Learning vegetables name in Kannada gives your child words they will use at every meal. This page has 30 vegetables and leafy greens with a picture each. Tap one to hear the Kannada name and then the English, for example ಆಲೂಗಡ್ಡೆ (aaluugadde, potato) or ಗಜ್ಜರಿ (gajjari, carrot). When your child is ready, play Find it, where Golu asks for a vegetable in Kannada, or turn the cards over in Memory.
Two helpful words: ಕಾಯಿ and ಸೊಪ್ಪು
Kannada vegetable names follow two friendly patterns. Many vegetables end in ಕಾಯಿ (kaayi), the word for a vegetable-type fruit: ಬದನೆಕಾಯಿ (brinjal), ಬೆಂಡೆಕಾಯಿ (okra, ladies finger), ಸೌತೆಕಾಯಿ (cucumber), ಕುಂಬಳಕಾಯಿ (pumpkin), ನುಗ್ಗೆಕಾಯಿ (drumstick), ಹಾಗಲಕಾಯಿ (bitter gourd) and ಹೀರೆಕಾಯಿ (ridge gourd).
Leafy greens end in ಸೊಪ್ಪು (soppu): ಪಾಲಕ್ ಸೊಪ್ಪು (spinach), ಕೊತ್ತಂಬರಿ ಸೊಪ್ಪು (coriander) and ಮೆಂತ್ಯ ಸೊಪ್ಪು (fenugreek leaves). Once your child hears these endings, ask, "Is it a ಕಾಯಿ or a ಸೊಪ್ಪು?" It is a simple sorting game that builds real understanding of how Kannada words work.
Where do vegetables grow?
Children are often surprised that some vegetables grow under the ground. Use this table to talk about it while you cook:
| Grows | Vegetables from the game |
|---|---|
| Under the ground | ಆಲೂಗಡ್ಡೆ (potato), ಗಜ್ಜರಿ (carrot), ಈರುಳ್ಳಿ (onion), ಮೂಲಂಗಿ (radish), ಗೆಣಸು (sweet potato), ಬೆಳ್ಳುಳ್ಳಿ (garlic), ಶುಂಠಿ (ginger), ಬೀಟ್ರೂಟ್ |
| On a plant or bush | ಟೊಮೆಟೊ, ಬದನೆಕಾಯಿ, ಬೆಂಡೆಕಾಯಿ, ಮೆಣಸಿನಕಾಯಿ (chilli), ದೊಣ್ಣೆ ಮೆಣಸಿನಕಾಯಿ (capsicum) |
| On a climbing vine | ಸೋರೆಕಾಯಿ (bottle gourd), ಹಾಗಲಕಾಯಿ, ಹೀರೆಕಾಯಿ, ಸೌತೆಕಾಯಿ, ಹುರಳಿಕಾಯಿ (beans), ಬಟಾಣಿ (peas) |
| On a tree | ನುಗ್ಗೆಕಾಯಿ (drumstick), ಬಾಳೆಕಾಯಿ (raw banana) |
The ಅಣಬೆ (mushroom) is the odd one out: it is not a plant at all, but a fungus. Older children love that fact.
Vegetables in a Karnataka kitchen
Everyday Kannada cooking gives you a ready-made lesson. Sambar, called ಸಾರು or huli at home, often has ನುಗ್ಗೆಕಾಯಿ, ಕುಂಬಳಕಾಯಿ or ಬದನೆಕಾಯಿ. Palya, a dry stir-fry, might use ಹುರಳಿಕಾಯಿ or ಎಲೆಕೋಸು. Bisi bele bath mixes several vegetables at once, so your child can hunt for each one on the plate. Stuffed brinjal curry (ennegai) is a North Karnataka favourite. At Ugadi and Sankranti, special meals bring out even more vegetables.
The weekly market, the ಸಂತೆ, and the busy vegetable lanes of places like KR Market in Bengaluru are full of colour. Let your child point and name what they see. Vendors usually enjoy a child who asks for ಟೊಮೆಟೊ in Kannada.
Vegetable words for picky eaters
Knowing a vegetable's name can make a child more curious to taste it. Try these ideas, with no pressure to eat:
- Wash and name. Give your child a vegetable to wash and ask them to say its Kannada name.
- Colour hunt. Find something ಹಸಿರು (green), then something ಕೆಂಪು (red).
- Little gardener. Grow ಮೆಂತ್ಯ seeds or coriander in a pot. Sprouts appear within a week.
- Shop list. Draw three vegetables on a list and let your child find them at the shop.
Start toddlers with five vegetables they see often: potato, tomato, onion, carrot and cucumber. Add the gourds and greens for children aged four and up.
Playing the vegetable game together
Begin with Listen: your child taps a picture and hears the Kannada name, then the English, as many times as they like. Some names are long, such as ದೊಣ್ಣೆ ಮೆಣಸಿನಕಾಯಿ (capsicum), so let your child say them slowly in parts. Next, play Find it. Golu asks for a vegetable in Kannada and your child chooses from a few pictures. If they tap the wrong one, the game simply names it and gently points to the right answer, with no "wrong" and no pressure. Finish with Memory to match pairs. Each game ends with a marble in the Goli Jar, which you can count together. Keep sessions short, sit together, and then carry the words into the kitchen, where real vegetables can be touched, smelled and named.
Vegetable names for families abroad
Outside India, some names change: okra instead of ladies finger, aubergine instead of brinjal in the UK, eggplant in the US, and zucchini or courgette in place of the gourds. Indian grocery stores in the US, UK and Gulf usually stock drumstick, bitter gourd and methi, so a trip there becomes a Kannada lesson. How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: kannada words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
