಸೀತಾಫಲ followed by "custard apple". When a handful of fruits feel familiar, switch to Find it. Golu asks for a fruit, and your child picks from two to four pictures, depending on the age you set in Settings. A wrong tap never gets a buzzer: Golu names the fruit that was tapped, the right one glows, and your child tries again. Every finished round drops a marble into the Goli Jar. Try Memory last, since matching pairs needs a little more focus. Sit beside your child for these short sessions and talk about the fruits; for children under two, a real banana in the hand teaches more than any screen.
Fruit words for families abroad
In the US, UK or the Gulf, the supermarket still has most of these fruits, and Indian grocery shops add chikoo, jamun and custard apple in season. Label the fruit bowl in Kannada and English, or play "I spy" in both languages. When you get a mango from home, it is a perfect moment for ಮಾವಿನಹಣ್ಣು. For English fruit names, try fruits name for kids. Next, visit vegetables in Kannada or colours in Kannada, count fruits with Kannada numbers, or return to learn Kannada for kids.
How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: kannada words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
