Most face words are short, one or two syllables, which makes them perfect first words: नाक, कान, दात, गाल. ओठ (lips) is also the picture word for on the Marathi alphabet page. The traditional rhyme अडगुलं मडगुलं, sung while touching a baby's face and putting a little तीट (kajal dot) on the cheek, has taught these words for generations.

Hands, arms, legs and feet in Marathi

In everyday Marathi, हात (haat) means both arm and hand, and पाय (paay) means both leg and foot. The game uses a few more exact words: पंजा (panja) for the hand, "the palm with fingers", and पाऊल (paaul) for the foot or footstep.

  • खांदा (khaanda) shoulder · कोपर (kopar) elbow · बोट (bot) finger · अंगठा (angtha) thumb · नख (nakh) nail
  • मान (maan) neck · पोट (pot) tummy · पाठ (paath) back · गुडघा (gudgha) knee
  • पायाचं बोट (paayacha bot) toe: literally "the leg's finger", which makes children laugh.

Note that अंगठा (thumb) and अंगठी (ring, the picture word for अं) sound alike. A ring goes on a finger, not the thumb, a fun puzzle for 5-year-olds.

Inside the body: internal body parts in Marathi

Five- and six-year-olds are curious about what is inside. The game includes मेंदू (mendu, brain), हृदय (hruday, heart), फुफ्फुसं (phuphphusa, lungs) and हाडं (haada, bones). Make them real: after running, put your child's hand on their chest to feel the हृदय beating fast; take a big breath and feel the फुफ्फुसं fill like a balloon; press gently on an elbow to find the हाड underneath.

Songs, games and daily moments

  1. Sing it. Use the tune of "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" with डोकं, खांदा, गुडघा, पाय. Go faster each round.
  2. Where is it? "नाक कुठे आहे?" (where is the nose?) Your child points. Then swap roles.
  3. Bath and oil time. Name each part as you wash it. The Diwali अभ्यंगस्नान, when उटणं is rubbed from head to foot, is a perfect naming moment.
  4. Trace your child. Draw around your child on a big sheet and label parts together in Marathi.
  5. Animal bodies. The हत्ती has big कान, the ससा has long ones. Compare on animals name in Marathi.

Count ten fingers with numbers in Marathi: दहा बोटं. For feelings, emotions for kids shows faces; ask what the डोळे and तोंड are doing. The English and Hindi body parts name game has the same 30 words.

Habits, health and body safety

Body words help children tell you how they feel. "माझं पोट दुखतंय" (my tummy hurts) is one of the most useful sentences a small child can learn. Link words to good habits: brush your दात, cut your नखं, wash your हात before eating. It is also a calm moment to teach that some parts are private, and that your child can always tell you if something feels wrong.

For children with speech delay, pointing counts as learning. Stay with five parts for longer and use the fewer choices setting. If you are worried about speech or hearing, talk to your paediatrician.

How to use this page at home

Say it, then find it

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: marathi words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.

Ten minutes is enough

Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.

Use both languages

Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
