Light and shadow for kids is one of the easiest pieces of science to see with your own eyes. Your child already chases their shadow in the park and notices the dark shape under a tree. This page lets them control the light themselves. They tap Left, Middle or Right to move a torch, and the shadow of a teddy, a plant or a toy rabbit swings to the opposite side, or shrinks into a small patch when the light is high above. In the second game they decide whether light goes through a window, a glass, spectacles or bubbles, or whether a book, a door, a stone and an umbrella block it. Every sentence is spoken in Hindi and English, like shadow (परछाईं) and light (रोशनी).

What is a shadow, and how is it formed?

Light travels in straight lines. When something is in the way and blocks the light, there is a dark area behind it where the light cannot reach. That dark shape is a shadow. Three things are needed:

  • a light source, like the sun, a torch, a lamp or a दीया;
  • an object that blocks the light, like your hand or a teddy;
  • a surface for the shadow to fall on, like the floor or a wall.

A child-sized version: "The teddy stops the light. The dark shape behind it is its shadow."

Why do shadows change? (the torch game)

The rule children discover in the torch game is simple and always true: the shadow falls on the side away from the light.

This is also why your shadow is long in the morning and evening but tiny at lunchtime. When the sun is low in the sky, the shadow stretches far. When the sun is high overhead, the shadow almost hides under your feet. Go outside at 9 am, noon and 5 pm and stand in the same spot with your child. Mark the end of their shadow with chalk each time. It is a lovely week-long experiment.

See-through or not? Transparent and opaque for kids

Some things let light pass through them. We call them transparent or see-through (पारदर्शी): clear glass, water, spectacles, a plastic sheet, soap bubbles. Other things block the light and make a shadow. We call them opaque: wood, stone, a book, a teddy, your body. Some things are in between (translucent), like tracing paper, a frosted bathroom window or a thin cotton दुपट्टा: some light gets through, but you cannot see clearly.

For children under five, two words are enough: "see-through" and "blocks the light". The game uses exactly those. For five- and six-year-olds you can add the real words transparent and opaque.

Torch test: in a dark room, shine a torch through a glass of water, a steel tumbler, a sheet of paper, a plastic bag and your hand. Ask each time, "Does the light come through?" Children remember what they discover themselves far better than what they are told.

How to use this page

  • Torch: tap the three big buttons in any order. The torch moves, a warm glow lights the room, and the shadow slides across the floor. Try all three positions to finish the round, then tap Next for a new object. There are three objects.
  • See-through? A picture appears with two buttons: See-through or Blocks light. A wrong tap brings a gentle hint, never a buzzer.

At the end of each game, a marble drops into the Goli Jar and your child gets a mission to try with a real torch. Use the 🔊 button to hear any line again and the अ+A button to change the language order. The shadow matching game is a good next step: children match a picture to its dark outline, which builds visual skills.

Shadow play at home in 5-10 minutes

  • Hand shadows at bedtime: a bird, a dog, a rabbit. Let your child move the torch closer and further away. Closer to the light makes a bigger shadow.
  • Shadow tracing: on a sunny morning, put a toy on paper and trace around its shadow. Come back an hour later: the shadow has moved!
  • Shadow tag in the park: try to step on each other's shadows. It works best in the late afternoon when shadows are long.
  • Diwali and power cuts: a दीया or candle makes flickering shadows on the wall. It is a calm way to talk about light, with a grown-up always close to the flame.
  • Shadow puppets: cut simple shapes from card, tape them to sticks and hold them between a lamp and a wall. Tell a short story together.

What to expect at each age

At 2-3, children enjoy simply noticing: "Look, your shadow! It moves when you move." At 3-4, they can say that a shadow needs light and that it is dark where the light is blocked. At 4-5, they predict where the shadow will go when the torch moves, and sort things into see-through or not. At 5-6, they can explain long and short shadows and use the words transparent and opaque.

Gentle tips for every child

Some young children feel a little scared of dark rooms or big shadows on the wall. Keep the lights low rather than off, let your child hold the torch, and make the shadows friendly animals. Praise effort and curiosity ("You moved the torch to test it. That is what scientists do!"). For a child with a speech delay, pointing to where the shadow will go is a full answer. Autistic children often love the predictable rule of the torch game; let them repeat it as many times as they like. In bilingual homes, use परछाईं and shadow side by side. Keep screen sessions short and shared, then switch off the screen and play with a real torch. For children under two, a grown-up making hand shadows is far better than any screen.

How to use this page at home

Say it, then find it

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: light and shadow on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.

Ten minutes is enough

Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.

Use both languages

How is a shadow formed?
A shadow forms when an object blocks light. The light cannot pass through, so a dark shape appears on the side of the object away from the light.
Why does a shadow move when the light moves?
The shadow always falls on the side away from the light. If the light moves to the left, the shadow moves to the right, and the other way round.
Why is my shadow long in the evening and short at noon?
In the morning and evening the sun is low in the sky, so shadows stretch out long. At noon the sun is high overhead, so shadows are short and right under you.
What is the difference between transparent and opaque?
Transparent things, like clear glass and water, let light through so you can see through them. Opaque things, like wood, stone and books, block light and make shadows.
Can there be a shadow without light?
No. A shadow needs light. In complete darkness there is no shadow, because there is no light to block.
