Environment for kids: be kind to the Earth

Look at each picture and decide: is this good for the Earth or not? Golu shows the kind way to fix the not-good ones.

Good for the Earth, or not?धरती के लिए अच्छा है या नहीं?

For grown-ups बड़ों के लिए

Children care about the Earth as soon as they understand that plants drink, birds get thirsty and rubbish does not disappear by itself. This page teaches the environment for kids through one simple question: "Is this good for the Earth, or not?" Your child sorts 18 picture cards, such as planting a tree, turning off the tap and throwing plastic on the ground. Below, you will find easy ways to save water, love trees, use less plastic and explain the water cycle at a child's level.

What is environment? A definition for kids

The environment is everything around us: the air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil, the trees, the animals and the birds, and the people too. For a three- or four-year-old, say: "The environment is our Earth and everything living on it. When we keep it clean, it keeps us healthy." To save environment simply means to use things carefully, keep places clean and be kind to plants and animals. That is also what "protect the environment" means.

How the game works

Golu shows one picture at a time with a short sentence in Hindi and English. Your child taps a happy choice if it is good for the Earth and the other choice if it is not. Twelve cards show good actions: plant a tree (पेड़ लगाओ), turn off the tap to save water, turn off lights when you leave the room, take a cloth bag to the shop, give old paper and bottles for recycling, keep water and grain for birds, water the plants, put rubbish in the dustbin, walk or cycle for short trips, draw on both sides of the paper, be gentle with animals and let flowers bloom on the plant.

Six cards show things that are not good: leaving the tap open, throwing plastic on the ground, burning rubbish, leaving lights on in an empty room, cutting down trees and plucking flowers. For each one, Golu gives the kind fix, such as "Close the tap tightly" (नल कसकर बंद करो) or "Put it in the dustbin". The game never says "wrong"; it gently shows the better way, and every round ends with a marble in the Goli Jar. The अ+A button in the header picks Hindi first, English first or one language only, and Settings has calm motion, calm sound and captions.

Easy ways to save the environment at home

These steps to save environment are small enough for a four-year-old to do every day, which is exactly why they work.

Save water

India gets most of its rain in a few monsoon months, so saving water matters all year. Show your child how much water fills a bucket from a dripping tap overnight. Then fix the tap together. Reuse water from washing vegetables to water the plants. Children love being the family's "tap checker".

Trees and plants

Trees give shade, fruit, homes for birds and cleaner air. Grow a तुलसी plant or a few moong seeds in a cup and let your child water them daily. Our parts of a plant page shows roots, stem and leaves in a game.

Reducing plastic

Plastic does not rot away. It can stay in the soil and sea for a very long time and can hurt cows, fish and birds that eat it by mistake. Take a cloth bag to the market, say no to straws and reuse glass jars. Let your child hold the cloth bag: it makes them part of the habit.

The water cycle for kids, explained simply

How do you explain the water cycle to a 5 year old? Tell it like a story of one little water drop that goes on a round trip:

  1. Evaporation (वाष्पीकरण): the Sun warms the water in rivers, lakes and the sea. Tiny drops rise into the air as invisible water vapour, like steam from a hot cup of tea.
  2. Condensation (संघनन): high up in the sky it is cool, so the vapour turns back into tiny drops that join together and make clouds.
  3. Precipitation (वर्षा): when the clouds get heavy with drops, the water falls as rain, or as snow on high mountains.
  4. Collection: the rain flows into rivers, lakes and the sea, and soaks into the ground. Then the Sun warms it again, and the trip starts over.

For young kids, the short version is: "Sun heats water, water goes up, clouds form, rain comes down, and it happens again and again." Draw it as a circle with four arrows. A simple water cycle diagram for kids needs only a sun, a sea, a cloud and rain drops.

Water cycle experiment for kids at home: put a little hot water in a steel bowl, cover it with a plate and put ice on the plate. After a few minutes, drops form under the plate and "rain" back down. A grown-up should handle the hot water.

The weather words on our seasons and weather for kids page, like cloud, rain and fog, fit perfectly with this lesson.

Water cycle activities, drawing and worksheet ideas

  • Water cycle drawing: a water cycle picture for class 3 or class 4 has a sun, a sea, clouds, rain and four arrows in a circle. Nursery children can just draw a cloud and rain.
  • Water cycle craft: glue cotton wool for clouds and blue paper strips for rain on a sheet. It makes a lovely water cycle project for school.
  • Water cycle in Hindi: label the diagram with सूरज, भाप, बादल, बारिश for a bilingual water cycle diagram in Hindi and English.
  • Water cycle song: sing to "Row, row, row your boat": "Up, up goes the steam; clouds are in the sky; down, down comes the rain; the river flows on by."
  • Worksheet: draw four empty boxes and let your child draw one step in each, then say the explanation in their own words.

What is the water cycle for kindergarten? Simply "water goes up and comes back down". The fuller explanation with evaporation and condensation is right for class 3 and class 4.

Environment facts for kids

  • One big tree can give shade to a whole house and a home to many birds and insects.
  • Water pollution happens when rubbish and dirty water go into rivers. Keeping plastic out of drains helps rivers stay clean for fish and people.
  • Paper comes from trees, so drawing on both sides of the paper saves trees.
  • The air around the Earth is called the atmosphere. Trees help keep it fresh.
  • Recycling turns old bottles and paper into new things.

These environment facts are a good start for a short speech in English for kids in class 1 or 2: "We must save the environment for future generations. I close the tap. I plant trees. I say no to plastic." Environment activities for kids like these teach far more than a video, and nature walks with pictures you take on your phone become your own environment pictures for the class.

What to teach at each age

  • Age 2-3: copy you: put rubbish in the bin, water a plant, close the tap. Actions come before words.
  • Age 3-4: sort good and not good, as in the game here. Name trees, birds and water.
  • Age 4-5: why we save water and why plastic hurts animals. Start a small plant project.
  • Age 5-6 (UKG, class 1): the four steps of the water cycle, recycling, and a short talk on how to save environment in English.

How to teach environment to kids in 5-10 minutes a day

  1. Tap and light patrol: once a day your child checks every tap and light at home.
  2. Park clean-up: take a bag (and gloves for grown-ups) and pick up a few wrappers. Keep children away from sharp or dirty rubbish.
  3. Bird bowl: fill a shallow bowl with water on the balcony in summer and watch who visits. Our birds name page helps you name them.
  4. Walk or cycle: for short trips, walk together and notice trees. Compare with the cars and bikes on our vehicles name page.
  5. Reuse art: turn old boxes and bottle caps into toys or a planter.

Save environment drawing, poster and project ideas

Schools often ask for an easy save environment drawing for kids, a poster or a chart, especially around World Environment Day on 5 June. Keep it simple and let your child choose one idea:

  • Save earth drawing: a round Earth with a smiling face, holding a small tree.
  • Save water poster: a tap with a big drop and the words "Close the tap" and पानी बचाओ.
  • Save environment chart: two columns, good and not good, with drawings copied from the game.
  • Slogans in English and Hindi: "Plant a tree, breathe free", "Say no to plastic", "जल है तो कल है".
  • Project: grow a seed and draw it every two days for two weeks.

Keep it hopeful, not scary

Young children should feel proud, not worried. Skip frightening stories about pollution and climate. Focus on what they can do today, and praise it: "You closed the tap. You saved water for the birds!" If your child feels upset that others litter, say "We can only choose what we do, and you chose well." Children with speech delay or autism often enjoy doing routines like the tap patrol even before they can explain them; that is real learning. The same ideas connect with our good habits for kids page. If you are worried about development, talk to your paediatrician.

Screen time: play together for about 10 minutes, then go and do one real green task. For children under two, watering a plant with you is better than any screen.
