A Telugu pattern kids can spot: pandu and kaaya
Many Telugu fruit names end in పండు (pandu), which means "ripe fruit". Unripe fruits, and many vegetables, end in కాయ (kaaya). Show your child the pairs that live on this site:
| Ripe: ends in pandu | Unripe or cooked: ends in kaaya |
|---|---|
| మామిడి పండు ripe mango (sweet) | మామిడికాయ raw mango (sour, for avakaya pickle) |
| అరటి పండు ripe banana | అరటికాయ raw banana, on the vegetables in Telugu page |
| జామ పండు ripe guava | జామకాయ firm green guava, loved with salt and chilli |
Some fruits keep కాయ even when ripe, because they are eaten sour or firm: నిమ్మకాయ (nimmakaaya, lemon), కొబ్బరికాయ (kobbarikaaya, coconut), ఉసిరికాయ (gooseberry), పుచ్చకాయ (puchchakaaya, watermelon). Once children hear this pattern, new words start to make sense on their own.
Fruits of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
- Mangoes: Banganapalli from Kurnool and many other varieties make summer the mango season. Raw మామిడికాయ goes into avakaya, the famous Andhra pickle, and into Ugadi pachadi.
- Custard apple: సీతాఫలం (seetaaphalam) fills Telangana markets after the rains.
- Bananas and coconuts: the Godavari delta is full of అరటి and కొబ్బరి trees; a banana leaf is also a plate at festivals.
- Jamun: నేరేడు పండు (neredu pandu) turns every child's tongue purple in early summer.
- Gooseberry: in the month of Karthika, many families have picnic meals under an ఉసిరి tree.
Ugadi pachadi: six tastes, six words
At Ugadi, the Telugu New Year, families make ఉగాది పచ్చడి, a chutney with six tastes that stand for the mix of life: sweet jaggery, sour tamarind, bitter neem flowers, spicy chilli or pepper, salty salt and tangy raw mango. It is a wonderful way to teach taste words: తీపి (teepi, sweet), పులుపు (pulupu, sour), చేదు (chedu, bitter), కారం (kaaram, spicy), ఉప్పు (uppu, salty) and వగరు (vagaru, astringent). Let your child taste a tiny bit and name each one.
Fruits by season
- After the rains: సీతాఫలం, జామ పండు, దానిమ్మ (daanimma, pomegranate).
- All year: అరటి పండు, బొప్పాయి (boppaayi, papaya), సపోటా (sapotaa), కొబ్బరికాయ.
Fruits from far away keep names close to English: ఆపిల్, కివీ, స్ట్రాబెర్రీ, బ్లూబెర్రీ. For children abroad these may be the everyday fruits, so start with them if that feels natural.
How to teach fruit names in Telugu at home
- Offer a choice at snack time. "అరటి పండు కావాలా, ఆపిల్ కావాలా?" Your child must say a word to answer.
- Market walk. At the fruit cart, give one job: "Find the దానిమ్మ."
- Colours. Learn colour words on colours in Telugu.
- Count. Count grapes in a bunch with numbers in Telugu.
- Keep it short. One game here, then eat the fruit together.
| Class | Typical list |
|---|---|
| Toddlers (2-3) | 5 fruits: mango, banana, apple, grapes, guava |
| Nursery / LKG | 10 fruits name in Telugu, with colour |
| UKG / class 1 | 20 to 30 fruits, reading short names |
Need a fruits chart in Telugu for school? Print this page from your browser. The word list with pictures prints cleanly with Telugu and English side by side.
For more practice, the fruits name in Hindi and English game uses the same 30 fruits, and odd one out is a good follow-up: which one is not a fruit? Children often accept a new food after meeting it many times, so naming, touching and smelling a fruit is a gentle way to try it. Never force a taste; praise curiosity.
Small Telugu sentences with fruit words
When your child knows a few names, turn them into tiny sentences. They are easy to use at snack time and teach words like "want", "more" and "finished":
- నాకు మామిడి పండు కావాలి. (naaku maamidi pandu kaavaali) I want a mango.
(inkaa draaksha ivvu) Give me more grapes.
(arati pandu aipoyindi) The banana is finished!
For children growing up abroad, short sentences like these matter more than long lists. A child who can ask అమ్మమ్మ for a mango in Telugu on a video call has living, useful Telugu.
How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: telugu words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
