Animals name in Vietnamese is a perfect first topic, because con vật are everywhere in Vietnamese songs, stories and daily life. This page has 60 animals with pictures and clear audio: farm animals like con trâu (water buffalo), con bò (cow) and con dê (goat), pets like con mèo (cat) and con thỏ (rabbit), wild animals such as con voi (elephant) and con hổ (tiger), and sea animals from con cá (fish) to cá ngựa (seahorse). Tap a picture to hear each one in Vietnamese and English.

Why so many animals start with "con"

In Vietnamese, con is a classifier, a little word that goes in front of living animals: con mèo (a cat), con chó (a dog), con gà (a chicken). English has something similar in "a head of cattle" or "a piece of fruit", but Vietnamese uses classifiers all the time. When counting, the classifier stays: hai con mèo (two cats), ba con cá (three fish). Say con naturally with every animal and your child will learn the pattern without any explanation. Some names in the game drop it because they are longer, such as sư tử (lion) and hà mã (hippo).

Farm animals and pets

The water buffalo, con trâu, is a symbol of Vietnamese village life and appears in many folk songs and paintings. Other farm animals are con bò (cow), con dê (goat), con cừu (sheep), con ngựa (horse), con lừa (donkey) and con lợn (pig), which southern families call con heo. Pets include con chó, con mèo, con thỏ and cá vàng (goldfish, "golden fish").

Ask your child to guess the animal from the literal meaning. "A mouse with a pocket? Which one?" It turns vocabulary into a riddle.

Animal sounds in Vietnamese

Vietnamese animals make their own sounds: a rooster crows ò ó o, a dog barks gâu gâu, a cat says meo meo, a duck cạc cạc, a chick chíp chíp and a cow ò ò or bò bò. Make a sound and let your child find the animal in the game, then compare with our English animal sounds game.

Animals of the Vietnamese zodiac

At Tết, every year belongs to one of the 12 con giáp (zodiac animals). Vietnam's list is a little different from China's: it has the cat (mèo) instead of the rabbit and the water buffalo (trâu) for the ox. Tell your child which animal their birth year is; children love having "their" animal. Chinese learners can compare with animals in Chinese.

How to teach animal names in Vietnamese

  1. Five animals a day. Use Listen mode and repeat each name with con.
  2. Find it. Golu asks for an animal in Vietnamese; wrong taps get gentle hints.
  3. Sing. "Một con vịt" (One duck) and "Chú voi con ở Bản Đôn" (The baby elephant of Bản Đôn) are much-loved children's songs.
  4. Count animals. "Có mấy con vịt?" (How many ducks?) links animals and numbers in Vietnamese.
  5. Zoo trip. Name each animal at the zoo, the farm or in picture books.

At 2-3, aim for 5-10 animals and lots of sounds. At 3-4, 15-20 and sorting into farm, wild and sea. At 4-6, short sentences like "Con voi rất to" (the elephant is very big). Praise every attempt, and let a shy child point first. English names are on the animals name page.

How to use this page at home

Say it, then find it

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: vietnamese words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.

Ten minutes is enough

Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.

Use both languages

Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
