Colours in Telugu are words your child can use all day: picking a shirt, eating a fruit, drawing a muggu at the door. Notice how many Telugu colours are named after a thing plus రంగు: wheat colour, rose colour, ash colour, orange colour. Show your child the thing next to the colour, a wheat grain or a rose, and the name makes sense forever.
Erupu or erra? The short forms before a noun
Some Telugu colour words have a shorter form when they come before a noun. Your child will hear both at home, so it helps to know them:

You do not need to explain this to a toddler. Just use both forms naturally, and point out తెల్ల ఎలుగుబంటి on animals name in Telugu to your 5-year-old. It is a satisfying "aha" moment.
Colours in Telugu festivals
Colour is everywhere in Telugu celebrations. At Sankranti, families draw big coloured ముగ్గులు (muggulu) in front of the house; name each colour as your child pours it. In Telangana, Bathukamma is a festival of flowers stacked in bright rings of yellow, pink, purple and white; ask your child to name the colours of each ring. Turmeric (పసుపు) and kumkum go together at almost every festival, which makes పసుపు and ఎరుపు the easiest colours to teach. After the rain, look for the ఇంద్రధనుస్సు (indradhanussu), the rainbow.
How to teach colours in Telugu to toddlers
- One colour a week. Start with ఎరుపు. Find red things all week, then add పసుపు.
- Offer two choices. "ఎర్ర బంతి కావాలా, నీలం బంతి కావాలా?" (red ball or blue ball?) is easier than "which colour?"
- Sort toys or clothes into colour piles, naming each pile in Telugu.
- Colour together on the colouring pages, naming each crayon in Telugu.
- Food colours. Yellow అరటి పండు, green బెండకాయ, purple వంకాయ. Find them on fruits in Telugu and vegetables in Telugu.

Colour names are abstract, so many children mix them up until about 3 or 4. If your child always confuses red and green, mention it to your paediatrician; colour blindness is common in boys and easy to check.

Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: telugu words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
