Fruits name in Vietnamese is a delicious topic, because Vietnam is one of the great fruit countries of the world and every market (chợ) is piled with colour. This page has 30 fruits with pictures and clear audio, from quả xoài (mango), quả chuối (banana) and quả dưa hấu (watermelon) to quả vải (lychee), quả mít (jackfruit) and quả na (custard apple). Quả or trái? Two words for fruit
You will hear each fruit name start with quả, which works like con for animals: a small classifier that means "a fruit of". In northern Vietnam people say quả, and in the South they say trái: quả xoài or trái xoài. The general word for fruit is hoa quả in the North and trái cây in the South. The audio here uses northern words; if your family says trái, simply use both.
A few fruit names also change between regions:

Fruits Vietnamese children love
- Quả vải (lychee), famous from Lục Ngạn in the North, picked in early summer.
- Quả mít (jackfruit), huge and sweet, often eaten in chè desserts.
- Quả ổi (guava), a crunchy snack dipped in salt and chilli by older children.
- Quả đu đủ (papaya) and quả xoài (mango), everyday favourites.
- Quả dừa (coconut), especially loved in the Mekong Delta.
Dragon fruit (thanh long), rambutan (chôm chôm), mangosteen (măng cụt) and durian (sầu riêng) are not in this game, but they are famous Vietnamese fruits worth naming at the market.
Fruit at Tết and Trung Thu
At Tết, families place a mâm ngũ quả, a five-fruit tray, on the ancestral altar. In the South, a common tray includes custard apple, coconut, papaya and mango, because together their names sound like a wish for "enough to spend" (cầu vừa đủ xài). Counting and naming the fruits on the tray is a lovely Tết activity. At Tết Trung Thu, children's tables fill with fruit, mooncakes and lanterns, another chance to name everything together.
How to teach fruit names in Vietnamese
- Snack-time words. "Đây là quả chuối." (This is a banana.) Then eat it together.
- Colour sort. Sort fruit into màu đỏ, màu vàng and màu xanh with our colours in Vietnamese game.
- Taste words. Add ngọt (sweet) and chua (sour): "Quả chanh chua quá!"
- Market hunt. Show three fruit pictures, then find them at the chợ or Asian grocery.

Toddlers learn 5-8 fruits best with the real fruit in hand. By 4-5 most children name 15-20 and sort by colour and taste. Keep sessions short and happy, and praise every try.
How to use the fruit game

Fruit words for families abroad
Outside Vietnam, táo, chuối, nho and cam are sold everywhere, so name them in Vietnamese every time you shop. When you find xoài, vải or mít at a Vietnamese grocer, make it a small event and tell a story about eating it at bà's house.

How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: vietnamese words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
