Numbers in Tamil are one of the first things Tamil children learn, often before the alphabet, through counting songs, stairs and idli on a plate. Tamil numbers 1 to 10
These ten words are the base for everything else. At home, most people say them a little shorter than they are written, for example "onnu, rendu, moonu" for ஒன்று, இரண்டு, மூன்று. The game uses the written form, which is what school books use. Both are correct.

Zero is பூஜ்ஜியம் (poojjiyam), and many children also hear the old Tamil word சுழியம் (suzhiyam).
Tamil numbers 11 to 20: the "pathi" pattern
The teens are built from பத்து (pathu, ten). The first part changes to "pathi" or "pan" and the unit is added: பதினொன்று (pathinonru, 11), பன்னிரண்டு (panniirandu, 12), பதிமூன்று (pathimoonru, 13), பதினான்கு (pathinaangu, 14), பதினைந்து (pathinainthu, 15), up to பதினெட்டு (pathinettu, 18). Then comes a surprise: 19 is பத்தொன்பது (patthonbathu), "ten-nine", and 20 is இருபது (irupathu). Point out that 12 and 19 sound different from the rest, because those are the ones children mix up.

Once your child knows the tens, the numbers in between are easy: the ten changes its ending to "pathi" or "pathth" and the unit follows. இருபத்தொன்று (irupatthonru) is 21, இருபத்தைந்து (irupatthainthu) is 25, and தொண்ணூற்றொன்பது (thonnootronbathu) is 99. Tamil numerals: the old number symbols
Tamil has its own digits, for example ௧ (1), ௨ (2), ௩ (3) and ௰ (10). Today almost everyone writes 1, 2, 3, and schools teach numbers with these familiar digits. You may still see Tamil numerals on temple walls, old calendars and some clocks, which makes a fun "spot the number" game on a visit.
How to teach Tamil numbers at home
- Count real things. Idli on a plate, steps to the door, buttons on a shirt. Touch each one as you say ஒன்று, இரண்டு.
- Play hide and seek. Count to பத்து in Tamil before you seek.
- Use a kolam. Count the dots before drawing, the way grandmothers do.
- Sing the numbers. Counting rhymes make the teens stick.
- One step at a time. Make 1 to 10 solid before adding the teens.

Children abroad often count in English at school and in Tamil at home. That is a strength. Ask "How many in Tamil?" after they count in English, and let them switch.
Number games and next steps
Once your child counts to ten in Tamil, bring numbers into other games. On animals name in Tamil, ask "How many legs does a பசு have?" and count நான்கு together. On fruits name in Tamil, count bananas in a bunch. For practice with objects and simple sums in English, try counting 1 to 10 and before and after numbers, then say the answers in Tamil.
Money and time are good for older children. Coins are counted in ரூபாய் (roobaai), and "மணி என்ன?" (mani enna?) means "what time is it?". Asking your 6-year-old to read the clock in Tamil, "மூன்று மணி" (three o'clock), uses the same number words in a new way. Children who also learn Hindi at school can compare with Hindi ginti: the patterns are different, and spotting that is real maths thinking.
பெற்றோருக்கு
எண்களைக் கற்றுக்கொடுக்க வீடே சிறந்த இடம். படிக்கட்டுகளை எண்ணுங்கள். தட்டில் உள்ள இட்லிகளை எண்ணுங்கள். ஒவ்வொன்றையும் தொட்டு ஒன்று, இரண்டு, மூன்று என்று சொல்லுங்கள்.

Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: tamil words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
