First fruits to learn in Marathi
Begin with five fruits your child eats often. Say the name each time you offer one, and your child will soon ask for it by name:
| English | Marathi | Say it | Talk about |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mango | आंबा | aamba | sweet, yellow inside, summer |
| Banana | केळं | kela | peel it yourself |
| Apple | सफरचंद | safarchand | red, crunchy |
| Grapes | द्राक्षं | draaksha | small, in a bunch, count them |
| Chikoo | चिकू | chikoo | brown outside, soft inside |
The Marathi word for fruit is फळ (phal), and it hides inside सीताफळ (custard apple) रामफळ (its cousin, bullock's heart) and जायफळ (nutmeg). Older children like spotting फळ inside longer words, and it is a good first reading word: just two letters, with Marathi's special ळ.
Famous fruits of Maharashtra
Every region of Maharashtra has a fruit it is proud of, which makes a fun map game for 5- and 6-year-olds:
- Konkan (Ratnagiri, Devgad): हापूस आंबा (Alphonso mango), plus फणस (jackfruit), नारळ (naral, coconut) and kokum.
- Nagpur: संत्रं (santra, orange). Nagpur is often called the Orange City.
- Nashik: द्राक्षं (grapes), grown in large vineyards.
- Jalgaon: केळं (banana).
- Solapur: डाळिंब (daalimb, pomegranate).
- Dahanu and Gholwad: चिकू (sapodilla).
Many Marathi families wait for the first Hapus of the season, and summer lunch often means आमरस (aamras, mango pulp) with puri. Children remember words that come with a story and a taste.
Fruits by season
- Summer (March to June): आंबा, कलिंगड (kalingad, watermelon), खरबूज (kharbooj, muskmelon), फणस, जांभूळ (jaambhool, jamun) at the start of the rains.
- Monsoon and after: सीताफळ, पेरू (peru, guava), डाळिंब.
- Winter: संत्रं, द्राक्षं, आवळा, बोरं (bor, Indian jujube; at Sankranti, children get बोरन्हाण, a shower of bor and sweets).
- All year: केळं, पपई (papai, papaya), लिंबू (limbu, lemon), नारळ.
Imported fruits keep English-style names in Marathi: किवी, ब्लूबेरी, स्ट्रॉबेरी, चेरी. Mahabaleshwar strawberries are the exception, grown right in Maharashtra, which surprises many children.
How to teach fruit names in Marathi at home
- Offer a choice. "केळं हवं की सफरचंद?" (banana or apple?) Your child has to say a word to answer.
- Market trip. At the fruit stall, give one job: "Find the डाळिंब."
- Colours. Yellow केळं, green पेरू, red सफरचंद. Learn the colour words on colours in Marathi.
- Taste words. गोड (god, sweet) and आंबट (aambat, sour). लिंबू आंबट आहे!
- Count. Count grapes or banana slices with numbers in Marathi.
| Class | Typical list |

Small Marathi sentences with fruit words
Once your child knows a few names, turn them into tiny sentences. These are easy to say at snack time and teach useful words like "want", "more" and "finished":
- मला आंबा हवा. (mala aamba hava) I want a mango.
- अजून द्राक्षं दे. (ajoon draaksha de) Give me more grapes.
- केळं संपलं! (kela sampla) The banana is finished!
- पेरू हिरवा आहे. (peru hirva aahe) The guava is green.
For children growing up abroad, these short sentences matter more than long word lists. A child who can say मला केळं हवं to आजी on a video call has real, living Marathi.
More fruit play and a note on picky eaters
After this page, the fruits name in Hindi and English game uses the same 30 fruits, handy for children learning Hindi at school. Then try vegetables name in Marathi and ask "fruit or vegetable?" for each picture. Odd one out is a good follow-up too. Children often accept a new food after meeting it many times, so touching, smelling and naming a fruit in Marathi is a gentle, pressure-free way to try it. Never force a taste; praise curiosity instead.
How to use this page at home
Say it, then find it
Play for a few minutes, then look for the same thing away from the screen: marathi words on the shelf, in the kitchen, on the way to school. A child learns a word properly when they meet it twice, once on the screen and once in their hand.
Ten minutes is enough
Short and happy beats long and tired. Stop while your child still wants more, and come back tomorrow: the same page on five short days teaches far more than one long sitting. Nothing here is scored, so there is no reason to push.
Use both languages
Tap the language button at the top to hear the words in your home language first and the second language after. Hearing the same picture named in two languages is one of the few things research agrees builds attention as well as vocabulary.
