Numbers in Vietnamese are built from just ten words and a few friendly rules, so children can count all the way to 100 once they know one to ten. Counting one to ten is also a great tone workout: you hear five of the six tones in a single row.
Counting past ten: the pattern
The teens are "ten" plus a number: mười một (11), mười hai (12), mười ba (13). The tens are a number plus mươi: hai mươi (20), ba mươi (30), năm mươi (50). Then add the unit: hai mươi hai (22), ba mươi tám (38). Hundred is trăm, so 100 is một trăm.
Notice the tiny difference between mười (ten, falling tone) and mươi (the tens ending, level tone). Your child will pick it up from the audio.
Three little changes children notice
- 1 becomes mốt after twenty: 21 is hai mươi mốt, 31 is ba mươi mốt. (11 stays mười một.)
- 5 becomes lăm after ten: 15 is mười lăm, 25 is hai mươi lăm. Some people say nhăm in the North.
- 4 can become tư after twenty: 24 is hai mươi bốn or hai mươi tư. Both are correct.
These changes make counting sound smoother. Explain them as "the number changes its hat" and let your child spot them on the chart.
Counting in Vietnamese preschool
In mầm non, maths is taught through play and real objects. Toddlers in nhà trẻ learn "one" and "many". In lớp Mầm (3-4) children count to 3-5, in lớp Chồi (4-5) to 5-8, and in lớp Lá (5-6) to 10, matching numerals to groups and comparing more and fewer. Counting to 100 and adding with numbers come in primary school. So for a preschooler, one to ten with real things is the real goal; the rest of the chart is a bonus for curious children. Vietnamese counting games at home
- Ô ăn quan. This traditional pebble game, drawn on the ground, has children count stones into squares. A chalk grid and pebbles are all you need.
- Chopsticks. Count đũa as you set the table, in pairs for older children.
- Lì xì envelopes. At Tết, count the red envelopes together.
- Songs. "Một con vịt" starts with a number; clap on một, hai, ba as you sing counting songs.
- Stairs and jumps. Count out loud with every step.
Keep "Count with me" short: count to ten, jump, and stop. Five happy minutes build more than a long session.
How to use the number chart

Counting in Vietnamese abroad
Children in English schools often count in English first. Add Vietnamese at the easiest moments: stairs, snacks, toys. Let your child "test" you, and accept mixed counting like "một, hai, three" as a normal bilingual stage.

How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: vietnamese words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
