Numbers in Indonesian are a joy to teach, because once your child knows one to ten, the rest follow a simple pattern with no exceptions. The pattern: belas, puluh and se-
Three little words build every number up to 100:
- belas makes the teens: dua belas (12), tiga belas (13), up to sembilan belas (19).
- puluh means tens: dua puluh (20), tiga puluh (30), lima puluh (50).
- se- means "one": sepuluh (10), sebelas (11) and seratus (100).
So 21 is dua puluh satu, "two tens one", and 57 is lima puluh tujuh. Children who have learned numbers in English often find Indonesian easier, because there are no odd words like "eleven" or "twelve" to memorise. Show your child the pattern on the chart by tapping 20, 30 and 40 in a row.
What counting looks like by age
Indonesian preschools follow the play-based Kurikulum Merdeka. In the playgroup years (KB, about 2-4) children count satu to lima with objects. In TK A (4-5) they count to ten and match numerals to groups of things. In TK B (5-6) they count to twenty and do simple adding and taking away with real objects. Counting to 100 is a stretch goal for 5-6 year olds; saying the tens (sepuluh, dua puluh, tiga puluh) is a great first step. Counting games from Indonesia to play at home
- Sing "Balonku Ada Lima". This much-loved song counts five balloons of different colours, so it practises lima and colour names together.
- Congklak. The traditional shell board game (similar to mancala) makes children count seeds into holes. A cardboard egg box works too.
- Engklek. Draw a hopscotch grid in chalk, write numbers in the boxes and call them out in Indonesian as your child hops.
- Kitchen counting. Count kerupuk, spoons or rambutans at snack time.
- Stairs. Count every step on the way up, then back down.
Keep "Count with me" sessions short. Two minutes of counting and a jump at the end ("sepuluh, jump!") beats ten minutes of sitting.
Indonesian and Malay numbers compared
If your family also speaks Malay, you will notice that the numbers are almost the same. The main difference is eight: delapan in Indonesian and lapan in Malay. Children in mixed homes can use both without confusion. Compare them on the numbers in Malay page.
Numbers in Indonesian daily life
Numbers turn up all through an Indonesian day, which gives you plenty of real practice. Ask your child's age, "Umurnya berapa?", and let them answer with fingers and a word: "Empat!". Count the ketupat hanging at Lebaran, the candles on a birthday cake, or the rakaat in prayer if your family prays together. At 17 Agustus, children take part in lomba races where scores are counted aloud. Money is another rich source: Indonesian notes come in seribu (1,000), dua ribu, lima ribu and more, so older children learn the word ribu (thousand) early from the warung.
For children abroad, mealtimes and stairs are the easiest places to count in Indonesian every day. If your child counts in English at school, that is not a problem. Many bilingual children count in one language and later "switch on" the other with practice. Try counting in English one day and in Indonesian the next, or split the job: you say the odd numbers in Indonesian and your child says the even ones.
Belajar angka 1 sampai 100 untuk anak

Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: indonesian words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
