If you want to learn Malayalam for kids at home, start here. Your child hears Malayalam letters, numbers and everyday words, each with a picture and the English word alongside. The games speak every word aloud, so a three-year-old who cannot read yet can still tap, listen and find. Grown-ups who never learned to read Malayalam can join in too, because every word has an English spelling in the word lists.
Malayalam is the language of Kerala and Lakshadweep, spoken by around 35 million people, with large Malayali communities in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, the UK, the US, Canada and Australia. Speaking comes before reading. A child who hears Malayalam every day picks up letters far faster later, so for the youngest, let pictures and sounds do the work and leave writing for later.
How to teach Malayalam to kids at home
- Pick one Malayalam time a day. Bath time, breakfast or the school run. Five to ten minutes is plenty.
- Name real things. After tapping മാങ്ങ (maanga) on screen, hand your child a real mango and say it again.
- Sing. Malayalam rhymes for kids, the ones grandparents sing at bedtime, carry rhythm and new words together.

Malayalam learning has its own traditions. On Vijayadashami, at the end of Navaratri, many families hold Vidyarambham: a small child sits on an elder's lap and writes ഹരിശ്രീ (harisree) with a finger in a plate of rice, while the elder writes it on the tongue with gold. It marks the start of letters. Onam brings the flower carpet called പൂക്കളം (pookkalam) and the sadya feast on a banana leaf, a wonderful time to name colours, vegetables and fruits. At Vishu, children wake to the കണി (kani), a tray of rice, fruit, gold and yellow konna flowers, and receive കൈനീട്ടം (kaineettam), a small gift of money from elders.
Malayalam for kids in the Gulf, UK and US
Families in Dubai, Doha, London or New Jersey often tell us the same thing: the children understand Malayalam but answer in English. That is normal, and it is a real start. Some ideas that help:
- Let one grown-up speak mostly Malayalam. Video calls with അമ്മൂമ്മ (ammoomma, grandmother) count.
- Keep Malayalam for warm moments: meals, cuddles, songs, Onam and Vishu.
- Look up Malayalam Mission, a Kerala government programme that runs free weekend classes for diaspora children in many countries.
- Repeat an English answer back in Malayalam, happily, without correcting.
Two languages do not confuse children. Mixing words for a while is normal and fades. If you have worries about speech, talk to your paediatrician; there is no need to drop Malayalam.
Is Malayalam hard to learn?
For adults, the script and long words can look daunting. For young children, no language is hard: they learn whatever they hear lovingly and often. Malayalam spelling is also mostly phonetic, so once letters are known, words can be sounded out. How to use this page at home

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: malayalam words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
