Left and right for kids is one of the harder early ideas, and it is completely normal for a five-year-old to mix them up. Up, down, in and on are easy because they look the same from every side. Left and right change depending on which way you face. This page gives your child two gentle games. In Hands, a child seen from the back raises one waving hand and Golu asks "Which hand is waving, left or right?" In Plate, a round plate is split into two halves and Golu says "Put the apple on the LEFT side of the plate." Every word comes in Hindi and English: left is बायाँ (baayaan) and right is दायाँ (daayaan). It is free and works in any browser.
At what age do kids know left and right?
Most children can show their own left and right hands at around 5 or 6, but it often becomes secure only at 6-7, and many adults still pause before answering. Knowing left and right on another person who faces you comes later still, usually around 7-8, because you have to imagine turning around. So please do not worry if your four-year-old guesses. This page is meant as early, playful exposure:

How to play the left and right game
Hands: "Which hand is waving, left or right?"
A child stands with her back to us and waves one hand. Your child taps one of two big buttons, Left / बायाँ or Right / दायाँ. We chose the back view on purpose: because we see her from the back, her left hand is on our left side too. After the answer, the voice explains this in simple words, so your child can check using their own hand. This is the fairest way to start, because a child facing you would have her left hand on your right, which even grown-ups find confusing.
Plate: "Put the apple on the LEFT side of the plate."
A round plate is split into two halves. Golu names a food (an apple, banana, mango, strawberry, carrot, biscuit or egg) and a side, and your child taps the left or right half to put it there. This mirrors real table manners and gives a practical reason to know left and right.
The game never says "wrong". If your child taps the other side, they first hear which side they chose, then the right side glows, then Golu points to it. After four to eight rounds (set by the age in Settings), a marble drops into the Goli Jar and a real-world mission appears. How to teach left and right at home
The secret is to anchor one side to something your child already knows, then practise a little every day, standing up and moving, not just on a screen.
- Pick one anchor. Choose the hand your child eats or writes with, and name it every time: "This is your right hand, the one you eat with." Once one side is sure, the other side is "the other one".
- A band or sticker. Tie a thread, a rakhi or a hair band on the right wrist for a week. Children look at it and remember.
- The L trick (for 5-6 year olds). Hold both hands up, palms out, thumbs sideways. The left hand makes a proper "L". This works once your child knows the letter L, and it is a trick many adults still use.
- Dressing. "Left sock, right sock. Left shoe, right shoe." Draw a small dot inside the right shoe so the two dots touch when the shoes are placed correctly.
- Simon says. "Simon says touch your right ear. Simon says hop on your left foot." Moving the body helps memory more than looking.
- Table setting. At meals, ask your child to put the glass on the right side of the plate. It matches the Plate game exactly.
- Walks. On the way to school or the market, say "we turn right at the temple, left at the shop". Let your child be the guide.
Stand beside your child, facing the same way, when you practise. If you sit opposite, your left is on their right, and that is exactly the confusion you want to avoid at this age.
Left and right confusion: is it a problem?
Mixing up left and right is common in children and in plenty of adults, and on its own it is not a sign of a learning problem. Letter reversals like b and d are also normal up to about age 7. Being left-handed is simply a natural variation; never force a left-handed child to switch hands. Keep practice light and playful, and give it time. If your child has many other difficulties with movement, balance or following directions, or if you are worried about their development, talk to your paediatrician.
Left and right in Hindi
In Hindi, left is बायाँ (baayaan) or बाएँ (baaen, "on the left"), and right is दायाँ (daayaan) or दाएँ (daaen, "on the right"). You will hear बायाँ हाथ (left hand), दायाँ हाथ (right hand) and दाएँ मुड़ो (turn right). Many families also say सीधा हाथ (the straight hand) for the right hand and उल्टा हाथ (the other hand) for the left. Use whatever words you say at home, and connect them to the Hindi and English in the game.
Left and right worksheet and printing
There is no PDF, but you can print this page from your browser. The age table works as a short guide for teachers. For a quick left and right worksheet, trace your child's two hands on paper, write L and R on them together, and let your child colour the left hand blue and the right hand red. Then draw a plate and ask them to draw a mango on the right side.
Gentle tips for every child
Praise the checking ("you looked at your hand to check"), not a quick answer. If your child gets upset, stop and do Simon says instead. Children with autism may do well with the same anchor every day and one question at a time; turn on fewer choices and calm motion in Settings. For speech delay, let your child point or lift the correct hand before saying the word. Keep sessions short and sit together; for children under two, real play with you is better than any screen.
Left and right pair well with body parts names in Hindi and English, opposite words for kids and action words such as wave, hop and turn. The Plate game uses the foods on fruits name in Hindi, and ordinal numbers (first, second, third) builds more position words.
