Numbers in Marathi are part of daily life in every Marathi home: counting पोळ्या (polya) on a plate, steps to the building gate, or modaks at Ganpati. The chart above lets your child tap any number from 1 to 100 and hear it in Marathi and English. Press Count with me and Golu counts 1 to 10, 1 to 20 or all the way from एक (ek) to शंभर (shambhar, 100).

Marathi numbers 1 to 10 with Marathi digits

Marathi has its own digits, the Devanagari numerals, and unlike in many other states they are still in everyday use in Maharashtra: on calendars, school books, shop bills, bus numbers and wedding cards. So Marathi children usually learn both the word and the digit.

3तीनteen
4चारchaar
5पाचpaach
6सहाsaha
7सातsaat
8आठaath
9नऊnau
10१०दहाdaha

Zero is शून्य (shoonya), written . Watch for digits that look like other things: (9) looks a little like the English 9 but (8) does not look like 8 at all, and (7) is easy to mix up with (6). Play "which number is this?" with a calendar.

Marathi numbers 11 to 20

The teens must simply be learned, like "eleven" and "twelve" in English: अकरा (akra, 11), बारा (baara, 12), तेरा (tera, 13), चौदा (chauda, 14), पंधरा (pandhra, 15), सोळा (sola, 16), सतरा (satra, 17), अठरा (athra, 18), एकोणीस (ekonees, 19) and वीस (vees, 20). Notice that 16 is सोळा with the Marathi , where Hindi says solah.

The "ekon" pattern: 19, 29, 39…

Here is the pattern children enjoy discovering. Every number ending in 9 (up to 89) is said as "one less than the next ten". एकोणीस (19) is "one short of वीस (20)". एकोणतीस (ekontees, 29) is one short of तीस (30), and एकोणचाळीस (39) is one short of चाळीस (40). Ask your 5-year-old: "If 30 is tees, what is 29?" Working it out is real maths thinking. The one exception is 99, नव्व्याण्णव (navvyaannav).

Counting in tens in Marathi

NumberMarathiSay it
१० 10दहाdaha
२० 20वीसvees
३० 30तीसtees
४० 40चाळीसchaalees
५० 50पन्नासpannaas
६० 60साठsaath
७० 70सत्तरsattar
८० 80ऐंशीaimshi
९० 90नव्वदnavvad
१०० 100शंभरshambhar

Numbers in between join a unit and the ten into one word, and some sounds change: एकवीस (ekvees, 21), पंचवीस (panchvees, 25). Tap them on the chart to hear how they sound. Children who know Hindi numbers will find many close cousins, but not twins: 80 is ऐंशी in Marathi and assi in Hindi, 100 is शंभर and not sau. Compare them side by side with Hindi ginti.

How to teach Marathi numbers at home

  • Count real things. पोळ्या, buttons, stairs, shoes at the door. Touch each one as you count.
  • Festival counting. Count modaks for Bappa, diyas at Diwali, or tilgul pieces at Sankranti.
  • Read digits around you. The calendar, lift buttons and bus numbers often show १ २ ३.
  • Play games. Count to दहा in lapandav (hide and seek), or count jumps while skipping.
  • One step at a time. Make 1 to 10 solid before adding the teens, then 20 to 100 by tens.
AgeRealistic Marathi counting goal
2-3Says some numbers 1 to 5, often out of order. That is fine.
3-4Counts एक ते दहा, touching each object once
4-5 (LKG)Counts to 20, recognises digits to १०
5-6 (UKG, class 1)Counts to 100 by tens, reads and writes Marathi digits, knows the ekon pattern

Children at English-medium schools may count in English and in Marathi at home. That is a strength. After they count in English, ask "and in Marathi?" and let them switch. More number practice: counting 1 to 10, counting 1 to 100 and addition for kids, where you can say every answer in Marathi.

Count with me बटण दाबून शंभरपर्यंत एकत्र मोजा.

How to use this page at home

Say it, then find it

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: marathi words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.

Ten minutes is enough

Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.

Use both languages

Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.

Numbers in Marathi: questions parents ask

How do you count 1 to 10 in Marathi?
एक (ek), दोन (don), तीन (teen), चार (chaar), पाच (paach), सहा (saha), सात (saat), आठ (aath), नऊ (nau), दहा (daha).
How do you say 100 in Marathi?
100 is शंभर (shambhar), written १००. 1,000 is हजार (hajaar).
How do you write Marathi digits?
Marathi uses Devanagari digits: ० १ २ ३ ४ ५ ६ ७ ८ ९. They work exactly like 0 to 9, so २५ is 25.
Why is 19 called ekonis in Marathi?
एकोणीस means "one less than twenty". The same pattern gives 29, 39 and so on up to 89.
Are Marathi numbers the same as Hindi numbers?
They are related but not the same. For example, 16 is सोळा (solah in Hindi), 80 is ऐंशी (assi) and 100 is शंभर (sau).
Can I print a Marathi numbers chart?
Print this page from your browser. The tables for 1 to 10 and the tens show Marathi digits, words and English spellings side by side.
