Vegetables name in Vietnamese gives your child words for the fresh food at the heart of every Vietnamese meal. A family dinner usually has rice, a dish of rau (greens) and a bowl of canh (soup), so vegetable words come up every day. Củ, quả and rau: little words that sort vegetables
Many vegetable names start with a small word that tells you what kind of plant part it is. This is a lovely thing to point out to children, because it turns the names into a sorting game:

Ask your child: "Is a carrot a củ or a quả?" Then pull one out of the fridge and look at it together.
Vegetable names with stories
- Rau chân vịt, spinach, means "duck-foot greens" because of the leaf shape.
- Đậu Hà Lan, peas, means "Dutch beans".
- Súp lơ (cauliflower and broccoli) comes from the French chou-fleur; the South says bông cải.
- Mướp đắng, bitter gourd, is "bitter loofah"; in the South it is khổ qua, often cooked in a soup for Tết.
- Bắp ngô is corn: northerners say ngô, southerners say bắp, and the game uses both words together.
- Rau mùi, coriander, is ngò in the South, the herb on top of your phở.
Vegetables in Vietnamese food
Link each word to a dish your child eats: canh bí đỏ (pumpkin soup), canh cải (greens soup), rau xào (stir-fried vegetables) with carrot and cabbage, khoai lang (sweet potato) boiled as a snack, and dưa chuột (cucumber) sliced beside rice. Water spinach, rau muống, is not in the game but is probably the most common green in Vietnam, so add it at home.
Vegetables without the battle
Many preschoolers refuse new vegetables, and that is normal. Naming a vegetable in a game, then washing, touching and smelling the real one, makes it familiar without pressure. Children often need many friendly meetings with a food before they taste it. Praise curiosity rather than clean plates: "Con giỏi quá, con đã sờ quả cà tím!" (Well done, you touched the eggplant!).
How to teach vegetable names at home
- Kitchen helper. Let your child wash cà chua or snap đậu cô ve while you name them.
- Market walk. Ask "Đây là rau gì?" (What vegetable is this?) at the chợ.
- Colour sort. Red tomato and chilli, green cucumber and spinach, orange carrot and pumpkin.
- Grow something. Plant spring onions or herbs in a pot on the balcony.
- Keep going. Try fruits in Vietnamese or the English vegetables name page.
At 2-3, choose five vegetables your child eats. At 4-6, add new ones and play Find it, where Golu asks for each vegetable in Vietnamese and gives gentle hints after a wrong tap. Five minutes, then off to the real kitchen.
For Vietnamese families abroad
Supermarket vegetables such as cà rốt, khoai tây, bắp cải and cà chua are the same everywhere, so name them in Vietnamese every shopping trip. Vietnamese and Asian grocers stock mướp đắng, rau muống and fresh herbs; let your child choose one and cook it together.
Bé học tên các loại rau củ

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: vietnamese words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
