Start here. These are the animals children see in villages, on farms, in stories and on festival days. At Maattu Pongal, the day after Pongal, families wash and decorate their cows and bulls with painted horns and bells, which is a lovely way to talk about பசு and காளை (kaalai, bull).

Pet animals name in Tamil

Pets are the easiest to practise because they are right there. நாய் (naai, dog) and பூனை (poonai, cat) are usually among a Tamil child's first ten words. Add முயல் (muyal, rabbit), வெள்ளெலி (velleli, hamster) and சுண்டெலி (sundeli, mouse). Notice how many small animals end in எலி (eli, rat): சுண்டெலி, வெள்ளெலி, முள்ளெலி (mulleli, hedgehog, "thorny rat"). Older children enjoy spotting these word families.

Wild animals name in Tamil and English

The forest set includes யானை (yaanai, elephant), சிங்கம் (singam, lion), புலி (puli, tiger), சிறுத்தை (siruthai, leopard), கரடி (karadi, bear), குரங்கு (kurangu, monkey), மான் (maan, deer) and நரி (nari, fox). Tamil builds many names from simple parts, which makes them easy to remember:

The Nilgiris and Mudumalai forests of Tamil Nadu are home to wild elephants, tigers, the Indian bison காட்டெருமை (kaatterumai) and the Nilgiri tahr, the state animal. Faraway animals such as the கங்காரு (kangaroo), கோலா (koala) and ஸ்லாத் (sloth) keep their English-style names in Tamil.

Sea and water animals name in Tamil

Tamil Nadu has a long coastline, and fish and seafood are part of daily life in many homes. Children learn மீன் (meen, fish) early, and many sea names add to it: தங்க மீன் (thanga meen, goldfish), ஜெல்லி மீன் (jelly fish), நட்சத்திர மீன் (natchathira meen, starfish, "star fish"). You will also find நண்டு (nandu, crab), இறால் (iraal, prawn), சுறா (sura, shark), தவளை (thavalai, frog) and கடல் குதிரை (kadal kuthirai, seahorse, "sea horse").

How to teach animal names in Tamil

1. Start with five. Dog, cat, cow, elephant, fish. Learn them well before adding more.
2. Add the sound. Say "நாய் goes bow-wow" and let your child bark. Sounds make words stick.
3. Act it out. Walk like a யானை, hop like a முயல், swim like a மீன்.
4. Look outside. Crows, அணில் (anil, squirrel), cows on the road and street dogs are free lessons.
5. Read and point. Tamil picture books and stories like the thirsty crow use the same words.

Many children abroad know "elephant" before யானை. Do not translate everything. Instead, pick one animal a day and use only the Tamil name for it all day: at the zoo, in books, at bath time. If your child has a speech delay or is autistic, keep the choices small (use the fewer choices setting), repeat the same five animals for longer, and celebrate pointing as much as speaking.

Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
