If you want to learn Tamil for kids at home, this is a gentle place to start. Here your child hears Tamil letters, numbers and everyday words with a picture for each one, and English alongside. The games speak every word aloud, so a three-year-old who cannot read yet can still tap, listen and find. Grown-ups who never learned to read Tamil can follow along too, because every word has an English spelling in the word lists.
Tamil is spoken by more than 80 million people in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and in Tamil families across the UK, Canada, the US, Australia and the Gulf. It is one of the oldest living languages in the world, with poetry more than 2,000 years old. For a child, though, Tamil starts with அம்மா (amma), அப்பா (appa) and தண்ணீர் (thanneer, water).
What is inside: seven Tamil games for kids
- Tamil alphabet for kids: the 12 உயிர் எழுத்துக்கள் (uyir, vowels) and 18 மெய் எழுத்துக்கள் (mei, consonants), each with a word and picture.
- Numbers in Tamil: a 1 to 100 chart; tap a number to hear it, or press Count with me.
- Animals name in Tamil: 60 animals, from பசு (pasu, cow) to யானை (yaanai, elephant).
- Fruits name in Tamil: 30 fruits, including the three royal fruits of Tamil homes, mango, jackfruit and banana.
- Vegetables name in Tamil: 30 vegetables you see at the market and in sambar.
- Colours in Tamil: 12 colours, from சிவப்பு (sivappu, red) to வான நீலம் (vaana neelam, sky blue).
- Body parts in Tamil: 30 words, from தலை (thalai, head) to பாதம் (paatham, foot).
Each game has three modes. Listen lets your child tap a picture and hear its Tamil name, then the English. Find it has Golu, our marble friend, ask for a word in Tamil while your child picks the right picture. Memory is a pairs game. The games never say "wrong". A wrong tap hears the name of what was tapped, then the right answer glows. Every finished round drops a marble in the Goli Jar.

Speaking comes before reading. A child who hears Tamil every day will learn letters much faster later, so for the youngest, let the pictures and sounds do the work.
How to teach Tamil to kids at home, step by step
- Pick one Tamil time each day. Bath time, meals or the drive to school. Five to ten minutes is enough.
- Name real things. After tapping வாழைப்பழம் (vaazhaippazham) on screen, hand your child a real banana and say it again.
- Sing. Tamil rhymes for kids, such as நிலா நிலா ஓடி வா (nila nila odi vaa), teach rhythm and new words.
- Tell stories. A short Tamil story for kids at bedtime, even a made-up one about a crow and a sparrow, builds listening.
- Stop while it is fun. End before your child loses interest, and come back tomorrow.
Children love to teach. Ask, "How do you say cat in Tamil?" and let your child answer பூனை (poonai). Being the expert is a big reward.
Tamil for kids growing up outside India
Many families in Toronto, London, Singapore or Dubai tell us the same thing: the children understand Tamil but answer in English. That is normal and it is still a real start. A few ideas that help:
- Keep one parent or grandparent speaking mostly Tamil. Video calls with பாட்டி (paatti, grandmother) count.
- Use Tamil for warm moments: cuddles, food, songs, festivals like Pongal and Tamil New Year (புத்தாண்டு).
- Set the language button to Tamil first, English second, so your child hears Tamil before the easier word.
- Do not correct harshly. Repeat the Tamil word back happily: "Yes, மீன்! A fish!"
Children in bilingual homes are not confused by two languages. They may mix words for a while, and that fades. If you have worries about speech, talk to your paediatrician; there is no need to drop Tamil.
Screen time, gently
Short sessions with a grown-up beside the child work best. Play together, talk about what you see, then put the phone down and find the real thing. For children under two, real objects, books and your voice are better than any screen.

How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: tamil words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
