Numbers in Bengali are part of daily life in every Bangla home, from counting রসগোল্লা in a box to the price on a sweet-shop board. The chart above lets your child tap any number from 1 to 100 and hear it in Bengali and English. Press Count with me and Golu counts 1 to 10, 1 to 20 or all the way from এক (ek) to একশো (eksho, 100).

Bengali numbers 1 to 10 with Bangla digits

Bengali has its own digits, and unlike in many parts of India they are in everyday use: on calendars, newspapers, school books, bus numbers and shop bills, in both West Bengal and Bangladesh. So Bengali children usually learn the word and the digit together.

Zero is শূন্য (shunno), written . Watch out for two tricky digits: Bangla (four) looks like an English 8, and (seven) looks like an English 9. Children who read both systems mix these up at first. Make a game of it with a calendar: "Is this four or eight?"

Bengali numbers 11 to 20

The teens each have their own word: এগারো (egaro, 11), বারো (baro, 12), তেরো (tero, 13), চোদ্দ (choddo, 14), পনেরো (ponero, 15), ষোলো (sholo, 16), সতেরো (shotero, 17), আঠারো (atharo, 18), উনিশ (unish, 19) and বিশ (bish, 20). Most end in "-o", which gives them a rhythm. Say them like a chant, and clap on each one.

The "un" pattern: 19, 29, 39…

Bengali numbers from 21 to 99 each have their own word, so they take practice. But there is one pattern children love to discover: numbers ending in 9 start with "un" or "uno", which means "one less". উনিশ (19) is one less than বিশ (20). ঊনত্রিশ (unotrish, 29) is one less than ত্রিশ (30), and ঊনচল্লিশ (39) is one less than চল্লিশ (40), all the way to ঊননব্বই (89). Ask your 5-year-old: "If 50 is ponchash, what might 49 be?" The answer, ঊনপঞ্চাশ, is real maths thinking. The one surprise is 99: নিরানব্বই (niranobboi).

Numbers in between blend the unit and the ten into one word: একুশ (ekush, 21), পঁচিশ (pochish, 25). Tap them on the chart to hear how they sound. 1,000 is হাজার (hajar). Many Bengali numbers are close cousins of Hindi ones (পঞ্চাশ and pachaas, সত্তর and sattar), which helps children who learn both; compare with Hindi ginti.

How to teach Bengali numbers at home

  • Count real things. Luchi on a plate, stairs, shoes at the door. Touch each one as you say এক, দুই, তিন.
  • Read digits around you. The calendar, a newspaper, a sweet-shop price board.
  • Festival counting. Count diyas at Diwali, days to Durga Puja, or pitha at Poush Sankranti.
  • Songs and games. Count to দশ in লুকোচুরি (hide and seek), or count jumps while skipping.
  • One step at a time. Make 1 to 10 solid, then the teens, then tens to 100.
AgeRealistic Bengali counting goal
2-3Says some numbers 1 to 5, often out of order. That is fine.
3-4Counts এক থেকে দশ, touching each object once
4-5 (nursery, KG)Counts to 20, recognises digits to ১০
5-6 (KG, class 1)Counts to 100 by tens, reads and writes Bangla digits, knows the "un" pattern

Children at English-medium schools often count in English first. After they count in English, ask "and in Bangla?" and let them switch. More number practice with objects: counting 1 to 10, counting 1 to 100 and addition for kids; say each answer in Bengali. On animals name in Bengali, count legs: a গরু has চার.

How to use this page at home

Say it, then find it

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: bengali words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.

Ten minutes is enough

Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.

Use both languages

Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.

Can I print a Bengali numbers chart?
Print this page from your browser. The tables for 1 to 10 and for the tens show Bangla digits, words and English spellings side by side.
