If you want to learn Telugu for kids at home, start with play and sound. This page brings together seven free Telugu games: the అక్షరమాల (aksharamala, alphabet), numbers from ఒకటి to వంద, and picture words for animals, fruits, vegetables, colours and body parts. Every word is spoken aloud in Telugu and English, so a three-year-old who cannot read yet can still tap, listen and find. Grown-ups who speak Telugu but never learned to read it will find an English spelling for every word in the word lists.
Telugu is spoken by more than 80 million people in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and by one of the fastest-growing language communities in the United States, with many more families in the UK, Australia, Singapore and the Gulf. Almost every Telugu word ends in a vowel, which gives the language its musical sound. For a small child, Telugu starts with అమ్మ (amma), నాన్న (naanna), పాలు (paalu, milk) and అన్నం (annam, rice).
What is inside: seven Telugu games for kids
- Telugu alphabet for kids: 16 అచ్చులు (achchulu, vowels) and 36 హల్లులు (hallulu, consonants), each with a picture word.
- Numbers in Telugu: a 1 to 100 chart. Tap to hear ఒకటి, రెండు, మూడు, or press Count with me.
- Animals name in Telugu: 60 animals, from ఆవు (aavu, cow) to ఏనుగు (enugu, elephant).
- Fruits name in Telugu: 30 fruits, including the Banganapalli మామిడి పండు.
- Vegetables name in Telugu: 30 vegetables, from వంకాయ (vankaaya, brinjal) to మునక్కాయ (munakkaaya, drumstick).
- Colours in Telugu: 12 colours, from ఎరుపు (erupu, red) to ఆకాశ నీలం.
- Body parts in Telugu: 30 words, from తల (tala, head) to పాదం (paadam, foot).
Each game has three modes. Listen: tap a picture to hear the Telugu name, then the English. Find it: Golu, our glass marble friend, asks for a word in Telugu and your child taps the picture. Memory: find the pairs. The games never say "wrong". A wrong tap hears the name of what was tapped and the right picture glows. Every finished round drops a marble in the Goli Jar, which your child can tap and count in Telugu.
Where to start: a Telugu plan by age
| Age | Start with | Realistic goal |
|---|---|---|
| 2-3 | Animals, fruits and body parts in Listen mode, on your lap | Understands 10-20 Telugu words, says a few like కుక్క (kukka, dog) |
| 3-4 | Colours; Find it with 2-3 choices; count 1 to 10 | Names everyday things, counts ఒకటి నుండి పది |
| 4-5 (LKG) | Achchulu అ to అః; numbers to 20 | Recognises vowels, matches letters to words |
| 5-6 (UKG, class 1) | Hallulu, then గుణింతాలు (guninthalu); numbers to 100 | Reads two-letter words like ఇల్లు, పడవ |
Speaking comes long before reading. A child who hears Telugu every day will learn letters quickly later, so for the youngest, let the pictures and sounds do the work.
How to teach Telugu to kids at home
- Pick one Telugu time each day. Meals, bath or bedtime. Five to ten minutes is plenty.
- Name real things. After tapping అరటి పండు (arati pandu, banana) on screen, hand over a real one and say it again.
- Sing old rhymes. చందమామ రావే (Chandamama raave) and చిట్టి చిలకమ్మ (Chitti chilakamma) have taught Telugu to generations of children.
- Tell short stories. A two-minute కథ (katha) at bedtime, from Panchatantra or about grandma's village, builds listening.
- Stop while it is fun, and come back tomorrow.
Let your child be the teacher. Ask "How do you say cat in Telugu?" and wait for పిల్లి (pilli). Being the expert is a big reward.
Telugu for kids growing up abroad
Many families in New Jersey, Dallas, London or Sydney tell us the same thing: the children understand Telugu but reply in English. That is normal, and it is still a real start. Ideas that help:
- Keep one grown-up speaking mostly Telugu. Video calls with అమ్మమ్మ, నానమ్మ or తాతయ్య count.
- Use Telugu for warm moments and festivals: ఉగాది పచ్చడి at Ugadi, kites and muggulu at Sankranti, flowers at Bathukamma.
- Set the language button to Telugu first, English second, so your child hears Telugu before the easier word.
- Do not correct harshly. Repeat the Telugu word back happily: "Yes, చేప! A fish!"
Children in bilingual homes are not confused by two or three languages. They may mix words for a while, which fades with time. If you have worries about your child's speech, talk to your paediatrician; there is no need to drop Telugu.
A word on screen time
Short sessions with a grown-up beside the child work best. Play together, talk about what you see, then put the phone away and find the real thing. For children under two, real objects, books and your voice are better than any screen.
How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: telugu words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
