Children learn sports words the same way they learn to kick a ball: by doing it again and again, with someone cheering. This page gives your child each sports name in Hindi and English with a bright picture and clear audio, from cricket and football to kabaddi and kho-kho. Play a few rounds here, then go outside and play the real thing. The words stick much better when little legs have been running.
Which sports are on this page
There are 15 sports and games. Team games: cricket (क्रिकेट), football (फ़ुटबॉल), kabaddi (कबड्डी), hockey (हॉकी), kho-kho (खो-खो), basketball and volleyball. Racket games: badminton, tennis and table tennis. Games you can do alone: running (दौड़), swimming (तैराकी), cycling, kite flying (पतंगबाज़ी) and chess (शतरंज), which is a board game played sitting down.
Each card also has a short fact, like "Badminton is played with a shuttlecock." The word list above has every name with pronunciation and 🔊 buttons, so it works as a ready sports name chart. Print this page from your browser if you want it on paper for a school project or a worksheet.
What is sports name? (sports name kya hota hai)
A sports name is simply the word for a game people play to move their body and have fun, often with rules and a ball, bat or racket. For a young child, a sport is "a game we play with our body". For class 1 and class 2, you can add that some sports are played in a team and some alone.
How to use the games
- Listen: tap any picture to hear the sport in Hindi and English. Good for first meetings with new words.
- Find it: Golu says "Where is cricket?" and your child taps the right picture. Two choices at age 2-3, up to four at age 5-6, set in Settings.
- Memory: flip cards to find matching pairs. It builds focus as well as vocabulary.
There is no "wrong" in any game. A mistaken tap hears the name of what was tapped, then the correct card glows, then Golu points to it. Each game ends with a marble for the Goli Jar. The अ+A button switches between Hindi first, English first, Hindi only and English only, which helps if your child's school teaches in one language and home speaks another.
Sports name and equipment, and number of players
Once your child knows the names, older children (5-6, class 1) enjoy the "what do you need?" game. This table keeps the numbers simple and true.
| Sport | What you play with | Players on one side |
|---|---|---|
| Cricket | Bat, ball, stumps | 11 |
| Football | Ball, kicked with the feet | 11 |
| Hockey | Curved stick and ball | 11 |
| Kabaddi | Nothing but your body and breath | 7 |
| Kho-kho | Nothing, just running and chasing | 9 on the field |
| Basketball | Ball and a high hoop | 5 |
| Volleyball | Ball and a net | 6 |
| Badminton | Racket and shuttlecock | 1 or 2 |
| Tennis / table tennis | Racket (bat) and ball | 1 or 2 |
| Chess | Board and pieces | 1 |
A fun sorting question: "Name sports you play with ball." The answer from our list is cricket, football, hockey, tennis, table tennis, basketball and volleyball. Badminton is a trick one, because it uses a shuttlecock.
What sports can toddlers play, and what to teach at each age
- Age 2-3: what sport can a 2 year old play? Running, kicking a soft ball, throwing into a bucket and splashing in a shallow tub with a grown-up close by. Teach five easy sports names: running, football, cricket, cycling and swimming.
- Age 3-4: add kite flying, badminton with a balloon and a slow game of catch. Grow to 10 sports names. Play Find it with three pictures.
- Age 4-5: simple rules begin to make sense, like "wait your turn" in cricket. Learn all 15, and try kho-kho and kabaddi with friends.
- Age 5-6 (sports name for UKG class and class 1): sort by team and solo, talk about equipment and practise writing short words like RUN and BAT.
What sports are good for toddlers? Anything that uses the big muscles and has no pressure to win. Your praise for trying matters more than the score.
How to teach sports names at home in 5-10 minutes
- Act it out: say a sport and your child acts it: swing a bat, kick, swim with arms, pull a kite string. These are great action words for kids, too.
- Park play: at the park, name what other children are playing. "Those boys are playing cricket, क्रिकेट."
- TV match chat: when a match is on, ask "Which sport is this? What do they play with?"
- Body words: link each sport to a body part: we kick with our feet, we throw with our hands. Our body parts name page helps here.
- Drawing: a ball, a bat or a kite is easy to draw. A simple sports name drawing with a label makes a nice first "project".
Sports of India: a little culture for kids
Kabaddi and kho-kho are old Indian games that need no equipment at all, which is why children play them in school grounds and village lanes everywhere. In kabaddi, a player crosses to the other side saying "kabaddi, kabaddi" in one breath. Kite flying fills the sky around Makar Sankranti and Uttarayan in January. Cricket is the game almost every Indian child meets first, while hockey has a proud Olympic history in India. Around the world, football is played in almost every country, so it is a good word to share with cousins abroad.
School sports day names for preschool usually include a running race, a lemon-and-spoon race and a sack race. Talk about these before the day so your child knows what to expect.
Kind, calm and inclusive
Sports names for girls and boys are the same, and every child can play every sport. Say so plainly, and show pictures of all kinds of players. Children who are not yet confident with their bodies can start with chess or kite flying. For a child with speech delay, the action is often the first "word": if your child mimes batting, say the word for them and smile. Autistic children may prefer the Listen mode and a quiet space; turn on calm sound in Settings. If your child gets upset after losing a real game, name the feeling and move on together. Our page on good habits for kids has more on playing outside every day. If you are worried about your child's movement or speech, talk to your paediatrician.
Screen time: short sessions of around 10 minutes, played together, are best. For children under two, real balls and a grown-up to play with beat any screen.
